Indoor awning?

We are nearing the end of a remodel/addition of a master bedroom suite. I have decided to decorate it in a garden theme. The bedroom has a 6 foot Pella French door slider with the blinds on the inside of the glass. As a window treatment for them, I would like to make an awning on the inside. I have a beautiful garden bench to serve as a seat, 6 foot tall trellises to use as headboards and other "garden" decorations. Has anyone ever made anything like this or ever seen anything like this? I can sew , but I am anxious about this project. I have a black fleur de lis rod to go against the wall and a 6 inch projection white rod for the bottom of the awning. Any ideas are welcome... and thanks!

I had an "indoor awning" over the baby's bedroom window..... my friend sews for a living and suggested it. It was blue & white stripes and was adorable. That baby is 16 now, so sorry no pix.

No wonder you confused me :) You definately did sound like you had experience, but then again I wasn't sure. I have a 3 year old myself...and when he's 4 I sure hope I'm decorating a nursery again! Cloth diapers pre folded would be ok in the stacker, but like you say, any way to keep them handy would work. I think that peg rack is perfect for them given it's location by the changing table. Look around (ebay etc) they make mobiles specifically for changing tables. I had one, but it's been so long I don't remember what brand it was, but your changing table is the same style as mine so it would work. The mirrors for the back of the door...I forgot to mention...get the cheap ones that aren't really made of mirror glass LOL They have them at fred meyer, kmart, etc. Or if you get mirror glass, just add a film to the front of the glass (that stuff you squeege on to windows to filter light works great). I did that on all of the pictures hanging over DS's bed just incase they every fell (we have earthquakes and a really big one will knock down anything). I read the tip in some wifey magazine for any art hanging in a kids room in glass, since bouncing balls etc can make a glass mess. With this stuff, the glass still breaks of course, but since it's stuck onto the film, it typcically does not fall out or shatter into shards on the floor. I have to share...the remark about the bedding did crack me up. My little guy was so sick he was always vomiting or pooping his way out of his bed, typically several times a night. I got rid of the fancy silk bedskirt and bumper pads pretty darned quickly. He has cotton sheets, currently with either elmo or some hand painted blues clues paw prints on them and uses his down comforter only if I've left the duvet off :) He's much better now, but we still have more barfing than the normal kid so it's still easier to just keep all of the bedding easy and washable!

Thank you, Barb. I thought about putting them outside again until we get another freeze warning. But, I'm not sure if they like being brought in & out. And, they're too big to just bring in every night. We have fairly mild winters...but, it's those few cold spells that ruin things. I've thought about Visqueen before (making a makeshift greenhouse). But, both ends have steps that we use all year round (4ft wide openings in a 8ft wide deck). So, it would be difficult to completely enclose it. I do have some lighting inside, but I'm not sure if it's enough. The lemon started blooming just a few days after I brought it inside. It may have started blooming outdoors. If I ever get another house, my dream is to have a sunroom attached to a uncovered concrete patio, so I can have them on wheels and roll them in & out :) Thanks for your help!

Some folks give their plants supplementary lighting. Some grow strictly under lights. Many put their plants outside for the summer. In wet, humid areas they may setup an awning that can be extended during rainy periods to keep the plants dry. Then some folks adjust their collections to succs, like Haworthia, that don't require as much light. I summer my plants outside but bring them in for the winter. During that time, I give them a bright window and water very sparingly.

Thank you once again for the pictures (your house is lovely). Also for all the information shared. Our Awning Rep. is coming on Wednesday. We will be ordering our retractable awning with the hood & the wind sensor. He said it will take three weeks. I do have several more questions about wind sensor for him. ( I'm wondering if when the batteries go on the wind sensor does it effect the awning from retracting when I use the remote control just to open it up?) While I had him on the phone yesterday, I also had asked him about a full cassette which encases the awning. Unfortunately, the one he has doesn't cover the retractable arms just the fabric ($880.00.+). We have been looking on the internet for a cover for the awning. We found something on the internet which covers the top and bottom of the awning. We hope this will do the job. TBH, I didn't realize that birds like to make nests in the awning so therefore home owners cover it up. Once again thank you so much.

Vampiress: I got the Fleur De Lis rod at Hobby Lobby ($14.99 - 40% coupon), and the six inch projection rod at Lowe's ($6.97).

I am glad to hear others have heard of this kind of window treatment. I will investigate the Pate-Meadows, thanks Graywings!

I think I will try to make it with Sunbrella type material in a green and white bold stripe (if I can find it)with the traditional scallops at the skirt. Just wish I had a pattern... guess I will do it by trial and error :)

Any other ideas are welcome!

Dang...wouldn't you know it...no Hobby Lobbys in California, but sure I can find it somewhere. I was more worried about not finding the projection rods, but will check out Lowe's. THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU :-)

I wonder if you bought a sunbrella awning if you could use it as a pattern and then return it unused-say it won't work on your window...or maybe the instruction link below will help.

Vampiress: Check out the Pate-Meadows pics and patterns that Graywings suggested. The way they have attached the top of their awnings to the wall with the drapery hold-backs is very cute.
THANK YOU for the "how-to" link. That makes me feel a little better about tackling this project.
I would try the Sunbrella idea, but around here all Sunbrella awnings are custom made.

As I said, this master suite will have a garden theme. The material I am going to use (I think!)is at JoAnn.com. It is a Robert Allen for DwellStudioÂ® Fabric in the Botany Flora Leaf # 2305985. The monitor does not do the color justice,but it is bright and just the color I need.
Does anyone think that this will be ok for an awning? Any other ideas? Thanks!
