Cape Cod

I have an opportunity to use a cottage on the beach in Provicetown any time I would like. I have never been to the East Coast and am wondering what is a goodtime, weatherwise, to go.

Someone suggested late May...

any other thoughts on a good time to go.

Late May or just after Labor Day. This is either prior to or after the height of the tourist/summer season. This would give you more time and space to enjoy the ocean, restaurants, etc. Otherwise, you will find the Cape can get pretty congested with traffic and people. At those times, most of the shops, restaurants, etc. are open. Some, not as many as before, close for the season so going close to either end of the summer season will allow you to take advantage of what Provincetown has to offer without the crowds. You will probably need a car, and maybe want to see the other parts of Cape Cod as well. I prefer going to the Cape on the off-season - even into October. But, this would be a colder time for you. At least in mid-September or late May you will probably have some relatively warmer days for the beach.

Thanks for your reply. We have decided that we are going June 8 for that week. My friend owns 14 cottages and 6 houses so having a place to stay is not a problem We won't need a car either.
We are so flexible about the whole trip.
We aren't interested in beach time....we just want to relax, sit on the deck and drink coffee and "play tourist"
Should be a fun trip.
Have you ever taken Cape Air from Boston over??? Am wondering just how small those planes are.....We may do that instead of the ferry.

We are building something similar to this photo that JDS posted. We refer to it as our cottage but have also referred to it as a cape cod style. I found it fascinating and informing to learn what makes a true cape above. I do not love new construction and it was never our original plan to build but things don't always go the way you plan. I tried to stick with a classic design that looks like the house could have been there for years while also fitting in with the area that we are building and this style fit the bill, I just love the simplicity. Our house is 1498 sf. It's a second home in a wonderful little vacation neighborhood just steps away from the shores of Lake Erie. We haven't broken ground yet as we are still in the approval process with the association of the neighborhood but I'm really excited about it!

I've done it in several different ways. The simplest is to replace the second floor joists with shallower LVL joists but that might only raise the ceiling a few inches. Its possible to raise the second floor joists a foot or two if the rafters are large enough or sistered with new rafters. This requires design drawings by a design professional. Raising the roof and second floor is not practical since it requires adding taller exterior wall studs (they can't be spliced). Here is where a possible zoning height limit might apply. Another way is to replace the second floor joists with beams at 4ft o.c. and adding new floor joists above the beams. This might get the ceiling to 8 ft and only reduce the available second floor space by a foot on each side of the house.. To remove the second floor and create a cathedral ceiling would require adding a ridge beam with posts at each end of it, To be able to say more would require a photo and drawings of the house especially a section showing the structure.

depends on what you want. place kitchen over on the right ....at the rear of living room...place a dining zone near fireplace and rest of that big room add some living room furniture. Turn the existing kitchen into an entry vestibule but give a foot or so back to the "dining room " so it can be a parlor or small living room if you want. if you remove the walk through kitchen that you now have maybe the half bath could be renovated and get a shower stall so the study can be an ensuite bedroom someday. a table or banquette along with kitchen on the right side . but not sure what you really want to do....the existing kitchen w walkway down the middle is like a closet or mudroom / very constrained ....you have spaces but what scope of reconfiguring things has your interest?

I would not want to define anything on the ceiling. White paint hides more blemishes in a surface than color. Flat, rather than eggshell or satin. Paint the lower portion whatever color you want, but paint the wooden rail the same color, not contrasting. Actually, the base trim and the new wall color would be nice all the same, not bright white to draw attention next to the wooden floor. I would paint the flat of the actual ceiling and the sloped walls to make it all ceiling, especially when the ceiling isn't that tall anyway. If you need a fan, replace it with a ceiling hugging white fan so it disappears into the ceiling (and a solid light cover, those outdated fans are just that, out dated.

I assume you are taking Cape Air from Logan Airport to the Cape? Does Ptown have an airport? Anyway, there is always a line at Logan for Cape Air. Not sure how small/large those planes are but they are constantly in use..if that helps.
