European Honeymoon

My fiance and I would like to go to Western Europe for our honeymoon. We are on a budget and would like to see the usual sites, but also be able to go at our own pace and go to some places that are off the beaten path. We were actually thinking of renting a car and going from place to place, but we have never been to Europe so we do not know how much this would cost or where to stay.

You need to get ahold of some travel books and start researching. I happen to love Rick Steeves' _Europe through the Back Door_, but there are any number of others.

Also, once you have a general idea of where you want to go, the usenet group rec.travel.europe is really active and has a whole lot of knowledgeable people.

My one tip - plan on doing a *lot* less than you think you have time for. Oh, a second tip - pack lightly! A medium-small piece on wheels is plenty for a trip of whatever length.

Thank you for all your responses! My first post didn't go into great detail to keep it from being too lengthy. DD and her boyfriend have talked previously about engagement rings, and he showed her his grandmother's engagement ring, which he inherited. He said he would love to give the ring to his future wife some day, as he has wonderful memories of his grandmother, but was perfectly happy to buy a new ring if it wasn't suitable. DD told me it's a beautiful platinum band with intricate carving, but he had taken the stone (sapphire) out a few years before he met DD, and had it set in a pendant for his mother, because that is her birthstone. So DD's boyfriend already knows she loves the band and that she would want a diamond for the stone. He also knows she would absolutely love the Mediterranean cruise because she would be ecstactic to see all the historical sites she studied about for so many years. Some of you suggested a compromise with a two week cruise. Unfortunately, the 2 week cruises have a different itinerary and won't visit those 3 places she would love to see most. So he's really just debating whether to go for a larger stone now and the big cruise in the future, or the other way around. After reading your responses, I think I will suggest he propose with the ring as is and ask DD her preference after the proposal. Either way, he's an amazing young man and we can't wait to formally claim his as 'family.' I'll let you know how it turns out.

Back when your mother was selling was at least 20 years ago. There wasn't anyway to buy things online. You went to a store or you looked at ads in a newspaper. Now you can find anything online anytime. You also were limited to your area. Now you can shop world wide. That has reduced the prices. Twenty years of everyone's parents passing and now Baby Boomers are going also. The market is flooded with everything you have. There are no less that 15 estate sales running this week in my area alone. They will have the same amount every week. They all have the same things you have. When you add in the fact, like others have said, that a large part of the younger people no longer want stuff, the price has hit rock bottom. The plates in your first picture that are priced $4, you would be lucky to get 25 cents. If you enjoy having the sales, by all means keep on doing them. The professional estate sale companies here price everything and it is full price the first day, 25% off the 2nd day, and 50% off the 3rd day. After that it goes to a charity or the dumpster. I am not saying that you don't have nice or pretty things, because you do. They just don't sell anymore. Pink depression glass that was $50 in the 90's won't even sell for $5 now. If you look on E-Bay for current prices, be sure to go to the side and check the box that you want to look at sold listings.

I am about halfway through A Legacy of Spies by John Le Carre and am enjoying it more than the last several of his books. It's good to be back to the old days with George Smiley. In the mail today, I received a copy of the Bas Bleu book catalog. Besides a couple of books I would like, there is a page-a-day calendar with Unforgettable Senior Moments quotes such as "At 88, how do you feel when getting up in the morning?" Answer: "Amazed!" and a book tote that reads "There are a million books that I haven't read, but just you wait!"

The difference in temps is negligible for hardy plants in my opinion. For lower growing woody plants if they are buried their roots are safe and they are much less likely to see damage from air temps, winter sun and dry desiccating winter winds. I've certainly had conifers have lustrous green needles half way up the plant then transition to brown on the top half with the latter being exposed above the snow line. In addition many plants will regenerate growth from the roots. Smives eluded to this earlier in the post (at least its my interpretation of why he posted it). If you have such extreme temps early or late in the winter your cutting off the plants ability to uptake moisture through the roots so early in the season or so late when its desperately looking to replenish. Hence why snow cover is our best friend. Winter winds and sun are usually more damaging than solitary extreme temps if you have a long duration of frozen soil. If we don't see any more extremes and the soil starts to thaw in March I don't expect anything but minor twig and bud damage. Although I haven't had gardening experience with these solitary extremes like this year (-23, -24 and -26).

I second Italy its one of my favorite places in Europe!

In my opinion, its not really worth driving between major cities and tourist sports as public transportation is terrific and trains are terribly romantic. Country side, whole other story! Check out this site www.gotoday.com, they always have awesome deals on European trips.

From personal experience, take it easy on your first trip, especially since itÂs your honeymoon. But without a doubt pick up a bunch of travel books Rick Steves is great, Lonely Planet, Frommers guides, etc and read up on where you MIGHT want to go, then make a list. Also check out http://www.eurotrip.com/ for more info from other travelers on a budget.

Going to europe does not have to cost a lot! Good luck, I'm sure you're honeymoon will be wonderful!

My advice would be to avoid doing the typical 'Europe in 10 days' kind of thing. I recommend choosing an area and getting a taste for it. If you go to Italy you can spend time in a bigger city, then rent a car to explore smaller villages, vineyards (winetasting!!!), etc. In Germany or Switzerland a car rental would be unneccesary, and perhaps even a burden. Public transportation is frequent, clean, and reasonably priced. In France, you could go with the same idea as Italy - in Paris no need for a car, but if you want to explore other areas you may need one.

I agree with Michelle. Stay in one - or, at the very most two - places and really explore. Much more relaxed, and you'll actually get to know a place more than just by its most famous landmarks.

Florence .... it's fabulous. Don't need to drive. Many things to see, places to eat, places to shop. I've been throughout Italy. If this is your first taste of Europe, I think Florence will give you the history as well as contemporary Italy. Of course, there's always Paris for a honeymoon;)

I honeymooned in Rome and it was also my first trip to Europe. While it is an absolute gorgeous place to honeymoon (italy is awesome), the first trip to Europe can be very chaotic (culture shock), so definitely try not to pack too much in. Italy is a good choice because people are so friendly there, the food is awesome. Consider Sorrento or somewhere else on the Amalfi Coast (breath-taking!)

I vote for Italy for a honeymoon. There are all kinds of places to stay that are fun and different. Florence is an excellent choice. The Italians are wonderful people. Very american friendly. One shop we went in to just after 9-11 wanted us to sing America the Beautiful with them and gave us little gifts. The food is so good you will find it hard to choose what to try next. You have to eat the gelato. You have never tasted such a treat. You will never be satisfied with ice cream as we know it again.
San Gimignano is a good day trip from Florence if you rent a car. It is beautiful.
One thing to remember is that in Italy if you go into a bar or a market etc. You decide what you want and pay for it first.

Personally I find most places in Italy too touristy, but still worth checking out - particularly on honeymoon.

I have attached a link to some cheap accomodations in southern Germany. This is actually where I am from and whenever I go back I'll get an apartment there. You'll find it is a lot cheaper than going with a hotel - usually you get a one or two bedroom apartment with bathroom and kitchen. No roomservice, though. However, you get to shop and cook at home - and it is quite cheap. This place is only 40 min from the Austrian border, so you could make this your main stay and adventure from there. At least that is what I always do.

I definitely would recommend a car. You don't want to be stuck in big cities only, but rather explore the countryside. If you are dependent on public transportation - it is possible - but, definitely not convenient and or enjoyable. You want to stay flexible.
