Southern New Jersey vacation ideas wanted

We will be going to NJ in July and I am looking for ideas . I will have three kids, 6-11, with me. How is the Cape May Park and Zoo? Does anyone know of any family restaurants that are nice? My husband doesn't like the "chain" ones, like Outback,Ground Round, etc. We plan on visiting Cape May beach,but I was wondering about parks,places to hike,kids' museums, anything like that. We will be staying in Vineland, so if anyone can give me any ideas on places south of there, it will be appreciated.

Great zoo, not too large so you can do it in the morning and still do something else in the afternoon. It gets crowded on rainy days though.
If you like birds then plan a day at Cape May point and the lighthouse. There they have all kinds of programs for kids to get them interested in waterfoul and the such. I have 2 kids ages 10 and 14 and they enjoy it there.
You can plan a picnic there and if conditions are good, the dolphins come very close to the shore. Absolutely breathtaking.
The lighthouse has 199 steps so the smaller children may have trouble making the climb but the view is worth it.

A MUST see is a great place called "Yesterday's heros Ballpark cafe"
I see your from New York....This place has and extensive collection of Yankee's and Phillies memorabilia including a lifesize Babe Ruth figure, actual staduim seats and more baseball cards then I can count.
I can't say for sure but last year on Monday nites it was kids night with a dj spinning kids toons, clowns and magicians ect...
The food is acutually VERY good as are the drinks.
The attire is casual.
Another great place that if family friendly is "Mangia Mangia". Homemade Italian, huge portions (sharing is allowed) and very reasonable prices. Casual attire-no bar but you can BYOB is you desire.
On Washington Street there is a place called "The Pilot House. Its slightly more upscale but they are still reasonable by Cape May standards. They have nightly specials which almost always has crab cakes which are delicious. If you go with children, go early because the bar gets busy after dark.
One last place to recommend is actually not even in Cape May but its only a short hop. Its called the "Crab House at 2 mile landing". Its the kind of place that has brown paper on the tables for steamed crabs. They have awesome burgers as well as bar-b-que chicken and ribs.
Very casual attire and a really great deck to eat outside and watch the boat traffic.

I could recommend a few other places that are more upscale so let me know.

Well I already mentioned the lighthouse but if your up for a hike park your car along the promonade at the end of the beach and hike to the lighthouse. Its a great walk along a mostly deserted beach..
Cold Springs Village is a restored historical village, like a small version of Colonial Williamsburg.
Take the ferry ride to Lewes Delaware. Bring your car and go the the fabulous outlets for tax-free shopping. The boat ride is fun and relaxing and there they have fun activities for the kids including a certificate to be an honorary captian.
The Physick mansion often runs childrens afternoon tea with clowns and musicians and the such.

Keep in mind there is no boardwalk in Cape May. But if your kids like rides there are amusements in WildWood...just a short drive from Vineland. Again I would recommend going early as when it gets later, the older teens and younger adults come out and things get a little rowdie. We usually go about 2:00-3:00 in the afternoon to let them do the rides and such, have pizza and custard on the boardwalk and head back to Cape May by dark.
There is nothing wrong with WildWood...its just geared more for the bar crowd.

We prefer the quiet-laid back Cape May.

Our vacation this year is the 19th of July and we are really looking forward to it.

That DB is grafted on Dr. Huey. I don't recommend amending the hole except for adding the superphosphate (put it in the hole then cover with soil, then the plant). I usually amend the entire bed in the fall, but you don't say if your soil is sandy and needs the amendments. You want to avoid what we call the "bathtub effect" where the hole retains too much water and it doesn't drain out properly. Here we may or may not have that problem because of the sandy soil (in some cases). Make sure the union is 2" below the soil. Don't "tamp". Backfill and use water to fill in the holes. Use your hands to press in the soil to make sure there are no air pockets. But you don't want to compress the soil around the roots. Mulch the soil, but keep the mulch away from the canes. Water after you plant, then monitor the soil. You shouldn't have to water daily, especially since we are due for more rain this week (thu - sat). You'll probably get in two applications of Rose-tone, July and August, then stop (no fertilizing after August). Once you see new growth after planting, you can try a weak (1/4 - 1/2 strength) solution of fish emulsion once a week until you start the Rose-tone. You're going to need a regular fungicide treatment for DB.

Annie - I also was going to suggest New Mexico, as it didn't appear on your list. That looks to me like a very good tour by Taucks - it covers exactly the places i would suggest, Taos, Bandelier, Georgia O'Keeffe's homestead, the pueblos... It would also be nice to have the lectures and special visits that come with the trip. However, NM is a state very oriented towards visitors, and is easy to navigate by yourselves, especially if you explore it on the internet and do some reading in advance. Santa Fe, e.g., has some gorgeous inns and hotels, and excellent restaurants with varied cuisines, not to mention a stunning collection of art galleries (do not go to this city without a credit card). Several years ago DH and I made a special trip to NM to spend a week in Los Alamos, as DH is beyond fascinated by the story of Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project. We had a great time, searched out his house, visited the fascinating museum, explored the unique bookstores, drove along the perimeter of the National Laboratories - a huge area, and drove to various pueblos and Bandelier while there. That could be a good overnight for someone interested in the story of the Project. But the tour also looks fine. I also second the suggestion of Israel (where I lived for several years), a tiny country, the size of New Jersey, with an incredibly diverse population, and an excellent sense of preservation of historic sites, ranging from 5,000+ years ago up to the present, and very friendly people who like Americans.

@William NJzone7 The only way I know of to tag a responder with a reply is for the OP (you) to use the ”Thank” button available to only the OP. That generates an email notice to poster if they’ve set it up in their profile. Otherwise, just using ‘@‘ + choosing poster name from drop down as I did in this post with your name, alerts poster that reply is directed to them. Either way, any activity on posts one responds to is listed in the notification bell icon at top of Houzz discussion page. Whew! Long answer! I missed that you said planting border outside fence is 10’ wide. Sounds like the GG’s are best suited for your need. I looked them up for mature size & though Giants they are, they are shorter & narrower than the white pines you took out. But, the GG width - at base - is 12’ - 20’ so I’d increase the space between them beyond the 6’ I’m guessing your fence panels are & for sure plant them in middle of 10’ width. Seems like a solid view block really isn’t needed for the neighbors upstairs windows views - those are probably bedroom windows too. Theyhave their own trees at lower window height.
