So BF and I have talked about that when we move to his place, and A__ will finally have his own room, we would like to have him with us more. I will share a few reasons why we want this. I will share a few reservations I have about this. Then I will ask some questions of you guys.
We would like to ask for Thursday after school until Saturday at around suppertime.
Why we want A__ more:
- A__'s life has almost no stability. As I've said before, he has four houses, but no regular schedule. Any kid needs to have a stable and predictable life to be emotionally and academically successful, but we think we'd see leaps and bounds in A__'s ability to manage his ADHD if he had more stability.
- Grandma has A__ a LOT, but has virtually no rules for him because she's fed up with all her kids dumping their kids on her to take care of. I don't mean to say that A__ should have a barrel of restrictions to follow, but she doesn't even tell him to do his homework or brush his teeth before bed. Us having A__ more would give Grandma a break and also give A__ better structure for that sort of thing.
- We think it will give A__ a good opportunity to observe a good relationship built on love and respect. (BM keeps him away from her boyfriend, Grandma is the widow of an abusive alcoholic, and Papa's marriage appears to be a patriarchy, not a partnership)
- We want to spend more time with him and better quality time, that actually fosters a good relationship between us.
My reservations:
- I'm not 100% sure I'm ready for the additional responsibility. I'm a grad student in science, so sometimes my evenings are spent on 4 hours of reading or writing papers. Sometimes I want to go out for coffee with a friend all evening or skip dinner because I had a late lunch. I feel selfish for saying this, but I like the freedom to do that sort of thing.
- BF works 3 different shifts (7am to 3pm, 9am to 5pm, and 3pm to 11pm)... So two weeks of out six, I'd be getting A__ ready and to school myself, but BF would pick him up and be home all evening. Two weeks out of six, BF could get him ready and to school, but I'd be picking him up before BF got home at 5:30ish. The other two weeks it would be just me at home with him in the evenings, but BF would be home to get him ready and to school in the morning. This isn't precisely a regular routine, so I'm not sure if it counteracts our wish for A__ to have more stability. He might not be sure who was picking him up, but at least he'd know that he spends every Thursday and Friday night at Dad and Ceph's.
- A__ can be a handful and sometimes I need a break from him after only a few hours. So I'm worried that having him that much will drive me bonkers... But on the occasions where we've had him for a few days straight, he's been less of a handful than when we only have him for a half day, which lessens my concern about this.
So now for my questions:
- I've been honest with BF about my reservations, and he's very supportive. What were your reservations about having more custody of the SC? Did you talk to SO about them? How did your SO respond?
- Do you think the weird shifts that BF works would counteract the stability of knowing what house he'd be at? (Keep in mind that A__ and I have a good relationship)
- Am I a big jerk for having the reservations I have?
- Does 2 nights and ~2.5 days seem like a huge jump from our previous usual 1 night (sometimes 2) and ~1.5 days plus soccer on Thursday evenings? If he was always with BM, I'd think it was, but he spends about three nights at Grandma's (and usually Thursday and/or Friday is among those)
- And most importantly, how the heck do we broach this to BM?? We don't know how to tackle this without seeming like we're stepping on her... (Keep in mind, she and BF have a fairly good relationship, so we're not dealing with a lot of malice, but that also means we have a lot to lose)
Our best idea was to tie this request in with moving into BF's freshly renovated home, where A__ will finally have his own room and there will be two adults to provide care. So BF could kind of propose it as "I was thinking that we could work out a regular plan for when we each have A__ now that he has a room at my place. I think it would be easier for you to plan your work schedule of you know when I'd have him, and it would be easier for both of us to plan social lives and grocery shopping and stuff. I'd like to have a little more time with him, and I think he'd like more time with me too"...
How would you approach this?
