cardboard barrel

I have a cardboard barrel that I want to convert to a standup table base. Where i am thwarted is-how to I make it stable enough to hold a top, because it is so light weight I am afraid it will topple.

what are you going to do? justcover it with cloth a curtain
or table cloth? or paint it ?
Is it for a lamp, something light weight etc.
if this is the case why not just using something from around the house, yard etc.
by adding weight to bottom third you will make it stable enough for a end table.
weight while I just assume everyone has as much junk as me lol. you may not .
what ever I used I would put it in a lg garbage first then place in bottom.
items for use ... a bag of sand ,a 99cent bag of dirt,
gravel from the driveway, bricks , extra clothes stacked up in it will work but not be that heavy at the bottom ,
books, magazines, cans of paint, jugs of water ,old milk jugs or laundry soap bottles filled with water are heavy then fill with clothes.
Kind of suprised this has not been shown here (old cardboard barrels) this is an old one that is used on stage sets and by room designers for instant decoration.
a friend in k.c who was a seamstress that made custom drapes used these all over her house because where her husband worked(with me) threw out a lot of them .
she used them as tables and bases by grouping 2,3,4 together then tieing them with rope for a base
but she also used them to diplay different fabrics so clients could see them .
I was apainter and painted a lot of them for her and took a bunch home for my bro,s and mine apt.

I am planning on painting it and putting an actual round top on it. I want it to be kindof a moveable table near my dartboard so it will need to hold your drink and dart case, thats all.
Books would be a good idea because I have lots of those- I suppose I could cut some kind of door in the side for access.
We throw tons of these barrels out at work too and it really bugs me because I know they could have other uses.I like the idea of several together as well.
How did you paint yours? Faux? Solid?

As someone raised in organic gardening who has used cardboard gardening for specific areas and types of gardens, I hoped to add some beneficial information to the cardboard gardening discussion. Many replies admitted to limited experience w/cardboard gardening & implied that it was a new concept since it was new in their experience. Masanobu Fukuoka, microbiologist from Japan, questioned modern mono-agricultural methods early in life. His work dates to 1938 & still is groundbreaking today, pun intended! though he is known for no-till gardening. Search for his name and learn the science behind not only cardboard gardening but many other useful techniques to improve the most important aspect of growing.... soil biology. Personally, I have found cardboard/newspaper gardening perfect for changing one's weeds into compost. Some who replied to the previous post described some curious layers and methods to their cardboard process. My method came from the Australian Permaculture texts I studied in 1980s. I lay cardboard on the patch, making certain to overlap the edges so weeds cannot find their way through. Note: all areas must be thoroughly covered. Then I thoroughly soak the cardboard. To the gal who saw her newspaper flying down the street....did you wet it immediately upon application? Next, I cover the cardboard, again thoroughly, with a cured manure. I find my manure from local ranchers or farmers who can verify it is old already. Finally, the icing is straw.... I love tight packed oat straw. My local feed store has bales for $5 each... they weigh 60-80 pounds. I pull the leaves/pages of the bale and gently loosen them over the patch. I cover... you guessed it! thoroughly. If I see grass or weeds coming up through it in a week or two... I do this all over again! right on top of it... a layer cake. The beauty of cardboard gardens in my experience is the soil stays so moist and becomes so rich because the cardboard is holding in moisture and the worms love the bottom side of my cardboard. I find cardboard gardening a fast easy way to quickly change dirt into soil. No pitchforks, no tills, shovels only for throwing manure. And healthy soil has always been my magic ingredient for lush plant growth. I hope this helps clarify some of the many issues listed in replies. RpR, I doubt I would have much success starting a community urination program, since we don't even recycle here. But it does make me wonder if there would be any other alternative amendment that may accelerate the decomposition process. I've been piling some in raised beds and other places as a lasagna garden type of thing, but I do not have enough other materials to top them with. The unsightliness of just laying them on the ground proves not an option on my property. I'd love to get some worms chompping on the stuff; but with this bulk, I doubt I would make much of a dent. If I created a 10'X10' pen and just layered the boxes in that, how long would it take to decompose? Would that attract roaches? I said I collect 3' of cardboard a week, but that is not every single week. Some weeks we get much less than that, but it is a lot and I hate to just keep burning it all. Hey All, here's an update on the project. I found an old wine barrel that had been living under a deck and so had lost resale potential. We carefully halved it with a circular saw by holding the saw relatively still and rolling the barrel over the wheels on the bottom of a cart. This was around Apr 2014. The staves stayed relatively tight for 6 months, but have since loosened a bit. I lined the insides of the bins with newspaper, partly to maintain moisture in the bin and partly to keep The Wormies inside. I also keep a few layers of newspaper and cardboard on top of the castings and water the paper itself once a week or so. If we go on a longer vacation, I have a worm sitter come over to wet them. I put each half on bricks in a thick box or boot tray, but haven't experienced any leaking. Besides getting the hang of moisture maintenance, the only quirk in the system is that moths got in one bin for a short time. Turns out they just made it through the lid (wood propped on top, but not totally sealed) and not through the cardboard and paper into the worms' sanctuary, so it resolved quickly by me taking the lid off and removing the moths before they got too comfortable. I'm surprised that if she wasn't using the waste, she didn't just toss it in the trash or garbage disposal (since some people don't compost or even think about all the good things they are tossing away). But good thing for you. It sounds like you already have a worm or regular compost bin/pile. I would say add what you can to those two piles, and then put in your browns to the 55-gallon. I think that barrel is more valuable as a container without holes, so don't add water (it probably has sufficient moisture anyway), but take from it every few days until it is gone. It's not to say you would normally compost like that, in a container without drainage, but this is just temporary to try to catch up to the 55-gallons full of fruit waste without necessarily destroying the barrel.

I just acquired several of these cardboard barrels and am looking for ideas to use them for. I thought about toy boxes, and stools (for light people). I like the idea of a table. Painting? I thought of that, but wondered if the paint would soften the cardboard. I am considering covering the outside with fabric. Any input on this?

I make tables for in and outdoors...if wind is an issue outside, put several bricks in the bottom of barrel to keep it in one spot :0) I also make "plant stands" from chairs no longer safe to set on (wobble)..

These would look cute painted different colors and stacked sideways in a child's room to hold toys, shoes, etc.

We use them as bedside tables. The tableclothes for those little tables fit perfectly and hang to the floor just right! My hubby uses a jigsaw to cut a circle out of wood--he cuts it about 1-2 inches bigger than just lay it on the top, put on the tablecloth, and you are good to go!! We store magazines, stuffed animals, out of season clothes, etc in them! No one knows the difference!! Great storage and way to hide things!Oh--and you can always add the piece of glass that you can buy at walmart, etc to the top!
NEVER had any problem with them tipping over!!

I have Mom's old cardboard and wooden barrel. I have summer/winter clothes in one and not current tablecloths etc in the other . Each has a wooden round on top and a long round skirt. They are used as corner lamp tables.
