Money matters?

Do those of you receiving child support add it too the monthly sum or keep it separate and use it for just those kids? DH and I have been debating this issue. When I was single I needed that money to get by and always just added it to my account to pay bills. When I got married I did that until I had a couple of experiences where a big bill would wipe out the monthly budget or savings and something important would come up for my kids and I would not have any money. For example DH had to go back to court (lawyer needed money) and BD wanted to play soccer and I didn't have the $75 in time to sign her up or I had a child support check that I had not deposited and DH wanted part of it to pay his child support but I needed it to cover a dentist appointment for BS.

I opened a checking account just for child support money which I do use for gas and food but I can also control for upcoming expenses. I think this is the responsible thing to do but DH thinks that we should just add it to the pot and use it as needed. I don't think that my X would appreciate funding DHs custody battle while my kids have to give up piano lessons or to know that his child support (which I am VERY frugal with) went to DHs exwife who blows it on drinking with her buddies.
