Wedding Favors

We are creating a little gift bags for the wedding guests and would like some suggestions. So far included in the bags are: scented candle tins, a little small notebook or diary, bubbles, and I was thinking about substituting a small pack of Kleenex tissues (the ones with the pretty pastel flowers on them), if we run out of diaries or notebooks). We also have matches and scrolls on the tables. Is this too much? And if so, what would you exclude?

We had personal Koozies (for holding beer and cans) made up and they will be set out for wedding guest to pick up. IMO, with over 300 guest expected for our wedding, a favor bag is way overboard and expensive. However, we will be making hotel guest bags for those from out-of-town.

Are these favors to be given to each guest at the reception or are these gift bags to be given to out of town guests when they arrive? If they are favors, it seems like a bit much.

I agree now that it is going along. I am thinking about cutting out something but what would you suggest? Should I cut the gift bag idea all the way out and give out the usual weddig favor trinkets? I am just so excited about this wedding that I feel now that I am going a little overboard. Suggestions and comments welcomed.

Thanks for the suggestions folks :) I do plan on printing up a basic set of instructions. And the envelope thing isn't too rough, I can make up around 50 of them in an hour. And since we are hopefully going to keep the guest list to around 25 or so, that isn't too many jars to pack up with seeds. I want to do garden in a jar because I'm asked fairly often what I'm putting in my garden and where do I get my seed from? Thought it would be a nice way to share that with my friends. These seeds aren't going to be thrown around I hope- I hope they take them home and plant them. Most of them either already garden or are looking to get more into gardening, so I thought this would work :) Seed bombs- yep, those are playing into the wedding too. I'm making wildflower seed loaded paper bits for people to throw in the wildflower field where we are planting a tree for the unification part of the ceremony.

Yes I live in TN right along the TN-AL state line. The average temperature in June around here is between 85-95. I have had experience with gardening, but I am definitely not a PRO GARDENER. Everything that I have grown has always been from seeds and I have had pretty good luck with it. You are right that I will be planting TONS of annuals and even some perennials this coming spring to see how they do. I am going to plant the seeds starting at the first freeze and I'm going to plant a batch each week for a month (also I will start some in my cold frame) and I am going to keep up with the Plant Date and the Bloom Date of each batch of flowers. I also know that the conditions for each year will change when the plants bloom so I will be doing the same system for the summer of my wedding, but at least this summer I can get an idea of what may be available at the time of my wedding. Also I do have a back up plan. I also am making candles and cross stitching some items that I will give as favors (if the flowers bloom then they will be in addition to these items, but if not then I will just give the candle and bag as the favors. Also if I don't have any flowers that make it then the centerpieces with be vases with colored stones at the bottom and floating candles. I will splurge and get my bouquet and my bridesmaids at a florist if nothing will bloom. This is just my back up plan because I am sure I will be able to get something to bloom. Someone recently showed me the bookmark she got as a wedding favor. It was beautifully printed, paper, pictures, fonts. I believe it was laminated and had a pretty ribbon attached. On one side it had things about the bridal couple (picture, date of wedding) on the other side was a word; hers said FINANCE and a scripture relating to finance was below it. Each guest was asked to use the bookmark and pray for couple over the years to come. So my friend is praying over their finances, someone else would pray over their health, etc. I'm sure you could use the fruits of the spirit for words - everyone at the table would get a different word! And the couple will be covered with prayer! I was thinking of doing this for my DD's baby shower.

Hi Jo: I used to do that too but then began selling so many I wanted different scents so started scenting them after they had set up and dryed. I make my own scent in a small spray bottle with FO and some alcohol then spray very lightly toss them and spray again let dry and package I use a lot of roses because of the larger petals so use rose fragrance. Right now I am doing autumn leaves and spraying with Huckleberry Wine FO or Pumpkin Spice. I get the leaves in little packages in the Dollar Tree and they are a big hit. Another secret I learned is that I take the flowers apart but leave them as the whole petal dip and then cut apart later. It sure goes faster. Since my jobs go from CEO to pot washer it sure saves me time LOL Doris

I think you've got way too much stuff for the favors. Any one of those would be fine. At a recent wedding the favors were little candy kisses in small fabric bags. I think the favors should be minimal.

My question is this, when did the wedding favor tradition begin? Has this always been done?

socks, I don't think it's a "tradition" at all. I don't see favors at most weddings I attend.

Personally, I am not fond of favors at weddings. They seem more appropriate for children's birthday parties -- certainly a "goodie bag" full of trinkets would seem that way to me. Sometimes I see a table near the exit with candies or cookies for the ride home, sometimes with a tag that says something like "We're so glad you could celebrate with us." I think if I felt I must give something as a favor, I would do that.

jmca, I'm glad you are excited! That is the way it should be. But I think your instinct is correct: more is NOT always better. I'd skip party favors entirely or else keep it very small and simple, not cutesy.

the tissues might be useful AT the wedding--maybe a little basket of them by the door that says "just in case..."

But simpler is probably better.

I hate to rain on your parade, if you're excited. So if you've started, it won't hurt to keep going.

I've become not a fan of those little bottles of bubbles--I can't open them without worrying about spilling them all over me, and the kids have tons of them that I sneak around and throw out when they're not looking.

Instead of favors at a recent wedding I attended, the bride and groom made contributiona to charity in memory of family members that had passed away. Notice of this was place on each table at the reception.
