What glue did you use and what were the conditions which caused fall off (rain, snow, sleet, hail, tornadoes or just mosaic gremlins?)?

Is this going to be an exterior project and what zone/climate?

Are you mosaicing with stained glass, ceramic tiles, pebbles or ?

More info needed before answering the question.

I'm in Texas - it was rainy last night. I just bought some glue at Hobby Lobby that was labeled "mosaic" glue. I'm gluing broken china and glass beads. It will be put back outside after I'm finished, or might go into the trash pile - either way it's outside :)

Many of us use GE II silicone. This is about all I use anymore. It works very well on glass. I did a outdoor glass table with it recently. The hobby type mosaic glue isn't waterproof. I have also used clear liquid nails for glass on glass. It works & is waterproof, but for me it's harder to work with. It seems to form a skin on the glue very fast while I'm working with it. For outdoor projects always check the label & make sure the adhesive is waterproof. If it doesn't say it is, assume it's not. If you can get the old glue cleaned off, get some GE II & start over. Count this as a learning experience, and make sure you post a picture when you're all finished! Good Luck,

Goop the GE Silicone II on well enough to hold down the unusual shapes of broken plates, but not so high as to bump up between pieces. Keep the table covered until done (dew can and does affect things). When you choose grout be sure to get a grout suitable for exterior use. And when the grout is dry (about a week in low humidity), seal seal seal the grout and any edges of the tesserae that stick out.

mwench, you brought up something I'd never known. Does grout say on the bag whether it's suitable for outside? I've always used the same stuff in and out and thought any cracking was due to when I didn't know any better and was putting in on wood. Thanks

Mine always says somewhere (in small print in many languages)"suitable for interior or exterior wall or floor use."

I use North American Adhesives dry grout. It's already fortified with an acrylic additive and I just add water. Funny that it says I should address any questions to Maipei . . . I wonder if this is their discount brand.

The only thing I would clarif for our beginner, Momof3, is the type of GE II silicon adhesive. I know when I first read about it on this forum I searched high and low becasue I just had the info GEII. I didn't really know what that meant or was and my husband thought I was crazy when I located the same stuff he had in the garage. So I was very shaky on what I was using.

Anyway, the most popular one on this forum is GE II silicone for windows and doors. Gin or Wench, correct me if you were directing her to something else.

You're right d3bbi. The weird part is the Silicone II is sold as "window and door" and as "household adhesive" . . . .for the same price.

I've looked at the ingredient list and proportions on both and they are EXACTLY THE SAME. Go figure.

You want clear, not white. Comes in a tube about 6-8 inches long.
