I put laminate wood floors in my living, dining, and kitchen. I chose laminate because I have two dogs that love to run laps chasing toys and what not. We are VERY pleased and happy with the flooring and after we did out living room a few months later we opted to look at tile for our kitchen and laundry room and chose to stay with what we had.
We got our floors at a local flooring company it's from the Rhino Tough Series; Botswana Pine with hand carved finish.

Yeah, I'm not really interested in laminate, because the rest of our house is Brazilian Cherry hardwood. Throwing laminate into the mix would just look odd, IMHO.

Here is my "before" kitchen pic. We are keeping the floor. Fits the house. I have the same green tile "rug" in my mudroom at the end of that hallway.

I'm watching this space, too. Kitchen is done but the bathroom will be next. I want something spectacular in there. I'll spend the money, the floor to be WOWed is only 56 feet. The walk in shower takes up quite a bit of space and I don't care what my carpenter does in there ;-)
I've looked at Duraceramic, cork, bamboo, ceramic, that recycled rubbber stuff @ $4.50 a foot, and vinyl.

Right now, I'm thinking a parquet or medallion floor made out of vinyl. The tile nearly froze me the other morning. Quickly stepped off it back onto the vinyl floor. If I don't do the ceramic I will save $700 on the under tile heating stuff. That would give me a REAL nice floor made out of something else. My carpenter can do anything and although I doubt he'll jump up and down with joy when I suggest a fancy vinyl floor, I bet he would come up with something I'd like. The Family Handyman Nov. 2009 cover had a Pergo floor with granite corners and something else in a real light color as banding. I kept that cover open on my desk for months. Who knows? Maybe he'll like it as much as I do!

Have you spent a number of hours standing on a really hard floor--tile or cement? Be sure you do so before you buy one for any work area.

Have retired from years of cement floors at work and am never going to stand for any period of time on a hard floor again unless I really have to. Definitely not in my own home.

Even Marmoleum would be better, and it comes in lots of colors and textures and lasts forever.

Here are my tile floors. I LOVE this tile!!! I first put it in my kitchen, laundry room and half bath on the main floor, then I put it in my master bathroom as well. I even used it in my backsplash. It is a porcelain tile by Monocibec of Italy. It is called Graal, and the color is Aaras.

Here is a picture of our tile floor. The tile is 12 x 12 Italian porcelain/ceramic by Crossville, Strong series, color-beige/desert sand. Grout spacing 1/16"

Well it's not a kitchen, but we have tile in our mudroom, hall and powderroom that's right off the kitchen. I really like the herringbone pattern. You can see in the first shot a bit of how it looks next to the wood floor of the kitchen (the tile is down 2 steps from the wood floor):

Countrygal -- your floor is pretty much exactly what I want to do. Same color, same pattern and everything.

Here is mine, I'm another fan of the herringbone pattern - however this turned out to be a bit much for a DIY project.
