New Stone Done!!

Here's my latest stone. I just finished it yesterday. This is the first item I've used GEII for.

Sorry the background is a little busy, but I didn't have the strength to move it to another location!

So to revisit this topic, I applied Roundup to the grass and left it several weeks to make sure it was all dead, then cut out the shrubs. I had to do a lot of digging to remove all the suckers from the forsythia. I know I'll have to keep killing them both off for a couple of years. In the meantime, I've planted 5 hostas and some alliums and narcissi. I still have a lot of space to fill. I'll probably move out the little lilies and irises that were between the shrubs, and I'd like to put in some big peonies in the centre and have some different hostas and maybe some other stuff around the outsides. I saw some giant leafed hostas I liked the look of. I'm thinking I'll have to mail order. No photo yet, it looks like a freaking mess... :/

HA = that's funny "buildinghome". We had zero problems, not one tiny hitch. Yet the home started off at $240K and we kept adding little things. Ended up at $253K. Little things add up. Double the size of the deck, better appliances, better furnace (make sure you get a good furnace and not cheap builders furnace). Upgrade from a cheap Lennox gas fireplace (a true builders box - run away if you can) to a Mendota. Make sure the water heater is not sitting on the floor (rust). Make sure you have a regular door in the garage so you will not have to open the big door all the time. 12x14 foot deck is too small for real use, we doubled the size and because we face south we used wood and not composite with gets REAL hot in summer. If you can get an extra foot of overhang do it. Good for shade and run off. If you are on a hill make sure the garage is on the downhill side of the house. Make sure you have windows on all four sides. I'm surprised to see so many spec homes with no windows in the sides! Wash tub in the laundry room is a must! Outdoor faucets, put them higher up so you do not have to crawl on the ground to hook up the hose. If you are on a budget, get the expensive lights for the living areas and go cheap in the bathrooms and other areas. Then once you get back on your feet buy the good lights for the bathrooms. Paint everything neutral until you see how the light falls in the house. Don't go fancy YET! We would also build in a heartbeat . . . . . if we had too! I really love Craftsman style homes, although when I designed my house I really didn't apply many craftsman architectural details to my plans. I wish I had....but it's a little too late now. I noticed lot of the older homes that really appealed to me have 36" tall columns (usually brick)with tapered wood columns on top, so I decided that was a detail I could easily add to my own home. Plus...money is a consideration for me and heavy round wood columns would cost a lot. I can build tapered wood columns out of treated 3/4" plywood very inexpensivly. I'll use a treated 4x4 for structural support and then the tapered columns will go over them. This is the look I was going for. I pulled this picture off the internet.

Wow! It's really lovely!

I'd love to see a photo of it on plain grass, tho . . . hard to see with the patterned rug beneath the stone.

Had to come back to this. Being a quilter. I just thought of all the wonderful patterns I have in my quilting books!! I think I am going to have to try just a couple of these stones.I have never tried to do a pattern from a book. But the inspiration sure would be there. Not too many because I do not want to haul them in every winter.

Would you tell me in a nutshell how you do a stepping stone, in particular the design on top? Do you put it in your mold face down then pour over it? How do you keep it from shifting around? Contact paper? I want to do some, never have, and that is how I have thought I would do them. Thanks, and I REALLY do like this!

I only use pre-made stones which you can get at Lowes, etc. This stone is a 18" round. I draw out my pattern on the stone with a sharpie then I glue glass, tile, whatever with GEII (clear silicone for windows and doors).When that is dry, I grout with a sanded grout.
I've never done a stepping stone from a mold.
Don't be intimidated by it. Just dig in and go for it!!

Thanks, Susanna. After I posted my question, I thought, oh, wait, she probably uses a premade stone. Guess that would definitely be simpler to start with! GEII is all I've used, don't know anything else! I will be making stepping stones before too long, I just know it! Thanks again.

LYNDALU said it - loss for words. That's the perfection I could never achieve in a mosaic. I'm a quilter also - rather WAS before I became obsessed w/mosaics - and this is what I strive for in stitching - perfect color combinations, great design and perfectly matched seams. Take a bow.

Bama: That is a WONDERFUL stepping stone--the pattern is so intricate. Bless you for having the patience to complete it! And you did it on the 18 inch stone! HUGE! BEAUTIFUL WORK!!!

Thanks so much yall for the feedback.
I've never been a quilter, but I do love that look. I draw directly onto the stone. I don't do a pattern. I'll start in the center and work my way out. I just let it evolve till I'm happy.Then I start my glass cutting. I generally choose colors as I go. So far I haven't done the same design twice.
I worked on this stone over a 2 week period. My work area is in part of our attic (no air conditioning YET) so some days it was just too dang hot to be up there.

Bama - the design is WONDERFUL!! You are so blessed to be able to just sit down and draw something like that! I love geometric designs ala Frank Lloyd Wright, art deco, etc....keep trying to achieve that sort of symmetry, but I'm still a WIP, I guess!

Can't wait to see it in it's final resting place!!
