Pottery Barn rug help

After 25 years, I am completely changing the color and furniture in my living room. Time for a definite update. The wallpaper is coming down, and we are painting the ceiling and trim white, but the wall color is yet to be determined. The sagey green carpet is staying (for now) but I am getting a new couch and 2 matching chairs. I am a bit overwhelmed as to where to begin choosing colors. I have decided that the way to go is to pick a Pottery Barn rug that I like, and from there can then make an intelligent choice about fabrics. The wood furniture pieces are either dark espresso or toffee. The only other concern is the kitchen right off the LR is RH Silver Sage, so the new color will need to flow well into it.

I have been looking online at the PB rugs, and see a lot I like. I especially like the colors in Malika. It appears to be mix of light blues, sage green, gold, olive, and rust. But, computer monitors are not reliable, so I am not sure what to do. Should I order samples at $25 a pop of my top 5 favs and see how they look? Decide on the top two, then go to the paint store and ask the consultant's advice?

I am wondering if any one has RH silver sage in a room, and also a PB rug? How did you decide on picking a couch to go with your rug? Were you happy with it a year later?

Any suggestions as to a better way of deciding on color for my room? The wall paper is still up so I can't just go out and buy samples and make sample boards. BUT, we don't want to call the painter until I have decided on a color (DH's way of seeing it). I need to make a decision some how, so I guess the rug will have to be the inspiration. HELP!

Are you far from a Pottery Barn store? They have the rugs hanging in the store and from my experience, in stock.

I bought a handtufted one about 4 years ago for my family room and it shed like crazy - tumbleweeds!- for a couple of years with definite worn spots from the shedding.

I agree with rucmom. Definitely stay away from handtufted rugs. Even if they don't shed, their lifespan is much shorter than handknotted, or even machine-made like Karastan. In fact, Karastan would be my choice for someone who expects their things to last a long time. (25 years!) They cost more, but even PB rugs aren't cheap.

Here's one similar to the PB one, and not much more money.

Is this the one? Don't have it but do have a moss and sage Pottery Barn wool rug that has worn like iron for the 8 years or so we have had it! I have no idea if its or not, but I do have one pb rug that is under our bed and we walk on daily where it sticks out at the end of the bed with several trips a day and it still looks the same as when I got it 4 years ago.

If you see a backing on the rug (as opposed to seeing the weave and pattern on the underside) then it has adhesive. The back of the rug is coated with adhesive and the backing is glued to it. That is what you smell. The latex adhesive deteriorates over time (avoid sunlight, this makes it worse). I read one comment about using an iron for creases - if the rug has an adhesive this will melt the adhesive and cause staining and smells. The first 3 days are worst for new rigs with an adhesive, but VOCs can off-gas for years. Recently, PB has started using a manufacturer that uses "synthetic latex" adhesive to combat this deterioration, and latex allergies. They claim it doesn't break down but I don't have long-term experience to know how it performs. It theoretically should have low VOCs and minimize smell issues. I'm curious if anyone has experience with their rigs made of recycled water bottles. They are more affordable and are surprisingly soft.

Dee, that is a very good point to consider about the shedding. I have a Karastan multi kirmin and am looking to completely change the color scheme so I can't use it. This rug has never shed--I guess that bumps up my expectation of quality. I use Home Depot polypropelene Oriental knockoffs under my dining table in the kitchen, and toss them every 5 years as they get very heavy traffic from kids/dog/ dirty feet coming in from outdoors. They look and feel just ok, but never shed at all and clean up pretty well so I don't have to freak out when someone spills BBQ sauce on it.

The LR rug will have to last over the long hall. Maybe I will look at the Karastans at Macys locally to get some ideas on true color. I am hesitant to buy any rug online unless I see the exact one in the flesh first.

Any one else out there care to comment on the quality of their Pottery Barn rug? Do they all shed like this, because they are hand tufted? They are half the price of Karastan. Requires some contemplation here.....

I have a PB "Bronwyn" rug in our family room that we bought in 2003 on ebay after PB sold out of it. It was new in the plastic when it arrived.
At 8 years in a higher traffic room with a child and a dog we are very happy with the way it has worn. I'm sure that their rugs come from different vendors but our experience has been good.

You might find this video interesting. I think the key is to buy a hand-knotted rug rather than one that has been hand-tufted, as Dee said. It appears that Pottery Barn offers both types. Unfortunately, Malika is hand-tufted.
