Thanks for taking JT on a trip to such a historical spot, I'm sure she was proud to be an American & get to have her pic taken there!! Shame they don't have anyone who can repair the pillar but I suppose then it would get stolen. I remember how important it was reading about the Mason -Dixon line in school! Why don't you just ask the folks that live there if they have to pay taxes in 2 states? I don't think they would mind!(unless a million other people asked them but probably not as most people don't think about things much on vacation- just getting on to next spot or where they are going to eat. I'm 1 of those that want to take it all in & ask questions & don't care if I eat!! You wouldn't want me around those farms, I'd want to check them out & doubt they are listed as tourist attractions!!! Again, for those who might be going up to Mendo, we can heartily recommend the B&B we stayed at. The Agate Cove Inn is located on Lansing Rd., right by the ocean, about 1 mile just north of the town of Mendocino. It was far and away the best place we stayed during our long trip! They are duplex cabins, all with patios, full baths with jetted tubs, comfortable beds, nice little breakfast in the morning, extremely quiet and peaceful. We stayed in Zircon but really liked all of them - we were the only ones staying on a Sunday so hosts Roger and Lorraine gave us their master key so we could go into all the cottages to check them out. Emerald and Obsidian are the biggest and most luxe; Garnet has an extra twin bed for those who are traveling with a small child. As mentioned above, all of them have gas-fired stoves or fireplaces for heat, very easy to work (unlike some we've encountered) and the cabins are extremely well insulated and toasty-warm. The view from their front lawn, where they have two separate patios with lots of lawn furniture, is stunning. Bundle up, though, weather can be wildly changeable up there. The winds can be icy-cold one hour then warm up again the next! We made good use of Agate's blankets when sitting outside, even though we were all bundled up in Polarfleece, gloves, and hats, LOL. I can't say for certain but I'm reasonably sure that there was a Will and such. Passing control to others isn't an issue. As said there were a number of managers capable of running it. And it did continue. They had roped off the table the owner used to sit at all the time as a "memorial" to him. His loss brought in a lot of people actually from what I understand. However, it's been around a year since closing. Sure it's possible it's tied up in probate but I know the attorney he used and I have every confidence it wouldn't be prevented from staying open for that reason. Could it reopen? Well, technically, yes, but when a grill/bar is closed this long, it's a huge challenge to return to the business it was. People find other hangouts. Simple as that. My guess is it's gone for good by now. I have an affection for the small business community. It's what built this country. It's what built the big businesses. I really hate seeing a business die like this. The community is a big loser. Schools are losing a lot of support. People lost their jobs. State loses tax revenue and so on. There's a lot of impact from the loss of a small business.
