Trash To Treasure

Attracted to quality, or quantity?

Getting ready to put my old movie posters in my booth. My question is this: would you be more likely to buy a poster if it appealed to you and there was just one or two to choose from, or would you rather have a lot of them to scan through and then make your selection?

What prompts purchases? - the fear of it not being there the next day, or a large assortment of interesting, similar things to choose from?

Do I make sense? Naw....LOL

I think I would more likely buy one if I had lots to choose from. I'd think I could surely find one that appealed to me if there were a bunch. It'd be like "Ooohh, movie posters" then "Which would look better in my den?". If there were just one I don't think I would be interested unless it was somehow perfect for my space, even though I might choose a "less than perfect" one if there were a lot to choose from. No rhyme or reason, that's just what I'd do.

I agree - I like to look through bunches to find just the right one.

From personal experience, and from my classes at the Desert Botanic Gardens ... even when a plant is rated for "full sun" it often needs shade in a Phoenix summer. I plant my chilis and eggplants for morning sun and afternoon shade. They get 4-6 hours of direct sun in the mornings. You are 26ÃÂ°17Ã¢ÂÂ²N and Phoenix is 33ÃÂ°27Ã¢ÂÂ²N (so we're not wildly different in sun angle) Where we differ is in the humidity, with Al Khobar being seacoast and really humid. We are more likely to have frosts and killing low temperatures, your climate just cooks the plants. :) There is probably an atmospheric physics formula that can calculate the difference between light intensity at different latitudes, but I have no idea where to look. A website you might like is desert-tropicals.com because they report on what really grows in Phoenix. If you are gardening, sunset.com might have helpful planting schedules (you are in Zone 13 for their purposes), and the Maricopa County Master Gardeners planting schedules might be useful. http://cals.arizona.edu/maricopa/garden/html/general/hort.htm

Hi KR222, thanks for the correction. Sherry, you are right about Asters and button bush. I just concentrated more on flowers for fall and spring because bees need to stock up before the winter and re-stock in the spring. For example, rosemary, lavender are also good sources for bees. I limited the list to the flowers that produce the most nectar and pollen.

I was reading a book by Larry Hodgson called "Making the Most of Shade." Although I didn't agree with everything in his book, I was intrigued by what he called the "Petunia test." The test involves planting petunias here and there in the shade garden to see whether they'll bloom. He said that if a petunia will bloom even weakly in an area, then that indicates a part-sun situation. He suggested using the test to determine whether some plants might bloom in an area that's thought to be shady. I live in Colorado, where sunlight is more intense than it is in other areas of the country. I thought I would give the petunia test a try next spring to determine just how much sun I get in various areas of my shade garden. You might consider doing the same in your area before investing in more expensive plants that require at least part sun.

We have ordered several handlesets (both interior and exterior) from Emtek -- my husband's best friend is a locksmith and he recommended them highly as having the best quality in their price range. The ones we have outside are holding up nicely. We purchased ours from www.simpsonshardware.com. They are a small family owned business (when you call you talk to the owner or his wife) but their prices at the time met or beat other competitors. Plus they spent a lot of time with me trying to figure out exactly what pieces I needed (including having me send pictures of my existing hinges to make sure I was getting ones that matched the mortises.) I haven't ordered from them in years so I don't know if they are still owned by the same folks but if they are, I would definitely recommend them.

I get too dizzy trying to look at too many. I like having a choice, but more than 5 to chose from becomes overwhelming. I'm such a type A that I just want it OVER WITH and make a choice and move on.

But, in my experience, that's not how most people are...and that's a good thing from a sellers perspective!

Well sometimes people aren't even aware they might have an interest in them until they see something that speaks to them. So to have more variety will hit more masses likes/dislikes...... I'm like Pesky, get it over with but I have friends who drive me crazy with poking through everything just to browse.... They hate to garage sale with me because I quickly scan and buy, while they meander and look at stuff they won't buy ever, BUT have to look, ya know. I usually have an idea what interests me and move on. They always complain I get the good stuff - my comment back is "you snooze - you lose". LOL

More than what you asked but give choices and you hit more senses/likes of the public. Good luck.

I'm more attracted to quality than I am quantity. It's my belief that we have TOO many choices these days, and it causes a lot of confusion on the part of the consumer. IMO, less is more!
