cardboard barrel

I have a cardboard barrel that I want to convert to a standup table base. Where i am thwarted is-how to I make it stable enough to hold a top, because it is so light weight I am afraid it will topple.

what are you going to do? justcover it with cloth a curtain
or table cloth? or paint it ?
Is it for a lamp, something light weight etc.
if this is the case why not just using something from around the house, yard etc.
by adding weight to bottom third you will make it stable enough for a end table.
weight while I just assume everyone has as much junk as me lol. you may not .
what ever I used I would put it in a lg garbage first then place in bottom.
items for use ... a bag of sand ,a 99cent bag of dirt,
gravel from the driveway, bricks , extra clothes stacked up in it will work but not be that heavy at the bottom ,
books, magazines, cans of paint, jugs of water ,old milk jugs or laundry soap bottles filled with water are heavy then fill with clothes.
Kind of suprised this has not been shown here (old cardboard barrels) this is an old one that is used on stage sets and by room designers for instant decoration.
a friend in k.c who was a seamstress that made custom drapes used these all over her house because where her husband worked(with me) threw out a lot of them .
she used them as tables and bases by grouping 2,3,4 together then tieing them with rope for a base
but she also used them to diplay different fabrics so clients could see them .
I was apainter and painted a lot of them for her and took a bunch home for my bro,s and mine apt.

I am planning on painting it and putting an actual round top on it. I want it to be kindof a moveable table near my dartboard so it will need to hold your drink and dart case, thats all.
Books would be a good idea because I have lots of those- I suppose I could cut some kind of door in the side for access.
We throw tons of these barrels out at work too and it really bugs me because I know they could have other uses.I like the idea of several together as well.
How did you paint yours? Faux? Solid?

Harry, yes I have seen it in my homemade bin and It seems to be more of a stress reaction to an improper balance in the bin. My bokashi is my own saved scraps. After I run this thru my juicer if its on the dry side I add the juice back in so its more of a slurry. Then that mix is saved in a container that will hold 1 to 2 gal. Sometimes I have too much and also use large empty coffee cans with lid. Store this stuff so fruit flies cant get to it . When you do feed it may have a mold covering on top dont worry about that , its fine. Worms will love it. Getting the bedding right in the first place is the key. The relation between bedding, pure food , and worms is important. Bokashi mix is all green/nitrogen with a little shredded paper is most likely not enough. Depending on what you use for your bedding doesnt always have to be the same, whether its peat, coco coir aged compost , shredded paper , cardboard. Im going to say that should be at least 80-85% of your bedding , then add a little bokashi mix in a corner . The bedding should be moist but not wet, then I cover this with several sheets of newprint dampened. Check on the food you added in a day or two and see if worms have moved to the food, if the visible food is gone you can add more in another area of the bin. After adding this food slurry , checking the next day sometimes I will see the bacteria in the food a it seems to moving. This means it is ready for the worms. The bacteria has to be breaking it down before they eat it and that is why it is better , that is, if you want it quicker . This doesnt have to be done this way , some people just chop it up and put it in in this way , just takes longer, hope my rambling has helped.

First of all I am so sorry I missed your pictures to comment on Loretta. What a lovely home you have!! I am all with you the change in paint color in your bedroom is amazing. Loved it before and now it is oh so dreamy!! Something to keep in mind as I choose colors for our house. As promised this is a day light picture of the kitchen. It is not as good as I had hoped but it is snowing as promised so no sun to get a good picture. Still we are happy with the color. I think I will stay with the color we have in the living room and hall which is called whisper white. It is not a bright white because bright white stands out against it. We both like it as it is but the paint needs to be semi gloss or better paint then came on the house as it can not be washed. Chris

The table near the chair will be used for a drink and as an accent for that space. mareda, small skirted tables are a great idea, but I don't think I would like that look in this room. Below is a photo of the whole room (as it was a couple of weeks ago - but chair is moved back to the left side of window rather than the right). The room is more contemporary with only this side chair as an accent. I feel skirted tables fit better in more traditional rooms, although the ability to add some different colored fabric and softness is beneficial in lots of circumstances and as patricia43 said - you can hide lots of stuff. les917, thank you so much for the link, you always have such good ones. I do like the shape of the mango table, but am now thinking something with a bit of color - rather than more brown in the room - I feel the wood would be lost on the slate floor. The mango table has a similar sheen to the one I was mentioning I saw at World Market the other day. It was a barrel shape but is made out of wood, was smooth, and opened up with a small lid on top but is flat so a drink could be placed. Last night I had a vision (I see I am becoming obsessed with decorating when I have visions at night - uh oh - the bug has bitten) about getting a inexpensive pottery vase and covering it with mosaic glass - I was thinking of the amber glass that came out of my front window - see photo below - I had told a stained glass artist she could have it - but another no show for a free item. Perhaps make the whole thing with amber glass but add in an occasional blue tile or contrasting piece of glass. Maybe cut the glass in long strips so it doesn't look so busy - I am thinking out loud here. Below is a drawing I drew quickly to explain what I am thinking of. Can you picture the long strips in the gold and the little black squares in an irridescent blue glass - what do you think? (I know a lot of work). I am going to a studio today to sign up for a glass jewel box class and I will ask them if this is feasible. I just have to find a form to adhere the glass to. Plywood would do and I could make a wooden top so stuff could be stored in it. I could build it an octagon shape so it wouldn't be square. I would change the top so I could put a top on it or a small platter as les suggested earlier. Now I just need about 40 hours in each day to do this. I'm surprised that if she wasn't using the waste, she didn't just toss it in the trash or garbage disposal (since some people don't compost or even think about all the good things they are tossing away). But good thing for you. It sounds like you already have a worm or regular compost bin/pile. I would say add what you can to those two piles, and then put in your browns to the 55-gallon. I think that barrel is more valuable as a container without holes, so don't add water (it probably has sufficient moisture anyway), but take from it every few days until it is gone. It's not to say you would normally compost like that, in a container without drainage, but this is just temporary to try to catch up to the 55-gallons full of fruit waste without necessarily destroying the barrel.

I just acquired several of these cardboard barrels and am looking for ideas to use them for. I thought about toy boxes, and stools (for light people). I like the idea of a table. Painting? I thought of that, but wondered if the paint would soften the cardboard. I am considering covering the outside with fabric. Any input on this?

I make tables for in and outdoors...if wind is an issue outside, put several bricks in the bottom of barrel to keep it in one spot :0) I also make "plant stands" from chairs no longer safe to set on (wobble)..

These would look cute painted different colors and stacked sideways in a child's room to hold toys, shoes, etc.

We use them as bedside tables. The tableclothes for those little tables fit perfectly and hang to the floor just right! My hubby uses a jigsaw to cut a circle out of wood--he cuts it about 1-2 inches bigger than just lay it on the top, put on the tablecloth, and you are good to go!! We store magazines, stuffed animals, out of season clothes, etc in them! No one knows the difference!! Great storage and way to hide things!Oh--and you can always add the piece of glass that you can buy at walmart, etc to the top!
NEVER had any problem with them tipping over!!

I have Mom's old cardboard and wooden barrel. I have summer/winter clothes in one and not current tablecloths etc in the other . Each has a wooden round on top and a long round skirt. They are used as corner lamp tables.
