Paint color/technique for new home

we just purchased a new home, which is a 1400sqft spec home. It is open concept. The living room/dining room color is BM CC-510, Buckhorn, kitchen and accent wall in dining room is HC-97, Hancock Gray, and hallway and entrance is HC-43.

The cabinets are alder, stained a dark brown which is sort of translucant, as you can see the grain in the wood. The floors are engineered hardwood in maple and the color would be a midtown brown.

The is alot of light coming in as it has windows from the east, west and south.

My question is: I find the Buckhorn to be a tad dark, and was thinking if I did a bagging on technique like I have in my home we are moving from. I would want something very subtle, maybe bagging on CC 500 or CC-490. The paint is Aura satin.

Any suggestions or advice? I don't really have photos yet as we haven't taken possesion of the house yet.

That is a beautiful huge window in your great room-- no wonder you have a ton of light. I'm not sure if I know what bagging is (although I suspect that it is the technique of painting over the base layer with another different color, and then taking off some of the top color with a scrunched up paper bag).

That being said, I usually think that faux finishes or paint techniques like that go best with certain kind of house styles. Does your house work with that type of paint technique? I also tend to worry that most paint techniques end up looking more dated than a flat wall color over time. Still, if you love that look now, you can always have it painted over later.

Have you thought about just painting over the wall with a color you like better? That would probably be your cheaper and easier bet. You could also add some beadboard or wainscoting to half the wall (with white down below( which lightens up the color quite a bit.

IMO blue/ grays are hard to work with if i have a client that has to paint before a house is completed i highly reccomend a pale grayed green it is much more neutral than gray and seems to work with everything. Sea Salt from Sherwin Williams is a good color it is not the same as BM sea salt.

It’s very hard to help you without photos. I wouldn’t invest in a sectional unless I had a very large area to fill. Actually, I take that back. My living room is 26’ x 35’ and I never considered buying a sectional. Instead, I bought an additional full-size sofa.

Hi Beth. Sigh... Our 1979 house had white primer on all interior walls when we bought it in 1998. So that's 19 years with the original owners not painting it. I had forgotten this more that, a couple years after we bought it, we had all the downstairs painted an off-white, still not realizing that was the first finish coat. I realized it when I was washing walls upstairs after finishing the downstairs. Then we went through some years thinking we would move. Now we have plans to gut the upstairs which will never see more than primer I guess.

I love the Buckhorn even though it's dark. If it really bothers you, I would paint it another color instead of adding a 2nd color to it.

I'm not sure I'd worry about it until you get your things in there. Yes, you'd have to move things around if you do decide it needs something done, but you may find you love it as it is. It certainly looks beautiful in the pictures. Congratulations!

I think it looks great as is!

But if YOU dislike the colors, repaint with colors YOU like. Don't just go over with another.
