Trip to the Canadian Maritime Provinces in Sept.

My daughter (25) and I are taking the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth, NS then driving slowly up to PEI for 5 days, beginning Sept. 5.

After she flies back to Baltimore, I'll have another week to roam and was thinking of going up to Newfoundland - possibly L'Anse aux Meadows (I'm Scandinavian) before heading back to Yarmouth to catch the ferry back to Portland and back to reality.

I'd appreciate any advice and information on places to visit and places to stay or not stay and anything else you might like to share.

We did Nova Scotia & Newfoundland last yr, taking the ferry between. Thoroughly enjoyed L'Anse aux Meadows - think it's well worth the trip. Ate at a wonderful restaurant in Corner Brook both going up and coming back.
Gros Morne park is wonderful, too. If you would like more details, I can give them to you. We stayed at some good B &B's - I will have to look in records. Can't remember everything off the top of my head.

Barb-Canada has a really impressive and active tourism council. If you go to Google, type in "tourism Prince Edward Island" (or Newfoundland).They'll send you a nice large packet of info. that will arrive in plenty of time for your fall vacation. This will be the first summer in years that we won't be in PEI-headed to Cape Breton, instead. You will be in heaven, I promise!
P.S. While you're at it sign up on the PEI tourism website for their annual drawing for a free vacation there.

Yesterday, I dropped into one of the Canadian Tires in Guelph for something. I just had to walk down to the flower end, and noted that they had potted foxglove on sale. They were in amazing shape, not root bound, healthy, just starting to bloom, and a very good price. I actually left and checked out walmart ( which had nothing of interest ) and Home Depot ( whichh had even less of interest ). I actually went back to Canadian Tire and got a couple to stick into the garden. I also picked up some Black Eyed Susans which were in good shape, and found a couple of corners to stick them in. If I hadn't trimmed my hedges in the morning, I wouldn't have had the space to fill. That should teach me a lesson or two. LOL

I can imagine you ambling along gardens as you go from one to the next, much like other people go antiquing. I have never been able to visit gardens while on vacation due to strenuous no votes by the family. I go to New York often, my sister lives in Yonkers, and I just may go to Wave Hill on my next trip up (she stamps her feet and says). I read a book by a woman in Canada, can't remember the name now but it was basically about having no lawn -- turning the entire yard into beds or paths, etc. It was a great book (I really enjoyed it) and it also conveyed a little of the feeling of more green-space awareness. Lastly, you say Carmen "still flower gardens 1 acre." That is an inspiration to us all. I just love the image of the lupine, irises, daylilies, various tulips, peonies, etc. in rows. Sept. 27: A juvenile male hummingbird stopped by! This is the feeder on my deck. I was sitting out there and the hummer was OK with me being there but got spooked when I pulled out the camera so I didn't get a good shot of the whole head and throat. Wow, it's funny how people have such different ideas of what is worth seeing. I've been to Niagra five times, with and without kids. I could stare at those Falls endlessly. Every time I go I do every possible "tour" of the Falls. The Cave of the Winds is not to be missed. Sometimes I get off the MOM and get right back on the next trip, and the next. I'm mesmerized by those Falls and the closer I get to them the better. I'm not fond of the cable car over the whirlpool, but I do it if the others in my group want to do it. I heard the cave that goes behind the Falls is closed now and if so I'll be heartbroken as that is a fantastic experience. I am told that Goat Island is the best of all the attractions in NF, but somehow I have never managed to get over there. There is a safari/amusement park between NF and Toronto...my whole family loves that place. The only thing I've really enjoyed seeing in TO is the "castle" that is there. I spent a week at 1,000 islands once. It was a long week, lol. The highlight of that trip was also a castle built on a privately owned island. NF does have a horrible area full of mini golf, funhouses, ripleys, etc.

I'm from Newfoundland and I've been to L'Anse aux Meadows several times. I'll give you some links at the end that should be helpful. L'Anse aux Meadows is a wonderful place to visit, it's a long drive from the ferry though, about 7 hours if you don't stop!

You'll have to drive through Gros Morne National Park to get there, if you have some time you might want to check out the areas there, like the Western Brook fijords, Western Brook beach with its sand dunes (not that common in Nfld), Bonne Bay, the Tablelands near Trout River, etc.

If you're going to L'Anse aux Meadows you might want to stay in St. Anthony, it's the closest larger town with hotels, restaurants, banks, hospital, etc.

Near L'Anse aux Meadows there is Norsted, a reconstructed Viking village. It's really interesting and worth a visit as well.

Back from my trip. It was too short. I have to save Newfoundland for another trip, it's needs more time than I had.

The trip over from Portland to Yarmouth, NS on the ferry Scotia Prince - save your money and drive, it's not worth it. The drive along the coast of Maine and into Canada is worth doing, very scenic and not difficult at all.
