Reputable Trip Insurance Company

Does anyone have a recommendation on a reputable company for travel cancelation/medical insurance company? We are trveling to Peru next November. As I understand it, most companies that offter the coverage are not regulated by the state?

My tour companies have always furnished the insurance company for me. The one I use now is called Travel Guard and it came through with $8,000. when I had to cancel my last trip. My guide said she usually has to fight to get her customer's money back not in my case. I broke my arm and couldn't travel because of dangers of falling, therapy and PAIN. You have to have a health reason, statement from the doctor, death certificate if a loved one dies. You really have to prove you have a good reason to cancel, can't just change your mind. I never travel with out insurance. Years ago I had to cancel because my husband was diagnossed with cancer and needed treatments, it was about $7,000.

What if you do not have a tour company and have booked your flights and hotels on line through booking.com? Does booking.com provide travel insurance?

I used CSA Travel Insurance a few years ago when we booked a vacation property on the Gulf Coast, worried that the September date was in the midst of hurricane season. Sure enough, Hurricane Isaac hit a week before we were supposed to arrive and badly damaged the property. We had a very good experience with CSA. The communication was great and we received a full refund on the cost of the rental, which was our only pre-paid cost since we were planning to drive there, not fly.

We have had USAA for nearly 16 years. We've had two smaller claims for our house - a leak in our roof that damaged our bedroom wall and a leak in our water heater that flooded our rec room. Both of those were many years ago. We've had at least 1-2 claims from car accidents that were dh's fault. Never had any problems with the homeowner's claims but our auto insurance went up slightly after dh's second accident, but mainly b/c they were within months of each other. I absolutely love USAA - they have always been incredibly helpful whenever we've called about anything (we have several different accounts with them). Dh's family had USAA when he was growing up. Their house caught on fire after faulty wiring in a Sears refrigerator in their garage caused a fire. They had incredible service from USAA. Someone had a horrible time with Allstate years ago. His house burned down after catching fire during renovation. I don't remember the story now, but he ended up suing them. I remember going by the house one day and he had a huge sign posted in front of his house chastising Allstate. I don't recall what exactly happened but I believe he did win the case eventually.

I've been checking weather reports for the South Pacific, and it looks like we will have decent weather for our trip. That was my main concern regarding insurance. We will not be doing anything risky that I think we would need insurance for, and so I think I will forego it this time, but I will still consider it for the future.\ As for bags not arriving, since we have a non-stop flight, I don't think there is much chance that they would get lost. I try to get non-stop flights whenever possible for this reason, but that was not possible when we went to Brazil, and nothing bad happened. I had not been told about trip/travel insurance before we went, and as it turned out, we did not need it. We also had non-stop flights to Rome when we went to Italy, but I would have been concerned if we had had to change planes in Paris or London. This information has been very helpful to me, and I will remember it for future trips.

I thought I'd chime in with an update: Here in Colorado we have had a LOT of BIG hail. Roofing claims are off the charts! *-My insurance deductible AND depreciation were deducted from the total damage estimate. *-They cut me a check....for about a third of what the total damages came to. I think their estimate was low. *-I then scheduled a NEW roof. *- Will take photos of the roof just before they're done, with the roofing estimate paperwork...send that in to the Insurance company and they will reimburse me the depreciation. If I don't repair the huge double redwood deck(needs sanded & stained), cedar fence/dents or gutters/dents, I will have enough to pay for the roof. So in essence....YES....I'm getting a new roof free and clear from the insurance company....but I'm using the money alotted for the deck, fence & gutters repair to do that. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Everything went as the OP said....except....there were other damages that were paid out, but only had enough to pay for the roof.

You can use tripinsurancestore.com to get side by side comparisons of different insurance companies. It really depends upon your individual needs. Do you have a pre-existing medical condition? Do you want cancel for any reason coverage? Does your credit card have any travel insurance coverage?

Travel insurance also should cover transportation back to your home if you become sick, or in case of death. This can be a huge expense so should be considered.
