Single sink newbie

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm thinking about a single sink for my main sink. I had figured I'd go for a 60/40 or 70/30 because that's what I've always had and have been pretty happy with them. But reading here on GW has me changing my mind.

I need to keep the sink base size to a 32 1/4" interior or smaller and I want a rear drain. I will also have a prep sink big enough to really prep veggies, drain pasta, etc. (I'm thinking Ticor S805 at 13"x16.5"x 7" interior or Ticor S905 at 16" round x 7.25" deep if I go stainless).

My questions:

- How small a single bowl for my main sink is big enough? The smaller the sink, the more room for more cabinets. Always trade offs... Would the Blanco 26" Super Single be big enough?

We have a blanco super single. Dimensions (interior) are 30-1/2-Inch by 16-1/2-Inch by 9-1/2-Inch. It is plenty big enough for our family of five. We've always had double sinks but we absolutely love the single blanco. Super easy to clean. Big enough to wash everything -- stockpots etc... -- that can't go in the DW. DH especially loves that he can clean our delicate stemware and not worry about accidentally hitting the side of the sink. Works great for prep as well.

Thanks, MCM. I'm realizing there's more than one Blanco Super Single. The one I was talking about is the Stellar Super Single, which is Stainless and has interior dimensions of 26" x 16" x 9". I am wondering if that would be big enough. There are 2 of us, but DH is not good at putting things from the sink into the DW (and I try to resist doing it for him!) so there are usually some dishes sitting there. But only 4.5 inches smaller than what you have - might just do it.

Green Designs came up with a great plan, as usual. It's very similar to my new kitchen. The aisle between my 9' island with prep sink and the rangetop wall is about 42" counter to counter. Its perfect. I've had much larger aisles and hated them. In fact, that's one of the reasons I reno'd my old kitchen. I'm the sole cook in my kitchen 99% of the time, and I would never, ever, ever give up my prep sink. Ever. I love having a large prep zone with a dedicated water source that I don't have to share with the cleanup zone. I'm usually the one who does the dishes too, but when DH occasionally does that when I'm cooking, he can do it out of my way. This kitchen is my first experience with separate prep and cleanup sinks, but it has changed my cooking habits and way of looking at things in the kitchen. You will not use the sink on the perimeter to prep the way you laid out the space. It's not convenient for daily prep. It is a great place for a cleanup sink. Being over on the side like that, your dirty dishes won't show much. Mine don't. Between the giant single basin cleanup sink and the perimeter location, the few dirty dishes waiting on the counter for the DW don't both my OCDness very much. And as you can see, my kitchen is open or at least semi-open to all the other rooms in the house and to the front door. I much prefer an island being all one height rather than bi-level. Your first inspiration pic island is one height. At one level, you can spread out for large baking/cooking projects and for school, sewing or crafting projects. A large kitchen doesn't have to have wasted space. It just needs to be laid out correctly so you have the right amount of space in the right zones. I agree with everything Holly said. I think you could have a great kitchen here!

Double hung means there are upper and lower sash and both can move. Single hung, ditto, except the upper sash is immobile. Two windows side by side is referred to as paired or coupled. The act of pairing (or tripling, etc.) windows by adding a molding (mullion strip) is called mulling; for instance a pair of mulled double hung windows, or a triple mulled casement arrangement, and so on. Mulled windows fit in a single rough opening in the framing. When another stud or studs separates the windows, they are referred to as grouped. Manufacturers will mull windows up to a certain size at the factory, but really large units are assembled on site. I lived with doubles all my life and couldn't imagine having a single bowl sink until I read about them here and it finally dawned on me that I could have the best of ALL worlds with a single bowl sink. I handwash a lot of things. I use a small tub in my sink and throw things into hot sudsy water while I'm cooking. If I need the full sink I merely lift the tub out of the sink (still full of small items and water) and place it on the counter next to my sink. The thing about a single bowl sink is that it can be configured any way you want and the configuration can change multiple times while cooking. The single bowl sink can be configured as a: SINGLE BOWL--this is rare for me because I generally have multiple tasks happening in the sink at once. But when needed I can put sudsy water in the sink for washing large items. The sink is deep enough that there is plenty of room for rinse water to flow into the sudsy water. DOUBLE BOWL--As I mentioned above, I usually use a wash tub (or the largest pot or bowl I'm washing instead of the tub) making the single bowl into a double bowl. The tub can easily be lifted out to leave room for any other tasks I want. Dirty items are confined leaving the rest of the sink "clean." TRIPLE (or more) BOWL--The way I tend to use the sink the most. Sudsy tub of water at one end (or sudsy water in pot or bowl, taking up less room than the tub), colander draining at other end, center drain still clear with plenty of room available for draining water from pots and washing/peeling veggies. Each task takes up only the space needed without a permenant divider determining the amount of space I can use. I prefer to dry dishes in a dishdrainer on the counter (since there is better air flow than a drainer in the sink. For those concerned about germs, air drying is supposedly better than towel drying.) My mother keeps a dishdrainer in one side of her double and the dry dishes are constantly being splashed which seems to defeat the purpose. Plus if there's soapy water on one side and clean dishes on the other, there's no place to drain dirty water from pots. I'm used to a big open sink and I get frustrated by the confines of her sink when I try to wash large pots since I end up banging them into the barrier over and over. The tub I use in the single bowl is quite short which still leaves lots of space above it for manipulating items. I do have a prep sink on the other end of the kitchen from the main sink but since the main sink is in my prep and cooking area, it gets used for all types of cooking tasks. At this point, the only reason a double bowl sink would make sense to me is if there is a faucet at each bowl so that it can be a 2 person sink (taking the place of a second sink) but I still think I'd prefer a single sink with faucets placed at both ends.

Newbie Question: Clumps vs. Single Tuber ?

What is the difference in growth rate and number of blooms between the two ? My Reply - I believe there is a difference in growth - from a clump you can get three, four or even ten shoots coming up from the ground. With that many (lets limit this to 5), every one of them sends out feeder roots - all looking for food in a small area - soon the food supply runs out and the growth rate (which should be continuous) slows down to almost nothing ... you get a lot of blooms on some varieties this way but they are usually smaller and the plant develops way too much foliage. The dahlias I planted this year are all "clumps" purchased at a big box store or from an online retailer (not from a Dahlia farm). I am already thinking about buying from a Dahlia farm for next year since I had limited cultivar choices this year. reply - There are lots of suppliers - check the American Dahlia Society web site for a list of such suppliers. How does one plant a single tuber in a 4 to 6 inch pot ? Is there uneven root growth if I try to center the eye within the pot ? reply - why use pots? why not some sort of container that will fit the tuber, as an example, I save containers that strawberries come in, plus you can purchase fiber pots that are 3 X 6 (roughly) Does a single tuber start slower than a clump since it has less tubers for root growth ? reply -you should know where root growth occurs on a planted tuber. It is not the end of the tuber, it is at the base of the new eye that emerges from a piece of the crown attached to the tuber. If you have a big tuber, the new plant will grow until all food from the tuber is exhausted and then it will start to send out feeder roots - this happens a lot hence plants that take a long time to recover from excessive heat and moisture loss - if you were to dig up the root, there would be no feeder roots - then when they did develop, they could be immature at the time of digging and not have enough strength to make it through winter storage. So next year, cut the tuber to fit your 4" pot, bury it completely and the feeder roots will start faster - enjoy what you have planted this year.

Can't speak for the SS in terms of cleaning etc... (we've had them in the past which is why we went with the silgranit this time -- much easier to keep clean). But I think the smaller size would work for the two of you just fine.

The main advantage of the single sink, in my opinion, is the ability to put items fully into the sink. I love being able to lay a cookie sheet or sheet pan directly down into the sink. I made a last minute switch from a double sink to the single and am very pleased. I also switched to SS, even though I'm not a SS fan. I use a sink grid to protect the sink from scratches. The SS sink is high quality and doesn't have the "tinny" feel that can occur with some brands. I don't think I would be happy if I didn't use the sink grid as the SS does scratch easily. My DH removed the grid to clean some camp gear and created a scratched area. Otherwise the sink looks like new. It is simple to keep clean. Ironically the sink grid is too big to fit in the DW. HA!

Thanks, MCM, for your feedback. I had thought Silgranit, but now am thinking SS. I still have a few days to change my mind again. :)

lucy - which SS sink did you end up with? I sure do plan to use the grid. Funny about the grid not fitting in the DW!

I'm now excited about a single sink - never thought I'd say that!! Now I just need to decide which one. I was leaning heavily towards the Ticor S113, but then noticed it needs a large positive reveal to support the cutting board and the drainer. I guess the Franke Orca's shelf for the extra items is lower in the sink. But I just can't afford the Orca. Now I need to go read threads on sink reveals (unless anyone wants to give me a quick tutorial here. :) ).

We've got the Blanco MODEL 441024 you're speaking of. It's plenty big, deep and sturdy.

We also have the bottom grid.
It helps protect the bottom of the sink and also elevates whatever your cleaning by about an inch which we find helps.
We asked our countertop installers to leave a 1/4" positive reval and we'll have a cutting board made to rest on the sink for prep work.

I have the Franke Orca - I bought both grids; but recently have just been using the bottom grid to protect the sink. The grids are pricey!! I don't think the lip for the second grid is really an advantage - I would have bought the sink without it, and have not found it FUNCTIONALLY useful, handy - yes, functional - not really. Ours is mounted with a flush or even slightly negative reveal - I think it is just a matter of what you personally like. I don't like seeing the edge of the sink. We have a silgranite sink in the pantry - good size, but alas the painters used it to clean something and it now has a white wash stain that I cannot remove. I'm glad it isn't my main sink. I do think the SS looks better than the silgranite - JMHO, although lots of people love their silgranite.

Don't bother with the Ticor S113. They don't make there sinks and are just a reseller. I have listed a link below to the same sink for cheaper. We are MR Direct and have a decent name around as offering a good quality sink for a good price. We also dont overcharge for our accessories

Thanks, all, for your answers. I spent the last 2 days focusing on selecting and tagging my granite!!!! I'll post pics in a new thread. In the meantime....

willtv - thanks. If I can't find the Ticor S113 (or equivalent), I think that will be my choice - it seems to be readily available, so I'm using it as my back up.

lucypwd - I love the idea of the Franke Orca, but not the price tag. :( I actually found it on one website for $575, but then the grids are extra.... it gets even more expensive quickly and I frankely (pun intended) can't afford it. Good to get the feedback that the bottom grid is really the one you most use. And so sorry to hear about your Silgranit/painter episode. I hope they offered you at least some compensation???

mrdirect - thanks for the link to your 346 sink. It does look like (and the dimensions match) the Ticor S113. I had only seen your 345 previously and it wasn't what I wanted. The 346 is, but.... do you have cutting boards and/or drainers to fit? I don't see drainers at all on your website and 346 is not an option when I look at the cutting boards under accessories. Also, a "wire grid" is an option when I look at the sink; can you provide a picture of what that looks like? I am assuming this is the same as a "sink grate" under accessories?

We just had the Ticor 112 installed. The sink is beautiful and solid. Overall I'm extremely impressed. (Sorry I can't say much more than this as we're still waiting for the faucet to be connected!)

Take your biggest roasting pan and the biggest saute pan or frying pan and measure the longest length including the handle of the pan. You should be able to put the entire thing in the sink.

If you cannot set the pan flat on the bottom of the sink, then you can't soak it to clean later.

ZacsDaddy - thanks for the feedback - sounds like you're just finishing up, congrats!

kaismom - great advise. If I do get the S113 (or equivalent), I think anything I own will fit! My biggest roasting pan and skillet with handle are both about 21" so the Blanco 441024 will also work, just not with much room for something else at the same time.
