Ewwww! Coffee pots in hotel rooms?

A friend of mine and I were chatting about hotels when my DH and I were planning our last trip, and she asked me if we ever used the complimentary coffe service in the rooms. I said yes, sometimes and she then asked if I EVER saw any clean pots in the maids' carts. Noooo...well, she said..just how do they clean them? UGH. Visions of dirty rags swooshing around in those pots have since kept me from using them!

Is she paranoid? Am I? How do those things get cleaned? I really have never seen a stack of new pots in those carts....your thoughts?

Good question. I never gave it a moment's thought but then since my husband is the only one who drinks it I guess I don't care. Making the coffee would boil out any bacteria I assume. On the other hand, I wouldn't think of going to a hotel without flip flops in my suitcase because there is no way I am putting my bare feet down on the carpet or bathroom vinyl.

Actually, I don't think the water boils enough to destroy any germs.....yuck!

Yeah, I am strongly considering another light fixture. I am very happy with the one I've got, but it won't fit on lower shelves - I need to shave off about an inch off the 13-inch depth of the fixture. Thinking of sawing grooves on the sides of the fixture, so that it can be slid into the shelving unit. Looks like it can be done. There are four shelves for plants with the fifth top shelf for the fixture itself. I am definitely not getting four fixtures in total - thinking on hanging the lights every other shelf, but setting pots looser, so that some light reaches the lower shelves, where more shade tolerant plants will live. >> are you combining [plants] because of limited light/shelving? Several reasons. I like the look of full pots. Aesthetics can be improved (I would not do it otherwise). Experimenting with combos is interesting. Limited space with good light (plenty of other space though). All of these are my reasons. >> another thing I would do - hang smaller plants off the sides, elevated mid-shelf to maximize exposure. Yes, I also thought of that. I deliberately bought the 4-foot wide light fixture for the 3-foot wide shelf to max the light availability for plants, and because 4-ft fixtures are so much more widely available. Those plants off the sides of the shelves are hopefully benefiting from the light, as well as from slightly higher humidity because plants are grouped.

My friend gave me a single-cup/(mug - if it's short enough) maker with a permanent basket. Open the top panel, put a spoonful of grounds into the basket ... pour in the mug-ful of water ... turn on the switch. In three minutes - mug full of coffee. Being lazy, I like to add the sugar first, to let the falling coffee do part of the stirring. But that entails carrying the water from the jug in a different mug ... not such a big problem, since I have two hands. Water from the tap/my well is polluted: I bring water in jugs from the city. I find that I can add about five spoons of grounds before the blast of steam at the end of the brew blows grounds out into the water reservoir. At which time it becomes advantageous to throw all of the grounds into the compost bucket and start over. If you try to make a new mug-ful without adding new grounds ... the coffee's a bit thin. ole joyfuelled ... with a bit o' fuelling help from a shot o' coffee, from time to time

Haha Misty. I had a similar experience not too long ago. We planned a weekend in Ithaca, NY.. a much needed getaway. Unfortunately it was parents' weekend at Cornell and the hotels and inns were full. The only room we could find was in the turret of a seemingly very nicely appointed inn. Oh boy was our impression wrong. We walk into the room-- connected to the rest of the inn by an uncovered bridge to the turret-- there in front of us was a round bed with mirrors on the ceiling.. and LAWN FURNITURE stuffed into the very small space between the bed and the round walls. The bed was pretty much the whole room. There was a lovely jacuzzi tub with beautiful views but it was set immediately above the bed-- so that one (or two) could presumably roll out of the tub into the bed. YUCK. I wondered how or if they kept the mattress clean. (Though I have a vague recollection that it may have been a waterbed hahah) We got a good laugh out of the whole experience but man, it was so not my idea of sexy or romantic... and we actually paid MORE for that room. That said, it is usually the small inns that I want to steal ideas from.. not the hotels.

This happened to me. In my younger days, I had a desk job and drank several cups of coffee a day. On Saturdays, I might sleep a little later and did not drink mcuh coffee. Often, I had no coffee on Saturdays. I began to experience a sick headache on some Saturdays and it would not correct until I vomited. After that, I was ok. It was caffeine withdrawal and I had not recognized it. Those headaches went away after I began to limit my caffeine intake during the week and starting on Wednesday, tapering back to very little by Friday. I switched to caffeine free soda. I do have caffeinated drinks on occasion, but do not consume it on a regular basis.

Never see new blankets or comforters on those carts, either. Or pillows. Ewwww....so now not only do I continue to bring my own pillow...but a blankie, too?

Or I could just stay home....;-(

Hotel rooms bother me a bit also, even nice ones. The blankets have been used before, so I always keep the sheet folded back over the top edge of the blanket. It probably is wise to wear flipflops in the room. My husband fixes and drinks the coffee, but I do not.

On the other hand, millions of people stay in hotels with no ill effects, so just some general precautions like those above are plenty I believe.

I always run a carafe full of water through the coffeemaker before making coffee and discard, to clean out both the carafe and the plumbing.

We make and drink the coffee and I don't even think about it.
Now, the blankets, how many chins (or whatever) have rubbed it. I make sure I have the sheet between me and the blanket.
We have stayed at ***** hotels and less, and there was one time I didn't even take off my clothes, I think the 10-20 minutes I slept, my head didn't even touch the pillow. It was awful, but it was that or sleep in the car and I begged DH to sleep in the car!
We were leaving on an early morning flight and we are two hours from the airport and that was the only hotel that had availability.
I know why!
We were trying to make it easy on ourselves, but in retrospect I would have rather got up at one or two in the morning and left for the airport. It was the alltime worse evening I have ever had, in a hotel room.

I know what you mean, I am grossed out with the coffee pots in hotel rooms too. I always take a small bottle of dish soap in my bathroom bag. I use it for various reasons, coffee pot being one of them. Makes me feel a whole lot better. I enjoy the convenience of coffee in my room. I always take booties for my feet too.

We never make coffee in the hotel rooms. I just take their little coffee packets home with us, and use them in my little 4-cup coffeepot in my home office!

You could bring a Hot Shot or your own little coffee maker from home if the hotel-provided ones bother you. I like SassyinAK's suggestion, makes sense.
