Dominican Republic

I didn't get any responses on my note for Punta Cana. So, I'm now trying for Dominican Republic. Has anyone been there? What should we know, make sure we do, make sure we watch out for? Thanks.

I spent my Honeymoon in the DR, in 1988. Stayed at the Jack Tarr Village in Puerta Plata. I don't think it is a Jack Tarr anymore. It's been so long that I'm not sure anything I remember would be relevant, but I'll try. The resort area around Puerta Plata was nice, everything in the town was very 3rd world. We took a bus ride from the resort to SoSua(sp) beach, which was real nice. I remember that my money went a long way once we were off the resort. The resort was all inclusive but we still got tired of the food. The resort reccomended a resteraunt in another area, they charged $7 for a lobster dinner. It was great.

If I was going again, I would make sure the resort offered transportation from and to the airport. I would make friends with other people and travel in large groups. I would talk to the people at the resort about what is safe and what isn't.

Just about every answer to just about any question about the DR can be found at the site below. When are you planning on going? Punta Cana is wonderful, great resorts abound it is just a question of finding the perfect one for YOU!

C thanks. I looked at the link but that image of the scotch bonnet tehre looks more like an habanero than a bonnet! anyway there is a lady at the union sq farmers mk on weds and sats that sells heirlooms for $3 each. I got those. And yesterday I found 4 starter plants Scotch Bonnets on Nostrand ave close to ave D and Newkirk ave for $2. The Jamaican Scotch Bonnets seeds have not srpouted yet but thoes I got from the Haitian vendor that said were from Haiti sproted in 2 days. Those were mostly red and greens. Off the J train there are a lot of Mexican stores with Mexican chilies. The Wst Indian markets in Flatbush have a lot of Chinense types but they are just usually marked as Hot Peppers. The ones from Jamaica and Haiti were really hotter, I could feel it just by opening them. Anyway will see what comes. I am near teh L train Montrose stop, Graham ave. Where are you? I am planning to overwinter plants under lights. I do not really have a yard so it is windowsill growing,although I was considering of putting a crate on the roof with some plants in it. maybe. But I live in an apt building so maybe the landlord would not let.

My medical here in the D.R. little over $1,000 Canadian per year. If I went to the hospital it's free. The clinics are more up to date than the hospitals. There is a doctor in the local hospital who will stop by if I give him a call for help with no charge and sometimes he brings the medicine I need free as well. The medical insurance doesn't pay 100%. If you know what you need in medicine you can go to the drug store here and buy it over the counter. There is even truck in the road that sell everything and they carry antibiotic and pain killers like ibuprofen 800mg

your queen palm is a Roystonea I think. Your two unidentified palms are PseudophoenixÃ¢ÂÂ¦ first one is probably sargentii, but can't tell what the others areÃ¢ÂÂ¦ could also be sargentii, but could be vinifera, too.

Built in panel ready Refrigerator

There is a difference between a built in refrigerator and one that accepts panels although a built in refrigerator can be panel ready. As others have posted, if you can't find a cabinet maker who is familiar with the process, I would advise you to give up and purchase a nice looking regular refrigerator. Alternatively you can google on youtube for instructions and see if any of the skilled cabinetmakers in your area feel comfortable with attempting it. I just finished a remodel and have a paneled refrigerator which is NOT a built in. It is counter depth so the sides protrude slightly but my cabinetmaker clad those sides with matching wood and of course the end panel is fully paneled. I also extended the depth of my lower cabinets slightly so that it minimizes the amount the counter depth protrudes. What appliance brands are available in the Dominican Republic. As others have posted, to have a brand of appliance which is unable to be serviced is not a great idea. My paneled refrigerator is by Kitchenaid and I also considered a Jennair that was similar. The paneled version of this refrigerator is not more costly than the stainless version but of course the cost of having the wood panel fabricated and installed drives up the final cost.

We went someplace near Romana called Casa de Campo (or something like that). The food was great. The facilities were nice. There was horseback for the kids (and husband). We even went into Romana for dinner a couple of times and had a great time. It was definitely a great place to go.

My sister has gone 2x & loves the all inclusive style resort & the food BUT do not go off the property. I hear it's very dangerous!
