Help-Granite counter support on island with overhangs and opening
Comments (0)We are doing kitchen upgrade- keeping our cabinets but replacing laminate countertops with granite. Our island is a bit unusual- two 18 " cabinets with a 30" opening between them, so my husband who uses a wheelchair can wheel underneath. We'd like to add 10" to either end of the island, making it a total of 86" long. The width is 36", with the cabinets being 26" and a 10" overhang. We know we need to add extra support for the granite. We are thinking of using two corbels on each end to cover the 10" overhang. Then using the counterbalance brackets I've read about on this forum for the 10" overhang on the long side. My questions are: are 2 of the brackets enough support, or would I need 4 brackets to support the 86" length? And do I need any extra support for the 30" opening between the cabinets? We'd like to get this worked out before the granite guys come to measure and template. Thanks for any suggestions....See MoreHelp with Structual Post / Aisle Widths / Island
Comments (10)Hi all, Thanks for the suggestions. I really want the kitchen to be the room in which we spend a lot of time. The desk is for the computer/internet use -- which we all access regularly. We have two kids, 11 and 13, and I like to keep an eye on what they're doing online (no separate computers in their bedrooms... at least yet!). Point taken about the dumping ground LWO. I'm trying to keep things organized with lots of new cabinet and drawer space (not shown in my drawings). I'm getting rid of a formal dining room and so definitely want to keep the breakfast seating nook. We sit around the table for as many meals as we can. Jeff/LWO -- great suggestions about the steel beam. Lisa -- thanks for the link and heads-up. Definitely a factor of my drafting software but now this will be something I plan for. I love my current height of the DO's; hadn't thought how this could change with new cabinets. Bmorepanic -- can you please explain what you mean by all the food on the same side of the room? I thought fridge next to breakfast area/DW would be good placement. Pour milk for dinner; clear table and left overs back in fridge. Similar question for you LWO -- why would flow be better with fridge on other side of island? Because of prep sink? Thanks!!!...See MoreDoes my Island Overhang need this much support??
Comments (12)I know fabricators sometimes use metal strips to brace overhangs. They are basically invisible and very strong. I think sometimes (maybe always?) they are inset into the granite. I would want to do that and then use some lighter, more graceful corbels on the corners. I believe the corbels would serve an aesthetic purpose more than a functional one. I agree that almost 4'' thick top is way too much....See MoreHelp, cant center light fixture due to structual beam...
Comments (10)Guessing the problem is more electrical than structural. With some finished wood panels, or even some pipe fittings (all the rage) and some brackets - you could build a false soffit to house the electrical and mount any type fixture underneath. Did a little section sketch for you, but would probably need to see more to come up with the best solution. Good luck & have fun. -f...See More2LittleFishies
