Can anyone help me get this crackle look on cd's?

I did this ! Place the CD in a bowl of water - ( it usually floats ) and stick it in the microwave on high . You'll see lightning ! The beams just etch the top - it's really cool to watch . Take it out when you're satisfied with the amount of crackle.

This has been driving me crazy!
At a fair I went to they had them on hangers made of copper wire & embellished with some old costume jewelery
very pretty sun catchers & I'd like to do some more for the windows to keep the birds from flying into them. Jill

You could of course create a data page with all that information on and include it on the CD. A few years ago (Win 3.1 days) I created such a CD and distributed to family members. I made folders with each family group and included a data sheet in each folder. As these are older photos I assume you will be scanning them? Practice a bit before going ahead full steam and be sure to create an image at least one megabyte in size or larger in case anyone may want to print any in the future.

I just bought some Levitron light almond outlets and light switches with screw less covers. I am very happy with how streamlined and modern they look. At first glance I thought they were white. My electrician told me about them, and said most people use them nowadays for off-white or cream subway backslashes. Hopefully this will help others in their decision. I also looked into the custom, online store , Columbia Jorge stoneworks since a few gw'ers used them. I was worried how the edges of the covers would looked chipped, since I have the crackle finish. They match the mondorla tiles soooo much better than the bright white. I did not know there was a new color, light almond vs the regular almond! I hope this helps others stuck on which covers to get.

cd fridge--how much are they supposed to stick out?

The vast majority of CD refrigerators are refrigerators with carcasses/boxes approx 24" deep. The doors must stick out past the adjacent walls/doors/cabinets/counters to open fully. What most of us have done to make a CD refrigerator look more built-in is to surround it by 3/4" finished (plain) end panels with a full-depth (24") cabinet mounted above the refrigerator & b/w the end panels. There's not much you can do about the doors sticking out past the counters if you want to be able to open them fully! Oh, and if your refrigerator is against a wall, be sure the wall is either no deeper than the refrigerator carcass OR you have a 9" to 12" wide cabinet or cab + counter between the refrigerator and wall.

Thank you all for your feedback. I've been busy with out of town visitors and haven't had a chance to respond. It looks like the majority of you voted for crackle tiles! So, crackled it is! Igloo, your tiles are to die for. They kinda remind me caramel...yummy! I will make sure to have the tiles sealed before and after grouting. Thanks for the advice. Sue - the tile choices are crackle tiles by Sonoma Tile Makers and non-crackle tiles by Waterworks. Can't remember the name of the colors off hand, but they looked really similar. lesmis - I will pick the crackle tiles so that you can vicariously live through me! Plus, the crackle tiles are cheaper, so it's a win-win situation! pluckymama - I tried to take pix, but it was really hard to get the texture of the tiles to show. What a disappointment! Thank you so much to the rest of you for your feedback! You're all wonderful!

Easy, when you make some of those would you please post a picture? They sound like they would be so beautiful and would make economical but nice gifts.

I cracked my 1st one today, worked great!

how long did you put the cd in there for?
this is a very cool idea and i would like to make one

I have a really powerful Microwave so I turned it down to 70% , then I put it in a plate of water & watched. I think it took about 30 seconds, I didn't get any fire works :(
So of course I had to see what happened when I did more & it crackeled more but never sparked.
I'd like to try some of those colored cd's & see what happens.
I need to get some copper wire next, I thought it was too expensive at Michaels so I need to hit the hardware store.
I hope this helps my little birdies, at a certain time of day they get dangerously close to the windows.
