What to do with trim??

At our local fabric store they have scraps of beautiful trim, and braided cording, usually 1 yard. They cost $1 and some are worth about $16 a yard. I can coordinate colors and can get matching trims but all are 1 yard. Any ideas, how to creatively trip a pillow or picture frame or anything. Thanks.

I'd be checking out my walls... if you have a poster, a fave print or whatever that you'd enjoy accenting... something that could stand to be bigger and have more "importance" in a room.... I'm thinking you might use the trim directly on the wall to build a frame around the item?

It could also be a pretty accent where the cieling and walls meet, if you don't have crown mouldings, or on the front edge of your kitchen cupboard shelves, or china hutch shelves, as an added POP.

Maybe trim a lampshade? or a lamp?

Maybe embellish existing bedding that could use a bit of pizzaz? Maybe sew on around a flat sheet to use as an inexpensive bedcover once hot weather arrives?

What about decorating towels for your bathroom. You could easily trim a couple of handtowels with a yard of trim. They would also make great shower/housewarming gifts. You could do the same with pillow cases. You could also decorate small shoe boxes with fancy paper and trim to match your decor. How about trimming out a small photo album or sewing the trim onto the valance/curtains/shower curtain that you are already using? The possiblities are endless. Buy a bunch!

Johnson Flooring Co Inc, So far, it seems like the easiest solution would be what you said: undercut the side where the floor is high. There's about 10 feet of the trim to the right of this transition, so I'd be undercutting that much trim, which would be obvious when comparing the two rooms, but there will be a large shelf against the wall, covering almost all this trim. I don't like the idea of shimming the carpet; that may be too obvious to tolerate. G & S Floor Service, we did such short trim because our ceilings are 7 feet, and we didn't want the floor trim to be visually overwhelming with such a short ceiling. Our openings are uncased; if we do decide to case them without changing the current floor trim (which is used in every room in the house), do the casings need to match with the floor trim? Is it proper to cut the cased opening at the bottom to fit the floor, as in this example:

At what point do you trim or stop a pothos from growing?

I think, there is no rule for that, you can trim it at any point. Just cut few nodes, root it in water and stick it in a same pot to have bushier look.

Thanks, all! I'm thinking through all the options.... I don't really want to take stained trim out of the two upstairs bedrooms because upstairs is really where I like the stained trim the best. Feels very cozy to me up there with the sloping ceilings, and just works. Part of the reason I don't love it so much downstairs, and especially in the dining room is because of the wide trim around the sliding glass door that is a different color and type of wood -- it just clashes, plus the built-ins are painted white, and it's a a mish-mash. Here's a scenario: What if I painted baseboards throughout the first floor of the house, and also the window and door trim in the dining room and kitchen, but left the stained window and door trim in the living room and rest of the first floor? Would that look janky or jarring? (Maybe I should note that we have quite a bit of wood furniture that my dad made throughout the house, so there would still be wood notes in the dining and kitchen.)

There are a ton of homes in my area that do not have the western feel. A lot of new builds especially are contemporary, though I'd say wood cabinets are still more popular than painted (when they are the premium woods like alder or cherry). I see a lot of varied styles in homes, such as Cape Cod, Victorian, Rustic, and Mid-century. Also, gray is a trend for a reason -- why is everyone so keen on knocking it? Just because you don't like gray or you think it's a fad, doesn't mean other people can't like it. Again, I personally would not change this houses' alder trim or cherry cabinets because those are premium materials and are really beautiful, but I also love white and gray cabinets too. You can mix cool and warm colors, gray and brown, and get really awesome results. The problem is when people decide to go gray and then everything is the same shade of gray. Don: I think that by just painting the walls, changing the lighting fixtures, then getting all your furniture in the home, you'll see a huge change. I would do a warm white for the walls in your house. For the flooring, if you wanted to replace all the wood flooring with white oak, I could see it costing 20k just for that, but get some estimates. Look at these homes with a mix of wood tones, grays, whites, and browns.

It makes good mat border inside your picture frame as well. Looks very elegant esp. in an oval frame with an old photo.

smaller pillows/sachets are one option.

trimming just the 'short' ends of rectangualr pillows is another option (one that I do fairly often)

I even did a few greeting cards with scraps of trim (3"long) that my friends really liked- though it's hard to tell if it was the trim they liked, or just getting a letter, eh?

This may sound crazy and not exactly what you asked about, but trim/lace can be glued onto flower pots if they aren't exposed to the elements. I have seen flower pots made to look really elegant or cool and funky just by adding some trim to them. You can either glue them on plain and just cover with a good sealer or glue then paint over the whole piece.

Also use it on wastebaskets for your bed and bath.

I used them to decorate dyed linen shoes and making night ligts.
