Trash To Treasure

Window wall

I needed a visual divider between my patio and a small daylily/hosta garden. I thought this was a good solution to keep the dog and visiting young children from walking off the patio into the garden. The window came right out of someones trash pile and the color is matched to the house.

That looks good. My sister-in-law has a cafe, and she took some old windows and hung them from the ceiling with white chains and placed wreaths or vines on them and they look great!!

Hi, Laura (and Dave). As a design firm we are often asked to consider removing these architectural elements--particularly in our Miami Office. There are a couple of things we look for to determine feasibility. 1) Age of home. This information provides some insight into how the fireplace may have been constructed. 2) Are there any existing drawings filed at the local building department? This is helpful for obvious reasons. 3) the exterior may be stucco finish but what type of construction is the exterior wall? Is it concrete masonry unit (CMU, aka "cinder blocks") or is it wood frame construction? The above are the drivers of cost/feasibility. Fireplaces that are masonry framed (not just brick veneer lined interior) are supported with a footing at the base, below grade. This makes it very difficult to simply chop out the bottom 1/3 and run a beam across to carry the load (weight) of the upper 2/3s. Feasible, but impractical--especially if windows are spanning below. So depending on how the fireplace was built (CMU vs Wood) you will likely have to remove all of the masonry from the top of the flue down to the floor level so you don't see the bulge of the old fireplace below the window sill. This is a costly undertaking that affects the roof and the exterior wall. I would say more than 8k of work--not including an architect and his/her structural engineer. JT, Registered Architect

Ooooh yes, love the French return idea. The spacing between the windows and the doors and the windows and the walls is a bit thin, I might lose a bit of light, but with the right fabric it could work! Thank you 👍🏼

@1rockin_robin AKA "struggle bus" : ) who is "blue" but not blue enough.... What you wanted, envisioned........and what you got.....(QUITE accidentally happened ) You chose a feature paper that required a lot more commitment, and a better understanding of what might happen without that commitment' You wanted this: Not so much this below, yes? To get what you envisioned, successfully? You need, to lower by a lot, the jarring contrast between the "feature" and what got left in the dust to be completely overwhelmed by that feature. Three walls need to be painted deep dark blue, and believe it or not the room will feel larger, with far better placement of the high jazzy contrast. The whites will pop and that room won't feel dreary, nor darker , it will ( surprise ) feel brighter. Yes to curtain panels on the right window, and in the right color This isn't too good below........sort of makes you wonder what happened down here? They went on vacation, before they finished? Sooo much better, now I am not a lonely leftover. Someone above shall ask: Why can't she just add deep blue curtains? Because it won't really fix what feels wrong, and there are,...... still two more walls, naked or nearly naked. No laws say you must have/USE two windows. Either get a slab front shutter made and paper it, or .........have a correctly sized piece of drywall cut, get more paper for either option, paper to match, mount right over the entire window..and "disappear" that very offending window. Get the result you truly intended. More paint and paper please!

I think you need think about your personal design style. When talking about white vs black windows - not the trim around the window, but the windows themselves - I think black windows look best when black is part of the overall color scheme (black lamps or black legs on the furniture or black knobs and pulls . . .) I am much less prone to adding black design elements to my home than either brushed nickel, wood, white or color. I just took a look at 3 of my rooms: - Other than a TV hidden in a closed cabinet I have nothing black in my bedroom, - I have a clock with black hands in my bathroom and - My office chair has a black base and my computer stuff (monitor, keyboard, mouse. . . ) are black. If you look around your home do you natural gravitate toward black or is it the exception? The other thing I would think about is the window coverings you want to use and how they will be impacted by the color of the window. Black windows can show through the window coverings more than white.

Terrific -- I was recently given some old windows --- have them stored in the barn --- loved the divider and need one similarly placed to yours -- hope you don't mind if I "snatch" the idea. Also really like what Coppertop shared -- had been trying to figure out how to use a window
as a headboard -- can suspend and add a grapevine wreath and some dried pieces --- it will look terrific --- thanks for the ideas.

I love it! Hmmm, a trip out to the reuse garage at the local county landfill looks to be in order the first of next week..I've been wanting to do the headboard idea, but our bedroom is done in a hunting cabin theme and haven't quite figured out how to carry it off..

OklaMoni--nope, no glass. I worry about little ones tripping and getting hurt. The iron crosses were in the $1 clearance pile at Michael's and the balls are just styrofoam with pebbles mosaiced to. I need to add more chain so the balls fall closer to the center of the panes.

No need to ask to use the idea, I figure the more the merrier! And post your version if you decide to make one.
