Tulum, Mexico - opinions

Hi all!

I read about Tulum. Mexico in my Budget Living magazine, the place seems really rustic and beautiful. There are no big resorts there, and from what I read on other websites getting to the hotels from the airport is not straight forward. However, there is a lot to do (or so the brochure says!) and looks breath taking.

Has anyone bin there, or knows about it? Also, any hotel or destination recommendations in Mexico are welcome!

If you're looking for a nice place to stay (all-inclusive), you have several nearby Tulum. Bahia Principe has two "sides"; Akumal and Tulum. I haven't stayed there but I hear it's very nice. There are two other all-inclusives (Akumal Beach Resort and Oasis Akumal) but they are not rated as high. I've found most US travelers are looking for more luxurious settings; you won't find that at these other two. Personally, I like Oasis Akumal because it's not such a big place.

There are tons of condos in that general area. I recommend checking out www.bill-in-tulsa.com for more information on the condos and some pictures of the area.

I was just going to post a message asking the same question, because I just booked a cruise for January 2004 that includes a stop at Playa del Carmen. I have been to Chichen Itza and Cancun, but not to Playa del Carmen or Cozumel, the other Mexican port of call scheduled.

My specific question is this: has anyone out there been to both Chichen Itza and Tulum? I'd like an honest comparison of the two, so I can decide if its worth visiting, seeing how I've already seen Chichen Itza (which is amazing!!)

Also, can anyone make any "must see" recommendations for both Cozumel and Playa del Carmen?

I'm glad you are enjoying this. I sure appreciate the help. I believe CalSherry and MissSherry are correct about the orange longwing being Dione juno. I also think what I took to be a tail on the small yellow and black butterfly was actually part of a leaf. I thought I remembered seeing tails on the actual butterfly, but it's been six weeks since I saw one up close, so I don't trust my memory any more than my vision. I found a picture that looks very much like it -- without tails -- on mariposasmexicanas.com (thanks CalSherry for this site, which I immediately bookmarked): Catasticta nimbice nimbice, Mexican Dartwhite. The little checker could be Anthanassa ardys, but I'll have to get a better picture to be sure. Any guesses about the platinum colored one or the longtail skipper? geni

Torreya There's natural hybridization and artificial hybridization... Surely, there are natural hybridization between montezuma and bald cypress in Texas but there aren't really any information on that subject. At this point, I don't know how to tell whether they are hybrids or not. There are many variabilities apparently from what I've read. Some don't have knees. Some have smaller cones. Some retains their foliage round year (Montezuma is evergreen in zone 9 and warmer). Montezuma has darker green leaves compared to bald cypress that I've seen up close. There happens to be possible montezuma cypress in another subdivision a mile away. it is very rare that they are sold so I wonder how they ended up with that tree but I like it better than bald cypress which doesn't look all that great growing in area with caliche/limestone base soil. China has done major stuff with montezuma, bald cypress and pond cypress breeding program for quite a while, probably 20 years or longer, i forget the exact numbers but it's a big thing going on over there. They are literally growing millions and millions of cypress seedlings to plant across south area of China. Those trees are not native to their land. They were brought over there from USA in 1800s if I recall correctly. One hybrid that they came up is between Montezuma and bald cypress called 'Nanjing Beauty' that I have 4 at my house. A professor at my college went to China in the early 2000 to provide some help regarding taxiodium trees and he brought some 'Nanjing Beauty' back from here and I guess he started propagating them since then for evaluation program at 50 different locations across USA. China has since come up with more hybrids. They tend to classify their hybrids such as T-101, T-20, etc like that and do some testing on how they do over certain period of time. It's pretty interesting what they are doing over there. It might be a while before you see 'Nanjing Beauty' being sold anywhere if it gets that far. It is relatively new brought into USA in the early 2000s.

Tulum is beautiful--we were there last summer during our cruise. There is a gorgeous beach right there at the Tulum ruins, and there are some beautiful plants growing all around the area, but nothing like a structured garden. We didn't explore any nearby places, so who knows what you'll find? Ask your tour guide or someone working there, and they could probably tell you. I haven't been to Chichen Itza but have been to Tulum. Tulum is much smaller than Chichen Itza; it will only take you a couple of hours tops to see all the ruins in Tulum. There are several other places to view ruins but I'm not familiar with all of them.

Playa del Carmen is a cute little area - very Americanized. Cozumel is becoming more Americanized.

Again, lots of information on Bill in Tulsa's website but his board focuses on the lesser known, not as developed/traveled places.

Thanks! I will check that link out- I have heard that Tulum is more "romantic" because of its ocean side setting than Chichen Itza, so I think I am going to include it on our itinerary.
