a rant

I'm an adult step daughter. At our best, my stepmom and I are civil. Most of the time it seems like we take two steps forward and three steps back. She had done a lot of terrible things to me and I'm always expected to just forgive her. Everything has always been we are faaaaamily and we have to get along. Even when she has clearly a big dislike for me and will openly voice it.

Okay, I'm getting derailed from my original reason for posting. Her son, my stepbrother owes me a lot of money. I lent it to him so he could make his rent and not get kicked out. He didn't want me to say anything and would pay me back within 30 days.

Well, of course it has been 6 months and not a word from him. I call no answer and no return call. He doesn't come to family functions anymore and his mom says that he is at the beach or traveling each and every time.

In the meantime, she is telling me all that she and my father have done for him. The gift cards, the golfing vacations.....on and on and on. And this is the stepbrother that failed out of college after 2 years without receiving ONE credit. But, you know, he is still "special" and you can't have the bad step sister bringing up anything unpleasant. I know rationally that I shouldn't say anything to his mom or my dad, but at the same time I am so tired of seeing my dad give him chance after chance and he just stomps all over him. And I didn't come up with that money easily.

I'm so tired of it all. If I hadn't let him the money, then I'm the bad one again. If I say anything, I'm trying to stir up trouble. And yes, this may sound immature but after 18 years of this crap I'm tired. I'm tired of being the one having to compromise, I'm tired of the being the one to have to let my feelings be stomped on for the sake of the faaaaaamily. I'm tired of being around them and having to see and hear incessantly that these kids are "special." Yep, I get it she is insecure and feels the need to push my face into it. After 18 years of this blended family, when does it stop?
