Comments (17)Ann, I'm in South Florida as well, just a bit further up the coast in Fort Pierce. I've been all over the place getting quotes for cabinets, granite/laminate countertops, etc. The best quote I've received for cabinets is at this place: DESIGN KITCHENS 412 Farmers Market Rd. Ft. Pierce, FL 34982 772-464-0500 o My aunt actually recommended them to me. One of my uncles used to work there and said they did quality work, which is a high recommendation if you knew this uncle! The guy I talked to there (Larry?) actually went to the trouble to explain to me all about different box materials AND listened to what I want in my kitchen. He made a couple of really good suggestions, but wasn't offended when I turned one of them down. His quote matched what we discussed exactly. As for countertops, in my area alone I count 8 places of the top of my head who are advertising granite starting at $9.95/sq ft. With installation, all of them are actually running under $40/sq ft. In the Miami/Dade area, you may actually be able to find lower prices because of competition. I've been working on my kitchen for nearly a year because I'm fighting with the insurance company over water damage. In that time, I've also been haunting Craig's List, so I know you could probably find all of the appliances you're looking for on there for a fraction of your budget. For example: I wanted a bottom mount fridge (to replace my white SxS) in bisque because I don't like stainless. I figured I'd have to bite the bullet and pay the $2500 price at an appliance store, but I kept hoping. Three days ago my fridge popped up on CL and I went and bought it for $250! That's a 2250 savings on my budget for a little diligence in checking CL (and about a 30 mile round trip). My new fridge is gorgeous!!! LOL, if you're interested in a 4 year old SxS in white, I'm listing it this afternoon on CL. :) Anyway, the whole point of my ramble is this: the Expo may not be the best source for good prices on quality products for your kitchen remodel. It's simple because all of the vendors are under one roof at one time, but you can do your kitchen less expensively if you have the time and inclination to do the leg work. The Expo is great for seeing what is available out there, for sure. And, a big thank you to whomever posted about the Ikea in Sunrise! I was going to Orlando to check out the Ikea there, but Sunrise may actually be closer for me! :)...See MoreMaster Suite Closer to Done
Comments (26)Thanks, Krayers. We are having a good time working on it. And Steph, I ordered the French doors from Home Depot and they are made by Reliabilt. They come in all widths from 12 x 2 panels up to whatever. Of course you do NOT have to use the track, I hated it because it always hurt my feet. Now, I have a STOP strip of wood across the TOP of the doorway, to make sure they do not swing inward, and that is where DH mounts the magnets. I also got the bifold shutter doors at Lowes, made by Jeldwen (or distributed by them I think). They were in stock on the shelves. And those are either shutters or raised panels. What I wanted was the bifold with frosted glass in the top panels, and shutters in the bottom, but did not find those any more. Hmmm, well, to add a little bit of information: I bought UNFINISHED bifold shutters for our front bedroom closet, replacing sliding mirror doors on tracks (which really hurt the feet), and it was a real pain priming and painting two PAIR of them. So I was really happy when I found that the 2 pair 12" wide panels I bought to make a linen tower for the new bath WERE PREFINISHED. So I know Jeldwen does make a prefinished shutter bifold, if it is not in stock, check online for your store. You can do a search online (Lowes or HD) for BIFOLD FRENCH DOORS or BIFOLD WOOD DOORS. We've ordered single French doors, plus the bifold French doors, for both AL and MA houses. If I'm not mistaken it was Home Depot, but could be Lowes. We had to have them shipped, not found in the store, but believe it or not, no shipping fee if picked up in the store. And they loaded them in our car....See MoreAnyone have exterior French doors with mini-blinds in them?
Comments (5)Timely thread! I just spent the last two months shopping for a replacement patio french door plus a regular door coming into my laundry/mud room entrance. Will share my experiences if it helps. I did not want interior blinds in my french door (which, even though it is on the back of the house, it is my main entrance). Why? I knew I would never close them! We don't need the privacy that much. I did choose interior grids - they may mot look quite as authentic, but they will sure be easier to clean plus no painting. I priced Lowe's "house brands" - Reliabilt and Benchmark (which I think is made by Thermatru), plus Pella and Anderson. I just could not see paying the price for Pella or Anderson. I ended up with ordering Thermatru which, from my research, is a middle of the road (slightly higher end than Reliabilt, but cheaper than Pella and Anderson. I started shopping/researching through a true building supply/door and window shop for Thermatru, but actually ordered from a local small, town building supply store. I am getting it cheaper than the Lowe's house brands. It is going to be around $800. We will install ourselves (not, our handy-man will with the assistance of DH). I am actually replacing an older, 20 year old Thermatru which was metal and metal typically does not hold up that long. It is rusting out at the bottom. On to the mud room. I am replacing a pine wood slab door, which has absolutely no insulating value, but I just wanted a plain-jane fiberglass kitchen type door with the window in the top. I went with a cheaper HD house brand, Masonite, and I did order the blinds in this door. It is not hung yet, but sure looks good. The sales staff in Home Depot and Lowes really vouch for the interior blinds. They all tell me they have very few "failures" and they can be replaced if necessary. When I questioned how well the interior blinds would hold up, one of the sales guys gave this example: "We have a display door set up in the store - every shopper that walks by has to "try them out" so they probably get opened and close approximately 25 times a day and we have not had a failure yet". Makes sense. Just my 2 cents - I highly recommend you look at Thermatru. Tuesday...See Morerjoh878646
