Suggestions for Los Angeles?

My sweet hubby gave me a trip for Xmas & after much self debate-have opted for LA-versus Vegas. Figured I could always hop a plane over for a day trip if I want to.
I need to know what things are fun to do-I want to do the Farmer's Market & hit a taping at CBS studio-isn't that just across the street-kind of?
I was there in '73, so I'm sure much has changed. Been to Universal, Graumanns, & Lawry's-but would like to stay near the Market area I think, as I really don't want to rent a car-I'll do taxi's.
Not really into Museums-more the club scene, shows, etc. Any suggestions as to things to see & do, hotel selections, shopping, etc?
Also where is the safest places for a woman traveling alone to go at night? Thanks for any input!

I'm in the Los Angeles area. The safest place for women to go traveling alone at night? Surely you jest! Los Angeles is not a safe place at all for women to be alone late at night. There are many safe community areas within Los Angeles county but few to none of those areas are really surrounded by the touristy type areas. With tourists, there is readily available spending money and that is also where you will find the professional homeless beggars and nut cases lurking around everywhere. Also, as for taking taxis, be prepare to spend a SMALL FORTUNE traveling that way. It will easily be in excess of $50 to go from the airport to a hotel near Farmer's Market. Expect a 3 mile ride to be at least $25 each way.
One of the things that I have learned from traveling around the world is that tourists rarely want to shop or go where the locals shop or go. Tourists want "Once In A Lifetime Experiences!". Locals want to avoid these places at all costs. I suggest you get a good book (maybe Insight Guide) on traveling to the Los Angeles area and start reading about the places that are available to visit, narrow down the areas you believe you would like to visit and then post some questions concerning specific areas. Los Angeles is an emormous area and anyone planning on getting around by taxi needs to have some good help from maps and a book to decide what area they want to visit and if that area can offer what they want to experience.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

3rd St Promenade in Santa Monica. Shopping, food and GREAT people watching. Of course the Santa Monica Pier is only a couple of blocks away.

Ronald Reagan Presidential libray in Simi Valley (about 30min away up the 405 to the 118)

Ventura Harbour - An hour away by car via the 101 or a more scenic route via PCH through Malibu.

From what came up when I googled it, I think "Proud Pothos" is the name of the arrangement, not the plant. Like if it was a "Get-Well Dieffenbachia" or something. Or at least the pictures all looked like any other pothos. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) will survive all kinds of conditions; there's really not too much way to get them wrong. The main ways they go bad is if the plant gets too cold (they'll survive colder, but I wouldn't let it get below 60F), too dry (the plant will wilt and eventually start throwing leaves), or too wet (leaves will yellow and drop, usually starting from the oldest ones nearest the base of the plant and working their way toward the tips). If you're not sure if the plant needs water: don't water. When you do water, get the soil thoroughly soaked and then dump out the water that runs through the pot. (If the pot it's in has no drainage holes, move the plant to a pot that does.) Everything else is pretty easy: they're usually pretty good as far as pests, heat, dry air, low light, etc.

Nursery suggestions north of Los Angeles?

I second Bay Laurel Nursery, Another further North is Hometown Nursery in Paso Robles on Spring St, then there is Treeman in Templeton, If you're into herbs, on 46 west there is Sycamore Farms in Paso Robles, I don't know what they have, their barn burned down a couple years ago. On 1 there is Grow Nursery, on the north end of Cambria. Which if you took 1 down to 46 across, you could hit all the nurseries in Paso Robles, Templeton, then Atascadero, Santa Margarita, and sweep down to SLO and further south. Over the Grade there is Ron's Nursery In Arroyo Grande, it's got the quality of plants you'd find in a floral shop. It's on thirteenth street. There is also Oceano Nursery, which is more interesting, it has lots of stuff to look at, but it is more junk yard retro, than upscale.

Thanks for that. Watering 3x per week in a coastal (foggy) setting seems like far too much. I have a friend in Phoenix who waters 2x per week, 75 minutes each time, even when the temp is 115 degrees, to keep his bermuda looking good. 75 minutes equals 1/2 inch for him with his low flow sprinklers. MN, you said, "We're about 3.25 miles from the coast." Since you did not say 'beach,' I assume you are not from SoCal. K Laurence is absolutely right about drought and watering restrictions. For that reason Marathon is out of the question. Only warm season grasses have any chance of working in future California. Those include bermuda, St Augustine, UC Verde buffalo, and sometimes, zoysia. If you are going to be rough housing on it, then zoysia would not work, because it takes sooooo frrrriiiikkkken loooonnnng to recover from damage. From my experience with it, once it is damaged, it is done for the season and will not return until next April. With that in mind, St Augustine is the only choice if the yard gets any shade. For example the spot where the 4x8 plywood is laying on the ground would never support bermuda or buffalo grass, but St Aug would do fine in there. So would flowers or many other ground covers - just not bermuda or buffalo. Bermuda and buffalo have one advantage over St Augustine: if you absolutely have to stop watering throughout the heat of summer, bermuda and buffalo will go dormant. St Aug is likely to go dead and require replacing. These three grasses spread by runners across the top of the ground and do not have seed. There are bermuda and buffalo grasses which do have seeds, but those are the wild varieties without the benefits of hybridization. The most popular bermuda is Tif 419. When I was a kid in the 60s that stuff was very expensive. Now all the sod farms grow it and supply has brought the price way down making it the least expensive choice for a lawn. Now they call it 'contractor grade' bermuda, but it is an excellent turf. The biggest advantage of Tif 419 and the UC Verde variety of buffalo is that they do not develop seed stalks and seed heads. It is the stalks and seed heads which make the wild varieties of bermuda and buff look shaggy and even weedy after 5 days. Here is a picture of a hybrid buffalo grass which still gets seed heads. You can tell this is a hybrid buffalo by the short length of the seed stalks. Wild buffalo grass sends the stalks much higher than the actual grass, which makes it unsightly very quickly. Hybrid bermuda grass is commonly used on golf greens in the West, so it is a tough grass. Here is a picture of that same hybrid buffalo mowed at golf green height. You can see it is very dense in the full sun and looks nice mowed down low. The only problem with keeping it low is you have to mow several times a week due to the fast growth. That's true of both bermuda and buffalo. Is any of this helpful, or am I repeating stuff you've read before?

Just get one sofa. And you may be able to add one more streamlined chair. Or just keep a folding chair or two on hand for extra company. You don’t want to crowd the space. And plus you are a minimalist. I basically am too, so I personally understand the sensibility. And you definitely don’t want to block your beautiful balcony and views. I just took a closer look at your space and balcony. Your plants are beautiful. My BF also had a bunch of plants in his apartment and on his balcony; and as I just looked at your balcony I have to say your balcony looks so much like his! And it even looks like the same view! This is wild... He lived at 3201 Overland Ave. ( just to give you an idea of the proximity. Don’t say where you actually live! I understand! But I have to tell you this is wild for me, as I just looked closer at your place... It was a really beautiful area and looks like it is still so. I spent a lot of time there, when I lived in Los Angeles. Btw, I found some nice, comfortable folding chairs on Amazon recently - I’ll find them and post the info here for you. As I mentioned, they are nice to have on hand for extra company and easy to tuck away when not needed. ETA: This is the folding chair and it’s available in several colors. If you haven't been to LA since the 70's, the Farmers Market area is going to look SO different to you. They just built, in the last year or so, a huge shopping area attached to the market. So expect LOTS of crowds.

3rd Street is a good choice, as is Montana Ave ($$)in Santa Monica, or Melrose for some more shopping. If you will be here over a weekend, there are lots of flea markets in the area. Pasadena is a good city to check out- and if its the right Sunday of the month, you can hit the Rose Bowl flea market.

I know you said you had been to the Chinese Theater, but they just built the new Kodak Theater on Hollywood Blvd, along with a shopping center. Its still a nightmare on Hollywood BLVD, but for a quick touristy stop, it might be ok.

As for clubs, can't help you there too much, because what "was" hip last month is probably out by now:) But expect to pay around $10-$20 cover charge on the weekends for the good places.

Again, I would recommend against the taxi route. LA is just not a city designed for people without cars. You will have to call for a taxi every time you want one, and that will take a while to arrive, and then there is the cost. Traffic here is horrible, so the price for a taxi just goes up and up and up.
