cleaning linen material on old pic frame

I bought an old wooden picture frame at a garage sale. The wood cleaned up easily and the dings I can fix, but I am stumped on how to clean a 1 1/2", off white, linen or canvas border around the inside of the frame. It is fairly dirty. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Wobur, you might go to the Christmas and Holiday forum as the gals over there are now talking about home decorating. I just asked a question the other day about how do I know if my fabric napkins are real linen and got good response, so they might know the answer to your question. As for me giving you an answer, please know I am no expert on this stuff whatsoever, but would "steam" work at cleaning the part that's dirty? Just a thought.

Try a knead eraser. You can find them in the art department of most craft stores.

My other suggestion would be one of those new Mr. Clean erasers.

Repairs include patching, darning, and stain removing (quite a bit online regarding laundering old linens.) Restoration includes matching embroidery with antique colored floss, hand embroidering and creating a matching motif over holes, reworking tattered needlework or needle lace, replacing or adding lace trims, repairing old embroidery, and hemstitching. You've got to be fairly skilled or go to the expense of entrusting them to a professional. I'm with sherrmann and have used the beautiful and intricately worked linens from my great greats for decades. I'm not cavalier about the care and preservation of lovely, irreplaceable things, but it seems using them is a greater tribute to a family's history than boxing them away in acid free tissue. They were utilitarian things right from the get go since paper napkins didn't spring onto the scene until the early 1930's. I doubt my great greats ever bothered to dream someone in 2012 would still find joy in using a square of cloth they painstakingly embellished. But if something should happen, well, it just happens and I might have fewer than a full set. I might look at things a little differently as I don't have children.

We recently finished a bathroom renovation, which involved tearing out the old linen closet and replacing it with a wider, shallower unit built from a base cabinet and a wall cabinet. No drawers. My bathroom linen closet holds towels, but no bed linens (we keep those in the B/Rs). I wanted to post a link to the small acrylic drawers that I found at the Container Store. I purchased four of these and they organize all of the hair things for my four daughters (we have a lot of hair stuff.....). These are big enough to hold headbands. Worth noting is that when I cleaned out the old linen closet, I realized that I had over-purchased many items, due in part because the old cabinet was so deep and high (I couldn't see most of the top shelf). Now that the closet is a more manageable size, I keep things grouped together so I can check quantity more readily. The base cabinet holds two hamper baskets and about 30 rolls of toilet paper (we are a large family). Also, during the renovation, we installed a pair of recessed medicine cabinets (one above each sink) and purchased two extra glass shelves for each one. It is incredible what these hold: tooth brushes. contact lens stuff, skin care items, drinking cups, eye glasses, etc. There is no more clutter on the counter, just soap, a clock, and a hand towel on a glass tray. Finally, like another poster said, I keep all medicines in the kitchen, there is space there for a variety of asthma meds, sunscreens, bug repellant, lots of bandages, OTC medication, hand sanitizer, etc. Here is a link that might be useful: Acrylic Drawers

So pretty! I bet those lower drawers will be great... I'd rather have those than the full-height linen closet in my upstairs hall. A bit OT... but would you mine posting a picture with more of your railing? I have a couple railings that are looking dated to me (part of an early 90's build), or they're just not my style. I really like the simple, clean lines of yours and the color of the wood. Thanks!

reesepbuttercup - Nice picture! You can't spot clean, but the Gumbacher's or Winsor & Newton cleaning fluid is inexpensive and easy to use. Any art supply store would have it. A 14x16 frame is actually a common enough size. Try the various hobby and frame shops when they are having a sale. Or this web site. And if the earlier ideas the others have given you don't work, you could maybe paint it with a thin coat of off white paint.. just be careful and don't get it on the frame.

Hi,

I had the same problem with an old frame I found. Sorry to report, I had no luck. Nothing I did could clean it. In fact, I think it just ground the dirt into the fibers.

I am going to go to my local craft/fabric store to get some of their by-the-yard ribbon. I know they have one their that is natural with a faint linen-like weave to it. I am going to glue mine right over the top of the old stuff.

I know my mom has used deep blue velvet ribbon on frames too.

What great ideas! I can try to clean it and if it doesn't work I will look for some ribbon I'll let everyone know if anything works. Thanks for the help everybody!

What is the best glue to use to adhere the linen ribbon to the linen border of the frame?

I have glued burlap before and it seeped thru, so even when it dried it's darker than the other areas without glue.
