Placement/positioning of mantle shelf

I need some help, never having had a fireplace before! This is a plain 1980's fireplace, which I hope to improve the look of a little. I'm not a big fan of the tile to start with, but I guess painting it might look worse.

It only has metal curtains now, which I am thinking of replacing with simple glass doors.

I have bought a mantle shelf and stained it dark. Sorry for the poor photo quality my camera broke so the new pics are taken with my cell phone, old pics are from PO.

Here is the fireplace and living room "before"

and here it is now (mantle shelf is sitting on the hearth)

Here is the shelf being held up to the wall my my DH

1. is this the right position- right above the tile, or should it go a bit higher?

2. I thought the dark stain would tie in with our furniture but now wondering if painting it white would have been better... but maybe it would have stood out too much from the wall and fireplace itself.

Any thoughts?
