What to do with old used tile?

I took up some floor tile and while they are all unbroken, they all have thinset on the bottom and I don't really want to clean it off, if that's even possible. Is there any reason to keep it? There's not much, about 9 sq feet.

Put an ad in your local Craigslist or freecycle ... people who make tile mosaic love this stuff.

The asbestos angle is certainly worth considering. However, even if they do not contain asbestos, they likely contain some non-biodegradable stuff. The aforementioned fiberglas is a good example. That was a replacement for asbestos fiber, to strengthen the cellulose fiber. There were probably some kind of glues or adhesives added to stick it all together. Finally, they are coated or painted, potentially with lead-based paint. Fiberglas and paint will never degrade and will be there until you dig it back up. I'm a big recycler but I would not put those in the garden. Some things really should go in the landfill (as much as I hate to say that). OR if they are in usable shape you might consider Freecycle, the Craigslist Free section, or donating to a Habitat for Humanity Restore or other building material reuse center.

Careful of the All-Clad handles on the fry pans and saute pans. They are oddly shaped, IMHO, and because of that, if the pan is heavy, the handles are difficult to hold. Go to a store and lift an All-Clad 12" fry pan, or a 10" saute pan, and you'll see what I mean. I think All-Clad is great for the cookware that does not have the long handles, like a stockpot, or a roasting pan, or you can get the 8" fry pan and the handles aren't a problem cause the 8" pan is small and therefore lighter. I think you should go to a store like BedBath&Beyond, Bloomingdales or Macys. Those stores have a varied selection of brands and price points so that you can look at different pans, lift them up, and see which ones you like. Also, don't get a set, get just the individual pans you use the most, and get different brands since some brands are better with some types of cookware than others.

Any chance that the Nikkos and ESs are getting too much fertilizer or fertilizer with a lot of nitrogen? If they are growing as sooo vigorously as your describe, it made me wonder if too much fertilizer would be the problem. Of course, I still cannot fathom how Nikko ever bloomed in 6A without winter protection. Is it getting any winter protection? Oh, I forgot to mention... You are not the only person complaining about ES not blooming in Zone 6. In theory, it should bloom from new wood, that is, from the new stems but those stems need to get tall and old enough to develop flower buds and then open the flower buds... before you get to the end of the growing season and the plants go dormant. But in practice, something is going on that makes a lot of people post of zero blooms in a whole z6 growing season for ES. Again, too much fertilizer might be the problem in this particular case. Down here, once the hydrangeas are established, I just mulch them. Before that, I would use 1/2 to 1 cup of organic compost, composted manure or cottonseed meal in Spring and then no more fertilizers for the rest of the year. Hydrangeas are not heavy feeders once established. What do you use, how much and how often? That is why I wanted to check on the possibility of too much fertilizer and pests like deer.

I have decorative old roofing tiles that I want to use on a small portion, just around my front porch, of my house as exterior siding not sure if I need to remove the rust and materials on the back of them or how to do that and what I need to put under them.

Since you did not mention color or design, here a a few ideas that might be put to use.

Put in the middle of a garden area and put either a large pot of plants on it or perhaps a statue or decorative item on it.

Place on their sides to edge a path or garden area.

Dig up the soil a bit and place them securly under the spiggot where the hose is hooked up, to prevent the mud puddle that usally occurs there.

I like to use one under my glue gun, so I do not have to worry about hot drips.

If you can remove the backing off of some of them, decopage and hang on the wall.

Use the clean ones for trivets.

Again if clean, arrage four or six of them on plywood, frame and use as a wall haning.

I love tiles and it would a shame to just toss something that still can be useful and artful.

That's all I can think of for now. Bet a lot of the wonderfully creative people here can find many more uses.

i use an old tile under my hotplate in the k itchen.

and one under my space heater...

and i have 2 old wrought iron stands outside w/o a top on them. this next yr they will be on my project list to get tiles for tops. my sister has tons left over from her h*ouse build so those might work... i have to measure them yet to find out.

so, any out door table tops to redo?

under your dog's water dish? or the cat's...

under a plant is very good!

under a garden statue for a solid base...
