recycling at dump

I e-mailed our garbage collection people, seems that in Ohio it is illegal to "shop" at the dump. What a waste! Guess we need to try harder to get it off the curb before it gets to the dump.

I am in Ohio too and I was told the same thing!! Sucks doesn't it!! Unless you know someone who works there..you will have no luck at all getting anything out of the dump. I did get a plant stand that matched one I already have from the recycling center. We went to scrap out iron and metal and he told me to just take it that it was still in excellent condition and that it needed to be used still then just thrown out. So I will paint it to match my other one. Now curb crawling in my area is HUGE. So you have to get out really early in the day or night before trash day to get anything good...or go really early the day of trash pick up to get a thing at all. I have a friend who goes curb crawling alot and gets awesome things and she always thinks of me first and has gotten me some really nice stuff...God bless her!! Hope you do good at curb crawling!!

Good points, greenguy :-) Unless you can get humans to stop generating garbage, you will never be able to do away with landfills completely. Not everything we throw out as waste is recyclable or compostable. And I'd venture to say commercial waste/garbage is a far bigger contributor to the problem than residential garbage production. And I'd avoid making generalizations about dumping of toxic wastes in landfills. I don't doubt that it HAS happened but I'd venture that it is an extremely limited occurrence. The EPA fines for illegal dumping of toxic wastes are enormous and can carry stiff prison terms as well. Rather than a blanket letter writing campaign, we would all be better served if we individually did our part in changing local practices. Focus on local municipalities and encourage recycling practices and organic waste recycling/composting. Make it a community outreach project. I am fortunate to live in an area that places a huge emphasis on recycling of all kinds. Local waste/transfer stations separate all recyclable products - old appliances, TV's and electronics, light bulbs, metal parts, car batteries and motor oil as well as the more common paper, plastic, tin and aluminum, and yard waste. In fact, ALL areas have curbside recycling for the common stuff and if it is not sorted and placed in the proper recycling pick-up container, you can be fined. Just last year, the yard waste recycling was expanded to include ALL domestic organic waste, including kitchen scraps and compostable food containers (like take-out and pizza boxes). This also includes all the organic waste generated by groceries and restaurants - they have the same recycling requirements. These get taken to a huge, state-of-the-art, commercial composting center and get converted to a highly desirable, certified compost product. Of course those who compost at home can still do so, but the alternative is out there for those who do not.

Most people know their backyards better than anyone else, and so they know the weather patterns as well as the patterns of use. In my garden, I had to place the containers up on tables because of a curious puppy that would find and shake-to-death any container that she came across. Later on, the puppy had grown into a sensible and trained dog, but my son had grown into a collegiate and had fellow collegiates with size 13+ shoes visit him--they would walk through the patio or yard to use the downstairs entrance to the house. After dark, nobody could see the flats on the ground and wow! Flats fly far when tripped over by size 13+ collegiate feet. Flats fly in the breeze because they weigh too little. Water equals weight. If you know there are some strong breezes or gusts coming your way then water your flats well. If a severe storm is coming then take the flats to an unheated garage, shed or the trunk of your car. After the storm passes you put the flats back outside where they were. Winter Sowing is highly adaptable, it was written to be that way. People are experts on their own needs and uses of the method, they are experts on their own backyard environment. Keep all that in mind when you plan your own Winter Sowing. What works for someone may not work for someone else because of their personal environment, needs and knowledge. You'll find countless dialogues about containers. Quite honestly, the seeds don't know what they're sown in so choice is not a factor in germination. What matters is good sowing medium--I like fertilizer enhanced potting soil, you need depth--at least three inches otherwise you risk the soil drying out unless you want to water almost daily (ugh), and finally, you need a safe site for the container--someplace animals or humans can't disturb them. Wow, thanks for the help. Bought samples of Balboa Mist and Edgecomb today. In the hallway of my townhouse Balboa turned greenish. So that's out. Edgecomb is much better but seemed to have a slight peachy tone. But the revolting builder beige we inherited with our house when we bought it is a beige-peach-tan and it may be "corrupting" the others. Goes to show what happens in different lights. NO wait, now that is has dried, it is a lovely mushroom. Jewel654 - I'll go off to SW to see Nantucket. BM Glacial - will check it out too. Thanks CRL and beachpea3 - Revere Pewter is pretty but the hall doesn't have a window so I'm trying for a light colour. Yayagal, will find smokey taupe. My first thought was to paint the halls Cloud White in eggshell (the trim though the house is CW). Has anyone see how that works? I love Cloud White - warm and light for places without windows but I know eggshell can look different from semigloss. Most of the rest of the house is painted in a pale celadon green (something like a pale grayed celery). Thanks again guys!!!!

thats good advice daisy. Marc, what you are looking at on that site is essentially what is known as a GOG or glass on glass project and thats another subject you might want to read up on as there are specific concerns about your adhesive choices and grout bleed issues when doing a GOG. As far as glass cutting, a glass cutter/scoring tool and wheeled nippers are most preferred but there are saws and gigs available too

Our town dump has a swap shop. People can leave useful items that they want to get rid of, and any one can come along & pick up whatever they like. often something goes from one vehicle to another in seconds. Small items are left on shelves inside & furniture & larger items outside. Children's toys, bikes, all kinds of stuff. No books because there is a separte building for them. In our area several towns have swap shops at the dump. it cuts down on landfill, and is great recycling. Maybe you could contact your public works dept. or whatever about this idea.

Our dump will not let you take stuff, because the huge machines are turning it under minutes after it comes off your truck. The metal is in another area, and no one is ever around, so you could take something from there, and the garden waist is ground up to mulch and given back out for free, and we have found good bushes and trees and cool pieces of wood or stumps dumped there and taken them.

We have a group of ladies from the Isaac Walton League who started a re-use barn to keep usful objects out of the land fill, they have a huge building, two smaller buildings and a barn of stuff. They have been there 8 years and now people just take stuff to them, like a TS. They open most Sat. until winter sets in. The county lets them do this and the money goes to local causes. I've gotten some good bargins there.
