We are going to San Diego, Ca., next week. We will also go to Tijuana, Mexico for a day trip while we are in San Diego. DH told me that we could bring back to US $400 of goods duty free (each) from Mexico.

What would you buy from Tijuana and where would you visit while in Tijuana?

Any info would be appreciated.

I can't imagine buying anywhere near $400 of stuff in Mexico, but when I go to TJ I usually buy Kahlua (about $8-$12 a bottle). Friends buy Tequila but I don't go near it. Also, I buy prescription meds, namely birth control pills and antibiotics. I have also bought muscle relaxers (Soma- about $35 a bottle). The clothes and jewelry is all cheap knock-offs so I usually stay away. If you get a chance, go to Cesar's. This is where Cesar salad was created! Who would have thought that Cesar salad came from Tijuana?!?! Are you just going to TJ, or south? Puerto Nuevo is a little fishing/lobster village a few miles south of Rosarito (about 1/2 hour from TJ). You can get delicious lobster (lingostina--the little ones), shrimp, and fish meals with tortillas, rice, and beans. Very yummy and very cheap! Last Sept, I went to Ensenada (about 1 1/2 hours south of TJ) and we hired a driver to take us to the Mexican wine region about 45 minutes inland from Ensenada. The wine wasn't very good, but the olives were delish and it was a fun adventurous day.

Thanks very much for your response. You have given me some good idea re things to do in Mexico. I like every one of your suggestions and surely would like to try it when we are in TJI.

We have never been to TJI, how safe is it to travel to Puerto Nuevo with a driver? I love to see the real Mexico not the tourism places. I also do not like to pay tourist rates for a taxi drive in Mexico? Is it possible to get local taxi driver rate in TJI?

We will be leaving for San Diego next Tuesday morning and I am very excited about the trip.

Cheryl I just found this post. I'm in extreme SW KS. Not in the mountains but have the heat, wind and dry conditions. I dug about 60-70% of my garlic over the last two days. I grew the 3 NM varieties you grew along with Santa Fe Rocomble. I'm originally from NM so like to grow varieties from there. And our climates are similar enough that usually what grows there does well here. We've been in a 4 year drought and have had constant wind all year. Had a late spring and the wind kept blowing tumble weeds in which caused some issues with the garlic. I tried to keep them removed but left some for 7-10 days in March and when I removed them some of the bulbs died and most that were covered didn't size up well. I purchased the Santa Fe Rocomble from the same place you got your NM varieties. The bulbs I received of it were small. So was surprised today when I dug it and the bulbs were nice and large. Chamisal Wild did well last year but it was one that was affected by the tumble weeds so didn't do as well this year. K's Backyard produced some nice bulbs. Ayacucho was covered by the tumble weeds. Lost several bulbs of it and most of the rest didn't size up well. I got two nice bulbs that wasn't covered and have 2-3 still to dig. I just hope I can get a few good cloves so I can grow it again. After it all dries I will cut the roots off and take notes and know more about what did well. I will try to remember to come back and list what did well. Jay

No, I have the old varieties that my grandmother had in Iowa: Sarah Bernhart,Festiva Maxima,etc. And yes, where I live the altitude is a mile high ..5200 ft elevation & I have the peonies where they get morning sun but afternoon shade because of our intense sun/heat here. Very dry & exceptionally windy this year too ... even for NM! I add bags of manure around the plants in early spring & when I empty the small fish pond each spring I always pour the pond water with the algae & other excrements around the peonies also (figured there were nutrients in that fish pond water that could be of use?!). Only thing I can figure with grandmother tossing the dish water around the peonies was maybe some nutrients ... phosphorus? Those old farm people had habits that were based on some facts they were unaware of I guess & passed from generation to generation!

My late DH and I spent a week at Santa Fe and Taos every year for 7 or 8 years. What did we do? We ate and shopped! LOL! We stayed at The Inn at Loretto most of the time and loved having breakfast on the patio there. And we ate dinner there several times too. Very nice! Another favorite place was La Casa Sena, just off the Plaza. Lunch in the courtyard, or a late drink or snack in the Cantina was great. The Pink Adobe was another favorite....in fact I had my birthday dinner there a couple of years. And we ate lunch there several times. We found the Coyote Cafe, "OK"....actually better than OK but not for the price. In Taos I don't think you can beat Doc Martin's in any way!.....except for price! Lots of $$ but worth it! We also ate several times at The Apple tree and loved that....but you had to be sure you reserved early! There was a place on the East side of the plaza that had dining on a second floor balcony where the people watching on the plaza was great. Good place for a beer and a bowl of chili....informal and good. And there is another place who's name escapes me...north of Santa Fe on the Opera road....think it was at Chimayo. Of course we ate lots of other places too....but those were the memorable ones where we returned to repeatedly. Enjoy!! Sounds like a great trip....and what fun to be part of the artist crowd!!
