Overall, I recommend you start thinking about larger pieces. There are a lot of small pieces in the home which chops up spaces. Every wall does not have to be filled. When you do fill it, think "big". A chair like this would work with both the desk and the home. It is a little more contemporary. You could also go for something more traditional. I recommend a piece of art behind the desk. Something large. If you want a travel picture and it is taken with a good camera, then you can have it enlarged or framed. Collage walls are very tricky and can go bad quickly. They don't look good from far away. Most people will see that wall behind the desk from the hall. I recommend a collage wall across from the desk (wall that abutts the hall). Below that, I would put the filing cabinet. But, I'd buy something more traditional-looking and wider than the one you have. The one you have looks like it fits in an commercial office, not a home. I would not put the desk facing the window. It is very unsettling to have your back to a door. This rug is a good choice. You'll have to buy a large rug. It will have to be large enough to slide the chair back. Or, you can leave the chair part off the rug altogether. Plan and measure carefully. You do not have to have books to fill every shelf. Again, not every space has to be filled. Negative space is good. Does your Mom have some bookshelves she is not using? What about a dining room buffet that she doesn't use any more? That could be used also.

I'm not going to comment on the how the color works. But as someone who has recently been shopping for a new computer/desk chair myself, I hope this is one you can try out in person to first make sure it's comfortable for hours of sitting, that it supports your back properly, and that it has a decent range of adjustments. I'm in the process of returning a chair to a local store, that is great to sit in but has weird, uncomfortable arm rests that can't be adjusted to a comfortable position for mouse and keyboard use.

My son-in-law works from home and his company (federal government) would never pay to relocate his modem/setup. During this shutdown, many of his fellow employees who are suddenly trying to work from home haven't been able to do it well because of issues with wifi and equipment. He has 3 giant monitors and several computers dedicated to his job and they are never used for anything else. So, teleworking isn't always as easy as it may sound! My daughter, also federal employee, is not allowed to work from home, ever. I also vote for spoonflower.com. I can get lost for hours on that website, and have used peel and stick wallpaper in my laundry room and on the backs of tall bookcases. It's an easy peasy way to add color and interest. Currently considering something wild for the guest bathroom, but have to finish that Elfa project halfway installed in the garage - so much to do while at home! I
