Jim, I think your better half did an excellent job both on the photos and the information on her trip. Love the doors. Re the narrow street, I've seen several of those in my travels. They were early security systems. As Jim said,. paraphrasing , they were to stop bad guys from entering the buildings. From what I was told on my travels, is that they were built to protect the money centers. mostly cash and gold, from robbers. We went into an old money center. The high windows/peep-holes were meant to allow the people inside to be able to see out but did not allow the people to see in. In one case, I saw steps built into the bottom of the door so people could climb up and see who were outside.

I did see this interesting building. Even with much research, I cannot determine what is at the top of the stairs - it might be a nunnery. I have figured out the address: Borgo Sonto Spirito 21. And, of course, a souvenir shop was right there.

Love the pics and the comments. It is so nice to see that other countries save their history. I live in silicon valley, where "new" is best. As far as I know, we have one (1) historic adobe building. The question about if people these days have the patience to do that kind of work. My answer is yes, but as Jim says, it takes money. Since our neighborhood has moved into the high end, and there is a lot of money here, we see excellent workmanship in the new houses/buildings, especially tile and brick work. From what I know, artisans from other countries are brought over to do the work. But that is nothing new, after looking at the history of the American Palaces built in the 20-30thies, they also brought over artisans from the old country.

So many ferries in Italy. It is the best way to get from on port to another. Some are small and others are huge. From here one can go to other parts of Sicily, Sardinia or many ports on the mainland of Italy.
