Hmmm.....what to do, what to do....

What should I do with this?? Need ideas, please? I think someone had a candle in it, but that's one huge candle holder for a taper candle. :) I love to sit things out in my garden too, so if it's an idea for the garden, I welcome that too! I bought this last year at a thrift-type store for $10. It's very heavy! Don't know what it was originally. Bottom of a hat stand perhaps?

Looks like it would be a good gazing ball or bowling ball stand.

How wonderful! That has great potential for indoors or out. How deep is the hole? Would it support a tall pole, like for a birdhouse, or flag? I'd love to get my hands on one, to use as a stand for one of these-

Denise, I wouldn't be too quick to remove what looks to be a fairly healthy Don Juan. If I were you I would just spray with the Bayer Disease Control once a week until your problem subsides. I would also cut the shoot that, in the picture, seems to be heading for the big pot. You'd be amazed at how much growth is triggered when you cut a cain that large back. DJ is the oldest rose I have in my garden and it weathers the tropical nightmare of BS relatively easily. I think we both share a challenge in that both our climbers are grown against a wall (in my case) or a fence. Both of these scenarios don't lend themselves to improved air circulation. The undesirability of purple leaved plums is, as with many other plants, dependent on where you are growing them. They are trouble free and healthy ornamentals in some climates. Here they provide some of the earliest spring blossom, long before the cherries and crab apples and then provide blemish free purple foliage throughout the summer. I've just found a seedling on my allotment from the towering specimen in a neighbouring garden. I was interested to find a babe with dark purple foliage as I suspected they would more likely be green. I'm deciding where to transplant it to.

I think most mums that they sell around here are hardy. They have been forced to bloom early to be in the store. When I've planted them, the blooms turn brown and I shear them off. If they are hardy, they will stay green all summer and come back next year and bloom.

If you keep seeds in plastic in the refrigerator, tomato seeds stay viable for several years. Your seeds are not too old unless they've been stored improperly (like in high heat, for instance). I agree with Helen about Jiffy Mix Seed Starting Mix. It's so bad that I refused to try seed starting mix for years. But last year, I bought a better quality and had great results with it. Also agree about the peat pots. I have had lousy results with them. They wick water from the soil and then dry out bone dry in no time at all. It's very difficult to maintain proper moisture around your seedlings in them. Plastic or styrofoam works much better. (I am intrigued with Cow pots, but have no tried them. They are so expensive. Would love to hear someone's experience, though.) I would keep the seed trays in the light from the beginning. Unless a seed says that it specifically needs darkness to germinate (like pansies or vinca), it's best to keep them in light. The instant they germinate they head for the light and if it's not there, they get leggy fast. Yes. The gnats are likely moisture gnats. They are a pain and reproduce incredibly fast. You can get rid of them by putting a layer of sand over the top of the soil in the pots. They are another reason I grow my seedlings in my basement. (They are a nuisance, but they won't hurt your plants.) Just a note, it's generally said here on GW that the lights should be on for 16 hours a day and off for 8. Plants need the rest. (like at night out in nature) It's easy to arrange this with a $5 timer attached to your fixture.

Thanks for the ideas! Gazing ball would be a good height for in my gardens!

I don't have any trees, so the birdhouse idea is great. I just have to get the styrofoam out of the hole because I have no clue how deep it is. I think they sprayed that expandable foam in it. Ugh. I love the SassyTrash site. Thanks!

You could always put a pole in the ground and turn your find upside down on the pole. It looks like it would support 4 hanging plants. You could still put a gazing ball in the center.

A bird house without tree cover is dangerous for the birds - around my place sometimes the trees are not even enough to deter the birds of prey.

I do have cats in the area, so the birdhouse may not be a good idea. Maybe for inside decor. :)

Thanks for the hanging basket idea. I do like that. I need to figure out what type of pole to add to it. It would have to fit down into that hole and be sturdy enough to hold the baskets once in the ground. :) Or perhaps I'll think of something else to hang from it.

It only sits at about 15 inches tall. Haven't measured it, but that's approximately how high it is. A little short for a side table to the couch or coffee table. I like the idea, though, of using it was a table. Maybe like a plant stand. Don't really need one of those, though. Haha. Thanks for the ideas. The more ideas I get, the more I think of other things to do with it! :)

Birdbath is another good idea. Thanks! And I love those hypertufa pots and leaf sculpture birdbaths. Have always wanted to make one. I think so many of us accumulate items that we hope to turn into treasures someday. I just picked up a couple little things tonight at a Goodwill store. One was a metal tray, some wrapping paper with French sayings on it, and a tin container, almost like a place to put mail by a desk.....or who knows what it could be! I thought I could add some embellishments to it, etc., etc.

BTW, I love your creations at the Shabby Garden Creations link.
