Well then, letmesee here. I've been impressed with the roses overall at Tropic World Nursery in Escondido, but they don't have a website. Here's the contact info though. It's right on a frontage road to the I-15. Deer Springs Road offramp. It is fun to just browse there also -- big place -- lots of interesting stuff beyond roses. Tropic World Nursery 26437 N Centre City Pkwy Escondido CA 92026-7808 760-746-6108 And, I just got an email from Laguna Hills Nursery in Lake Forest that says all their roses are 60% off starting now. That would make them about $12. You may just want to wait until you get back here. They usually have a good group of Austins there, as you probably know. Kathy

We've done this drive many times. If you want fast driving, most people take the I-5, which is about as colorless and blah (not to mention crowded with semis) as you'll find in California. We haven't been south of Bakersfield on that highway. Your restaurant selection would be limited to fast food places. In addition, you would need to take the 101 to Paso Robles and then turn east on the 46, not a fun drive, to connect with the 5. The other choices are to take the 101 all the way from Salinas, or the 1 via Big Sur. If you take the 1, you'll have to swing east to the 101 south of Hearst Castle, since it doesn't go all way through. It's a stunning drive if you aren't afraid of hanging out over the Pacific Ocean on a narrow twisting road (I am). I agree with Kkay that Nepenthe is a spectacular place to dine, IF there's no fog. If you take the 101, Pismo Beach has one of the most popular and well-rated restaurants on the Central Coast, Mclintock's, which is basically a steakhouse. We have also several favorite places in SLO, Solvang, and Los Olivos, but they will be time-consuming. I didn't know that the Madonna Inn was famous for its urinals! The main thing about it is that it is all pink, even the sugar, and its decor is pretty wild. It's okay for a one-time stop, just to say you've been there. Where will you be staying in Monterey? Here is a link that might be useful: Mclintocks

There is alot to see. If you go up interstate 5, that will take you up fast, 101 is scenic, but bad traffic. I personally would avoid LA area, Ventura has a nice mission, as does Santa Barbara. Bakersfield is nice also. Around Santa Nella is good, If you have children look for Montery Bay aquarimarine. Go to Auto Club and discuss what you want to see. Also go into the motels/hotels in your area and look for broucheurs. No matter where you go it will be fast heavy traffic. Go to the library, and look for Sunset Magazine. Lots of ads etc as the Coastal Mag also

We have been following these terrible events on TV over here in the UK. Our next door neighbour left England for San Diego a few years ago with barely a backward glance at his ladyfriend and two small children; can't help hoping he is OK.
