Creative Home Arts Club

Does anybody knows about the Creative Home Arts Club, They send me a letter offering a lot of stuff for only one dollar per month, I am not really a craft person I just get stuff from the dumpster and curb and make them beautiful and usable again with glue, paint and tools.

Don't bother. I got sucked in, and their stuff is pure junk. The magazine is 75% ads, and what "projects" there are look like they were designed by a kindergarten class. There are no "creative home arts" visible anywhere IMO.

You are already being creative by repurposing found objects, and find much more satisfaction than you would by assembling purchased kits into something not useful at all.

Sorry to sound so harsh, but I am still PO'd at the chasm between hype and reality.

I have to agree with Nancy. I was dismally disappointed by them too. You are able to get "free" craft kits but, I can't remember exactly why, but they weren't really free. It might have been, the kit is free but shipping and handling is $50 or you became a member with an obligation to purchase future kits or supplies. You'd get more inspiration on this forum or others than you'd get in their magazine. Plus you get lots of mail from them trying to get you to become a "lifetime member." I think it was something ridiculously high like $400 but you got a bunch of free things that would probably equal about $100. Definitely not worth it in my opinion.

Cute house. Is that a baby on the lawn next to the driveway? LOL. I'm not a professional landscaper, but here's my advice from a first time homebuyers perspective who learned the hard way: Lots of great advice here...I agree with starting with soil amendment, then trees, shrubs, perennials / garden in that order, and wait a year before delving into major changes unless you have a pro landscaper. Keep in mind seasonal interest, evergreens and deciduous. Do you want privacy? You can place trees to block views. Do you want a place to entertain and relax? If so, then you can consider a patio in your landscaping scheme. I also perused my neighborhood for similar homes to get a better idea of my likes vs. dislikes, and expanded on that, and I've spent winter months perusing the web, garden books and magazines for a wealth of information. Usually when I did something on a whim, I later regretted it. I have a neighbor who took a beautiful lilac shrub, hacked it down to the ground at 10:00 pm, the night before she threw a party, to "make more room for seating". We couldn't believe it (as this was the last shrub in their yard). I also have a lilac shrub that I later trimmed up into a tree form to make room for a rocking chair underneath, and it's adorable, very English-gardenish, my husband's favorite place to relax...so the moral of the story is my neighbor has regrets, I'm sure, as she later replanted another shrub in the same place. LOL. As far as your veggie gardens, some municipalities don't allow veggie gardens at the front of your home, so it's always best to check on municipal codes. Consider installing a rain barrel. Our community sells them dirt cheap as a recycling program (old pickle barrels), as opposed to the pricing you see on the internet. Your plants will love you for it, and you'll save on your water bill. Our local dump provides free compost and mulch if you pick it up and load yourself. I always check on gardenweb regarding plant selections, and I've always found this most reliable vs. zone hardiness or performance from garden magazines or nurseries. Gardenweb -trees, perennial forums, etc. are a plethora of valuable information, couldn't live without. Fence - get a property survey if no property markers on site. Check with city hall to see if they have any on record. Inform your adjoining neighbors before installing, as a courtesy, they'll appreciate it, and you can also make sure there are no property line disputes. Confirm municipal codes regarding height, permit requirements, material, etc. I wouldn't skimp on the quality as this will add value to your home, and appeal to future homebuyers with kids and pets. I noticed your access to the back yard is via the side door - think about whether you want your fenced area to encompass the back door as well, technically this area is considered the "side yard" and not the "back yard", in which there may be different height or permit requirements, so again, my best advice is to confirm municipal code (our municipality is very strict). As far as visual sensations, curb appeal increases the value of your home. Bricks - I would not get rid of them if they match the brick on your home. Depending on the year your home was built, you'd be hard pressed to ever find them again, and you never know when you might need them. You could use them as a pillar base for a pergola, for example, and it would look like it was original to the home. Just some things to think about. That's my 2 cents worth. Good luck, and most of all have fun. I knew absolutely nothing about gardening or landscaping, and now I'm hooked. I find gardening very therapeutic. Regards, Kim

Garden Club Garden Art Fair

Sure kp, can post some info for you....This is the fourth year for our newly formed garden club. We have one fundraiser per year and it is the Garden Art Fair & Bake Sale. We have about 30 members. All are asked (not required) to make garden art or something related to gardening or baked goods and donate it to the club. We rent a school gym, set up tables, advertise for about a month and then sell everything that was donated. Last year, in about three hours, we brought in $1,300!. We do have unusual house plants and some garden plants, but we try and stay away from too much of that, as we want to be know for our garden art. We also do not wish to run into competition with our garden centers because they usually have their open houses the same weekend. It is a great fundraiser plus it keeps the members busy all year searching for new ideas and creating their art. It is so much fun to see what members come up with. Some of the things we sell: We have totems, silverware windchimes, mosaic work, stepping stones, garden aprons, bird feeders, hypertufa pots & mini gardens, birdhouses, butterfly houses, garden signs, garden baskets, decorated garden chairs, watering cans, garden books, plate flowers, garden crosses, a willow trellis, homemade jams & jellies (red hot pepper jelly, onion jelly, raspberry jam, homemade salsa, and many others. I will take pictures this year and post them if anyone is interested. No, we don't have other vendors, as this is our fundraiser. Past years, we have also hosted workshops every hour, on the hour, but the last few years, they have been less and less. Everyone who comes just wants to buy, so this year we aren't offering anything extra. It is great exposure for our club too. Many people come in and ask questions about gardening. We even pick up new members when they come to visit us. And I think our own members are our best customers! BUT we aren't allowed to buy anything until we open up the doors for the public. Becky

My suggestion for you is not to Open the book at all, not even the packing it comes in. Write in big bold letters, RETURN TO SENDER! I'd also call or write and ask them to stop sending you the books..I found out the hard way about weight watcher books that come from Oxmoor House and are twice the price they are in the book stores. I only buy online from Amazon.com..They beat everybody's prices that I have discovered so far. Delivery is fast too.

I'm a member. And I'm not crazy about it. I've never once got to try a product. You get a monthly magazine, but I haven't seen much that I like there either. Keep getting e-mails from them wanting me to get their Visa card. I was getting their books to view, but I put a stop to it. If you open them and you didn't want them you had to pay to send them back. And the books weren't cheap. The first one was, then the others where at regular price. I use to belong to a "garden club" like this one and it's the same thing.

Angie If you are the least bit creative you don't need this club. I felt it was a rip-off. And I'm glad you asked before sending $. Paula

Since I discovered the garden forum about two years ago, my changed for the best, I live in a city where expensive cars, nice restaurants and mall shopping are the most important things, I live in a small area that the city purchased few years ago and the minority live, I have to share this with you because I paint and fix my apartment myself, I do my gardening, grow bananas, tomatoes, my children also love to grow their own. as soon they come from school they run to the back yard,People here do not take care their homes and apartments, they don't even have to cook, there is habitat for humanity and the city to do all the work,so everybody believes that I am crazy because whenever a rich person give a resident a good piece of furniture I ask the maintenance guy to open the dumpster for me. The begining of the story is I just signed the lease for my 600sq ft storefront, I have 800 sq ft storage, even a brand-new cash register that somebody did not use for his business fell in my hand, mannequins, racks, displays case when Norstroms and Macys were renovating, one time I have to call a worker at the mall to watch the door of the compactor while I was inside grabbing a tailor manequin I have perfumes, Books, garden, flowers, collectibles, brand-new clothes, shoes and more. There is a very knowledgeble person from the garden forum that I want to thanks, watergal I am running my interior plants service and I am very happy and relaxed, I did my website with the help of my children is angieinteriorplants.com, my store will be angie's The Resale Diva, I just registered the name with the state, I still need more money for the next two month's expense, I also expect to take consigment, I really I have thank you all of you for your proyects, I am learning a lot, by the way I curb-shopped a very old and big mirror, I scraped the gold film in the back, glue pictures of myself, painted the frame and you can see the pictures and the reflection, Four people were bidding on it, starting a 150.00, Maybe I will keep it, I am sorry it is long but this is the begining of my new life and I have to tell, it means a lot to me, finally I will be making money and doing something that I enjoy at the same time.
Thank you
