Knowing how slimy the stone business is, I pessimistic guess is that they sold the slab (maybe unknowingly).

I would demand that my two slabs be returned (hope you signed the edges and a photo to shows the slabs).
Or they accidentally broke it!

Or maybe i am just cynical but there are far too many such stories of 'lost' slabs on this forum...

I have the granite pics on my phone so I can recognize the markings. One slab was there but I am just concerned that if they did sell the other of color difference between a new slab they would have to get for me. I didn't think of writing on it. They have 50% of the granite cost plus fabrication for my job. If I notice a difference when I finally get to see this slab they couldn't produce today or didn't offer to lead me to which was wierd then I would refuse to accept it and ask to choose another 2 slabs. It was just awkward and not what I was expecting after you pay for 1/2 of a job.

Get two new slabs. How it was explained to me at the granite yard is that the slabs are cut slices like a loaf of bread. These are ones in the same run. Not saying that you can't match up other pieces, but it could be difficult. You are at the beginning stage and should pick what you want, and what will match. As for mrking your slab, the salesman at the granite yeard did it right there in front of us. When we went back, we knew it was ours.

the selling of a slab already chosen and partially paid for has happened to others on here. I wouldn't believe what she told you at ALL!

Go back and demand to see that 2nd slab. if it IS there, mark it - and mark the first one also. If it isn't there, pick out new granite.

I think some of these people think that when it gets down to the wire of finishing your kitchen you'll take whatever they have for you... a number of these fabricators have tried to get away with non matching counter tops, bad seams - all kinds of weird things. very bad service!

I'd let them know right up front that you expect colors to match, movement to match etc and extremely fine seams (if needed), that you won't accept poorly fabricated counters.

You should also demand to be there for layout so you can ensure that they are slabs you want and do match. Most of the places I looked had id numbers on the slabs so you could more or less verify that you got the right slab. I didn't write down my numbers and really don't know whether I got the slab I meant to get.

Thank you to all for your responses. I am not sleeping at night just thinking about the whole kitchen and floor thing and that granite thing just put me over the edge. It was one of those times when I couldn't think or react because I just assumed 2 slabs would be together. I did look at the receipt from the granite yard and the numbers were on there. I should have written our name on it but didn't. I did have and hopefully they are not lying two slabs with nice not busy pattern that I liked. Now that that happened I will be more assertive and start demanding when I go there to template and it is not our slab. I will not accept what I didn't pick out if that turns out to be the case. That is an awful business practice if they ever did that. Thanks again.

Go back. Ask for the owner. Show him your phone shots to establish what you know and will accept. Have him show you your stone.

I had 3 and a half slabs on reserve from me-all from the same lot number which was designated on my contract. One of the slabs had the reversed side polished (I think that's called bookmarked) so seams could be matched on the long runs. Despite others wanting my slabs, they held all of them for over two months till I was ready. If your fabricator can't produce both slabs before templating, I'd get my deposit back and go elsewhere or it's likely to happen again. If granite was easily interchangeable, there would be no reason to reserve.

Sadly, this seems to be somewhat common. I think there was even a case where someone paid in full for their slabs and still had them sold out from under them. I agree with the others - either they provide you with 2 slabs that you're happy with or get your deposit back and go elsewhere.

i wouldn't wait til time to template them - I think that will cost you time if they don't have both. I'd want to know ASAP if that's the case.

Thank you all for your advice and listening. I did go back and ask that the slabs be brought out. After 2 days of hemming and hawing they did. They had one of my original slab and then an imposter. I said one is mine but you can see from the pictures I have that the other one is not mine. They had some Delicatus pieces next to the slabs and my son said look mom, that is yours, look at the markings. So they finally said a mistake had been made. Actually, she said another client liked yours and I said and with my deposit, money left on them you used my granite. They didn't tell me they did only until they were caught. It was wierd why I wanted to go check on the granite but I am glad I did. I asked for the money back and they said what can we do to make it right. Said not much you already gave my granite away and I don't like the slab you were going pass off as mine. I really didn't want to have anything to do with them at that point. Then when I took their check to their bank to cash it they told me got some bad news for you. I told him what happened and he said wait a few minutes. Finally came back and said at 2:56 she deposited to cover it. They didn't have $l800.00 in the bank on top of all of that. Went to another granite yard and got another fabricator that the girl said had an excellent reputation. So off to find two more great pieces of granite. Thanks for listening and the advice. When I picked up my granite 11 days ago, the yard had about 8 slabs of Delicatus White. I don't know how difficult it is to find, in general. This is at Arizona Tile in Ontario, California. Just thought I'd put that out there for you.

I just wanted to say thanks for listening last week. I was quite upset at not finding the granite I worked so hard to find not there. They did take the deposit to hold it and then sold it out from under me to make another customer happy. Must have been a job worth it. I got my deposit back but almost not because she just deposited when I was in the bank or else the bank called them and approved the check. Don't know, don't care. I never think of these things happening but I found out they do. Thanks again.

Wow...what a racket!!! I had no idea that the stone business was so crooked. I am sorry you didn't get your original pieces, but apparently it wasn't meant to be. I hope you find even more gorgeous pieces for your kitchen.

Actually the same thing happened to me last week.

I saw a slab I really loved at a stone yard. It was then put a hold. When I went to my fabricator a couple days later, the slab there wasn't the one I picked out. I went back to the stoneyard and they said the slab I picked was already on hold for someone else when I picked it.

I'm not sure I buy that because I have a piece of paper with the slab # on it saying I have it for the next 10 days. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything as beautiful so I settled for the next best.

Really there's nothing you can do, if they want to give away your slab for any reason they will. You could write your name on the slab if you wish and it wouldn't really stop them.
