Checking in with a renovation update

Well, there's hope we might actually finish this renovation someday after all. It's been much longer road than we expected, but I now know that optimistic doesn't begin to describe how we approached this. Delusional would be more appropriate.

We got an original date of November 6 for a finish date on the big stuff from our contractor. On November 10 I asked when he was going to be finished and got really mad when he said we had a ways to go but he thought we were doing good on the schedule. I think that's when I realized it was out of my control and to stop stressing about it.

We're down to the last bits now, I'm happy to say. The skirting on the decking will go on either tomorrow or next week, the vanity is to be installed tomorrow, the toilet is in (YAY! For the first time in more than eight years I live in a house with two toilets and there's no words to describe that kind of joy), and we can move back up to the bedroom as soon as I finish touching up the paint and we mentally work ourselves up to dragging all the stuff back up there.

There are some finishing things that will be awhile yet. The glass enclosure for the shower MIGHT show up before New Year's but it's sort of doubtful. The vanity counter probably will be after the first of the year. We've not even started on the built-ins for the bedroom, but the guy building those would probably rather wait until after Christmas anyway.

God only knows when the painting will be finished. When I decided to take on the majority of painting myself (after seeing the quote for it) I had no idea what I was getting into. I'm thoroughly burned out on it so a lot of things are dragging. I've not even started the staircase and that's goign to be a big project.

All the paneling is up in the hallway. It's been painted since this (we spliced together the old paneling and some new pieces, so the old stuff was painted a light gray and the new stuff is the new darker gray color)

Wow! It looks great. I got tickled at your joy of having two working toilets in the house. I remember that feeling, especially of being able to walk just a few feet at night instead of down a dark hall. lol

Ok, so I worked on some bubble diagrams for some of the new areas last night. As you look at the picture of the house, you'll see there are several cone shaped shrubs next to the foundation of the house. Some have boxy yews in between them, some don't. I am getting rid of all the boxy yews and replacing them with flowers. THose are the box diagrams I worked on last night. Those gardens will have delphinums, foxgloves, platycodon, phlox, catanache caerulea alba, cransebill geraniums, and campanula. Also, the one in front of the garage is larger, so that one will also have a Rose (probably 'Peace' variety). So I've got those all planned. But here's my dillema. Or actually, I have several dilemmas that I need input on. 1) Since those gardens are mostly blues/purples/whites/pinks will they look ok with my burgandy shutters? I would love to change the color of the shutters, but my roof is red, so I really can't. And I tend to pick flowers in those color families because I don't really care for reds. I do pick yellows too though. Just not in those foundation gardens. 2) As you look at the front you will see there are the three areas next to the foundation. The sidwalk goes alongside two of them and ends at the third. I plan to continue the pathway along the remaining front and wind it around to the back in the Northeast corner of the house. I'm planning on using flagstone to make the pathway. That leaves two large bump out areas in the front with a narrow strip along the sidewalk connecting the two. The narrow strip will probably contain angelonias. What should I do with the bump outs? I want to make sure they look good from the road and from the side walk. I'm going to have a dogwood planted in the bump out in front of the garage and as you can see in the pics, i just planted a multistem crab apple in the other bump out. I'm also thinking of putting a mountain laurel in each of the bump outs, but from there, I can't decide. I also want to make sure that they don't block the foundation gardens from view completely although with the tall flowers I've selected that should be fairly easy to accomplish. 3) As you go around the NE corner of the house following the pathway I'm going to put in there are more shrubs. I'm going to remove those and I am thinking of putting in some sort of large perennial like Nepeta Six Hills Giant or a larger lavendar or something. Not sure though. I've also got a lilac there that's small right now, but as we all know will grow and get larger. Should I put anything else in there or just keep it minimal? 4) If you look at the photo titled NW gardens around pool aerial view...I have started a peastone pathway which will go all the way out to the grass. Also, coming from the front of the house will be a flagstone pathway that will follow the line of the house until the deck then follow the curve of the garden and go around the pool (I think?). I can't figure out how to merge the two pathways where they come together? 5) Any other suggestions for other areas would also be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Tara

I have been renovating since December through June... does that count? My kitchen had a horrible layout. Exterior door to deck (to right of the stove) breaking up counter space. Fridge against a load bearing wall that will come down. Sink and dishwasher will also move. Who wants to look in a mirror while at the sink? Also had flourescent lights in the kitchen. Ugh. Demo load bearing wall, replace with LVL beam. Note the location of the two double-hung windows. Patio door going in where those are. And on the other side, a double hung window to replace the old exerior door. The kitchen sink will be relocated under this window. Also exposed the wall where the plumbing lived, demo'd the soffits. Had to move part of the vent stack as they hid it in the soffits. Plumbing roughed in. Can't see it here but I had the entire ceiling re-hung, taped and mudded. It was old popcorn ceiling that needed to go. Also had ceiling and wall electric roughed in and then had the same guy hang, tape and mud these walls. Drywall is one of those things I will always sub out. After I painted the walls I was free to continue the hardwood floor install. Then the electrician came back and we turned on the recessed lights. And then yesterday the cabinets went up! Undercabinet lighting and in cabinet lighting (on those uppers where glass will be) still to come. Still deciding on the countertop. Any suggestions? Toe kick and matching crown molding have not been installed yet. Microwave going up this weekend. Have to change the swing on the fridge doors. Have to order and install island cabinets and then hang up sink and island pendant lights. And decide / install backsplash. Also need to extend the deck so that I don't fall to earth after going through the patio doors. This kitchen is on the 2nd floor. (What is CRAZY is how much my kitchen is starting to look like inkycrab's (above)). Inkycrab's kitchen: Identical layout and I have the same size island coming...

Whoaaaaaa, that is looking really really REALLY nice!!
I absolutely LOVE your blue door. Never saw one shaped like that. It is a fairy tale house. You have done wonderful things with your plans, and I had rather have a contractor take his time to get things RIGHT than one who hurries and covers up a multitude of sins.

About the shower enclosure, I'd just as soon that GLASS objects came after the big Christmas rush, since that might lead to delivery carelessness and some breakage. What a pain that would be.

Ellen, you are doing great. And I know exactly what you mean about having TWO HEADS in your house. I am a convert to having two crappers in every house.

I love every thing you've chosen, you have great taste. The door is soo charming with the rest of the entrance. I can't wait to see the rest. I love the curved stairs too, will you stain them with a nice acid stain to enhance them?

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. It was nice to read them today as we're in the midst of a mega-snafu with the vanity (which has been a headache from day one). The door is original to our 73-year-old house and it's always been one of my favorite features. Before we added the gable it was sort of glossed over, even with the bright paint color (imagine what that was like when it was brown or hunter green, the colors I found when I was stripping it).

The front curved stairs are also original. They go down onto a patio (cement with little stones embedded ... I don't know if there's a name for that) so the natural cement color will stay, at least for now.

The paneled walls were also original and something we insisted come back. Of course originally they were a natural cedar-type color, but a previous owner painted them (a good call except I'd like to hunt them down and torture them for not priming them first).

Moccasin, good call on the glass. With the debacle that is the vanity, undoubtedly something really bad could have happened in there today.

Oh and yes, that's one of our resident bears. Actually, Hudson's one of our two Newfoundland dogs.

I love your story-book house. Your choices in keeping the best features of the older home are perfect. And all those angles and boards that emphasize the unique nature of your house.....man alive, you are turning your Cinderella into a true Princess.

There is always light as you near the end of the tunnel....do not get too eager to be done. It might seem a good thing to have it over with, but have you thought what you will really DO if you no longer have a house project?

I really like what you have done to the shower and the gable over your front door really turned out perfect. Sorry about the vanity troubles. Hope they smooth out soon.
