Making pens from hollow handle knife silverware

Can anyone tell me how to make ink pens from hollow handle flatware knives. I've seen some online for sale but would like to give it a try myself.

Kudzu- Cherry does them. Hopefully she will come on & tell you. Her leg is giving her problems so she hasn't been on much. You could go to post further down where she made Sunflowers & see if it is on her site. She made lapel flower holders with them too. She is very talented & often uses silverware in her crafts. Could put in her site name "Kudzu" & see if you can find them that way. Jan

hi there! I've been out of the loop for the most part, but I do come back and try to post now and then :D Mostly I craft in my bedroom and make a lot of things,but I haven't been photographing them all, or getting the "how-to" photos like I should.
I LOVE the pen made from the hollow silver handle, and this is how I do mine....you can search for more detailed and better how-to's,lol!
I have a small pair of bolt cutters, and I recommend these for all of ya'll...you'd be amazed how often you'll use them! About $5 at Harbor Freight.
Cut the knife handle off with the bolt cutters, being careful with the design in the handle, keeping the pretty design on the part you use. You might hit the stainless steel part of the knife blade, if you do, use pliers to pull them out, then you can re-cut the handle with the bolt cutters if you need to, to neaten them up. ( in fact, check first to see if the blade will come out with the pliers before you cut)
After I cut them, I used my pliers closed, to slip inside the handle and round it out, keep checking here, to make sure you don't make it too big. I use Bic Stik type disposable ink pens....they're round.
I use a coarse emery board to file the edges smooth, you don't want any bits of metal to snag and cut your hand!
Polish it if you like...and you're done!
When making a small flower vase....I drill a hole near the top on one side, and slip it on a clear suction cup to hang in a window or on a mirror, or glue on a pin for wearing a fresh flower on your lapel!

My aunt lived to be 109 & a few yrs before she died I asked her for 1 of her spoons, if she didn't mind parting with 1. We always had her wonderful homemade raspberry jam & I thought it would be a great keepsake. She looked at me & said"Oh, honey, I through out all my old silverware as the kids got me a lovely all matching set of stainless steel. (It was my cousins that had bought it- my aunt didn't have any kids of her own) She felt so bad, I told her even better than a spoon would be some of her recipes so I did get a couple. Seems she never wrote them down & we had to make the ginger cookies so she could figure out what she used. I watched her make bread which she did every other day until she was over 100. But mine just didn't turn out like hers. She had a "feel" for it. Spoon would have been nice because each was different & ruffled bowl of spoon & fancy stuff on handles, she had the prettiest spoons ever & hope someone digging in the trash at the dump found them. After she broke her hip had to go into a home with her hubby. He died before she did. I have a Jonquil pattern spoon & couple with roses that are similar to what she had. My MIL started looking for me after that & I inherited couple from my grandmother with roses on them with the fancy bowls.

Pretty! If you cut it close to the end you could wear a little flower as a pin. Then you would have a pretty tube to use in another craft. I've seen little bud vase pins they are quite nice. Not sure how they are to wear tho. kathy

I always load knives point up, at the very back. Forks and spoons are alternating as others have suggested and my DW manual suggested to prevent nesting. I had a brief period where I loaded knives point down, all I ended up with were duller knives and broken points. I will continue in my method of ALWAYS unloading knives and other sharp/breakable items first but I won't change my DW loading method or switch to hand washing.

In addition to being beautiful it also holds a special meaning. Here's how: I drilled holes in the silverware with a 5/16" metal/tile bit and used crimp beads to secure the fishing line to the light fixture cap. I flattened the silverware by banging it with a 3 lb. sledge hammer - this worked better on the carpet in the basement than on the garage floor. Fishing line was used to string the beads and hold the pieces of silver. I had planned on twisting the tines of the forks but they're fairly short so I decided to wait and do that on the next one I make. Member kingscrew added this TIP: I have been using glass beads too. It's very relaxing to do while TV is on in evening. The reason for flattening the spoon is to change the sound. The more individual little "dings" on each one the more variation you get with the sound. I like hanging the knives because the three shapes look so good and the hollow handles on the silverplate knives are so easy to drill. And Member Lara adds another TIP: You might want to attach a fishing swivel to the top, so it moves round and round, oh don't worry, they will still clang, just not as much.
