Do you know any more history of the dolls? Yes, the wig is supposed to be glued on. It looks like an old mohair wig, and they were usually glued on with hide glue. It can be gently soaked off with warm water, if you want to remove it. Can you make out any other letters or markings on the smaller doll? Your Schmidt has a delightful face! The dolls with molded/painted hair were meant to represent babies, and weren't meant to have wigs, but some did. She looks like she would have been on a bent-limb body like your smaller doll. Are you sure the doll hasn't been pieced together? The head looks out of proportion for the body, although some doll factories and distributors made up dolls that way (rather than using a different head mold) so she may have come that way from the factory. The heads/faces can be cleaned with soap and water. Use a qtip and be gentle around the eyes and mouth. The bisque is very thin around the eye sockets, and too much pressure can break it. You also don't want to get water inside the heads around the eyes. Eyes are mounted with plaster of Paris, and they can fall out if wet. As a general rule, don't use any water on the body. Parts are made of carved wood (forearms, arms, ball joints) some is composition (hands) and some is paper mache (torso and legs.) Water can damage all of these things. You can use a dry microfiber cloth to get off surface dirt, and if it's still really grimy, you can use a soft eraser- a pink pencil eraser from the dollar store works fine. Storing them in a climate controlled environment, out of direct sunlight is best. I'd be careful with them on top of a bookshelf. If they fall off, it's all over!

Now that I know what they are (chalkware) I was able to do some further research and I suspect they are lamps from Reglor of California. Reglor produced lamps, typically in male/female pairs utilizing the same paint colors as shown on my pair. They didn't use gilding as far as I can tell, but following your suggestion to google "Siamese Dancers", I did find a similar pair with the gilding. I can't verify the stamp either, since the bottom of the lamps is covered in green felt and I don't want to start pulling them apart. There may be a California connection somewhere as I also have several pairs of earrings purchased at J. Magnin's Department Store in San Franciso (they still have the original tags attached) that were in the attic with the lamp. Are there any markings on the bottom to indicate who made the ceramic or porcelain? If so, you could try posting on the antiques forum to get information about it. Go to eBay and search with the words "ornate ceramic lamp vintage" It will give you an idea of what lamps are out there. Because lamp bases don't wear out, there are lots of vintage lamps out there. And remember, when you look at the pricing, it's the "sold" listings that show the true value, not the asking prices.

My 1935 house has the same "problem." On every ceiling you can see the 16"x4' seams. It is also like that on all of the upstairs walls and many of the downstairs walls. We did a kitchen remodel a couple of years ago and it was interesting to see that the some of the walls were plaster and lath and some were either the gypsom or beaverboard described by others. I thought maybe they splurged for plaster and the living and dining rooms, but there didn't seem to be much method to the madness. I'm not sure whether its the plaster coat or the boards themselves but they are literally rock solid. I have to use a drill to hang anything, and many times the drill bits break. The grooves don't bother me as much as the peeling paint. In a few of the seams on the ceilings the paint literally falls right off. I'm not sure if I should blame it on a bad paint job or the materials in the ceilings. I also have the faux-tile that ken tn speaks of. It went all around the kitchen from the floor until about five feet up. It was in the bathroom and the half bath as well. In the kitchen the previous owner just plastered over it, but you can still see the pattern in places. I'm not sure if it was a stamp or something premade, but it is definitely not 4" ceramic tile. I don't know that the finish or paint colors have made much of a difference. It's very visible on the flat white ceilings and very visible on the various colors of satin walls. I did find many of the same old colors, lots of teal, green and coral around too.
