Suddenly Stepmom

This sounds like a soap opera I still can't believe it sometimes. I met my husband six years ago. We have been married for three years. We were both young, single and had no children. We liked all of the same activites, and agreed on what we wanted out of our marriage. One thing we agreed on was no children. It's not that we don't like kids, because we do, but we are career driven people who like to do things on a whim. We travel often, and enjoy adult activies. That all changed last month.

My husband had just gotten out of a long relationship with a unstable woman when I had met him. He told me that she just up and left one evening, giving no explanation. Last month, she came back. Only this time, she came back with twins. A boy and a girl, seven years old. She claimed they were my husbands kids. We did not beleive her at first. Why would she not tell my husband he was a father? What kind of sick woman is she? Long story short, we had a paternity test done, and, they are his children. She told us that she can no longer care for them, and basically dropped them at our door step. My husband and I took them in, expecting her to come back. It doesn't look like she is going to.

These kids have been through alot. They have told us stories about how they were treated by their mother. She had told them horrible things about my husband. And now, they were dumped like trash by the only parent they have ever known. They have alot of anger issues. They are violent with each other, and at school. We have them in therapy. The therapist suggests that the damage has been done, and all we can do is hope for the best. My husband and I have considered going into therapy as well.

Neither of us wanted children. Not only do we now have children, but we have disturbed, violent ones. The therapist recommended that the children have the most normal family enviroment as possible. So, I quit a career that took me years to have success. I'm now a housewife. My husband wants me to go back to work, but I feel like I can't win. If I go back to work, the kids suffer. If I stay home, I suffer. I just don't know if I am up for the job. Last week, my stepson punched me in the mouth, and reminded me that I am not his mother. He cracked my front tooth and split my lip. That is my final straw. Does anyone have any suggestions. I love my husband, but I don't know if I can handle this.
