Jane Scraps: Outside The Box

Well, I was over on the Garden Junk side, and also with that scrap project I found...I went and hauled out some..."interesting" stuff that I've been hourding in my shed...getting a few ideas of using this stuff. Since it will be copperfoiled and soldered together, I figured it was fair game to post it here. I originally intended to make a copper water fountain with some of this stuff but heck, use it for this sounds good to me, that fountain thing has passed my fancy...too much work! AND I also used some scraps to make these garden danglies, and I made like 10 of them, just fishing line with mirror and scrap glass glued to tit, with a swivel to help it move in the wind...well I hung em all together to just get them out of the way...and I love having a bunch together like this!!! It will look really cool outside I think!

Welcome Melissa! I think all the bases about the "collection" process has been covered, but here's my 2 cents: I use a stainless steel compost pot on the kitchen counter (it has a double odor-filter in the lid) - it's about a gallon capacity. Why do I put it on the counter? Well, b/c if I were to run outside w/every scrap, I'd probably make 10 trips a day - there's the breakfast napkins & toast scraps & maybe strawberry tops, then the 10 am coffee making means emptying the breakfast coffee grinds, then there's the lunchtime (when I'm home for lunch) left over salad or veggie or fruit scraps, then there's the dinner prep, and the various misc paper towels throughout the day. Oh, and all of the pressed board boxes, egg cartons, paper towel tubes, etc. (but those go into a separate bag mostly). So, the countertop crock gets filled up about once a day or every other day, and then after dinner, I'll just take it out to my compost pile (which is actually a rubbermaid 33 gal container b/c of locale limitations). Why did I get the stainless steel countertop compost crock? It was a Christmas gift to me from my DH to allow him to keep his sanity, which he was "losing" due to seeing (alleged) "garbage" on the counter (albeit in tupperware containers) for more than an hour. The stainless steel sits next to the coffee maker, looks attractive, is out of the way, and makes it easy for the entire family to be a part of, and support, the composting efforts. :) Have fun! Aliska We grow in containers because even after we augment our soil for years it looks like this: It doesn't matter how much organic matter we put in. All it takes is a few gullywashers a year and the compost washes down the hill and we are back to trying to garden in rocks and coal. The only way to hold organic matter in the soil here is to augment very heavily and have a ton of perennial plants with huge mats of roots to help anchor it. So veg went to containers and in-ground growing is mainly used for hardy perennial flowers. To fill the containers, we have a great compost heap and we spend as much time growing soil as we do growing our plants. Here's two of our compost heaps in 2008 - that's after all the buckets were filled: Since then we've stepped up our composting a lot. We actually harvest our forest floors now. Two reasons for that. One is to feed the compost heap with the organic matter from the forest floor and from our annual leaf harvest. The second is to expose the soil on the forest floor so we can seed into it and grow more stuff for the animals to eat. This is our star compost producer. She's good for about 2 five gallon buckets of collectibles each day. (That's just the black gold she leaves in the back yards closest to the compost heap. She also leaves plenty out in the hills.) Connie the queen of compost: As for intermediate transplanting. Part of it is that potting up size by size is good for the plants. Part of it is that while potting up season is in full swing, we have to spend to spend day after day sieving compost and blending it with a little perlite. It takes time to get enough compost to fill close to 500 buckets. We use fresh compost in the buckets each year. That decreases disease risk for the plants and lets us plant them in soil that is so nutrient rich that we never use fertilizer. At the end of the growing season the compost from the buckets gets put in my giant flower gardens. The reason we have so many plants is that we grow most of our own food. Gardening isn't a hobby for us - it's dinner! We are both vegetarian so don't worry - cute Connie and the goats are working animals (landscaping crew and compost makers), not future meals. As we've transitioned to doing all of our food growing in containers, we've seen other gardeners in the area do the same. We get used buckets from our friendly local scrapyard dealer. He's a gardener who's now using more containers and he tells his other gardening customers about it. It's a lot of work, but it's usually better than fighting Appalachian hill soil. It also lets us control the soil moisture - not an easy thing to do if you are ground growing and the weather is cycles of drought and flood. I made about 800 bucks in a week break1ng down and carting off scrap from an aluminum, stainless, and copper-brass-bronze commercial steam box unit that was in a bakery. My total investment of time was about 12 hours. The floor was stainless and was worth over $200 itself. The doors were aluminum sheet over blueboard, and the front structure had a fair amount of aluminum. Scrap is at an all time high. Copper is running about $1.40 a pound here, aluminum up to $0.40, IRRC, and stainless was $0.90 a few weeks ago. Even sheet metal is going for $0.02 and good steel for a nickel and up. BUT: if you're selling copper it has to be separated from any other stuff, or they pay the price of the cheapest material. Same with aluminum- a two pound door latch made of aluminum, with one steel pin in it, is worth the same as two pounds of steel. You can spend a lot of time getting that pin out. Radiators can be worth a few bucks. So yes, you can do a lot of work for a very little money. But if you're just hanging around of an afternoon and want to give it a try it's not a bad experiment, the environment is helped, and it may pay a little for your time. If you have kids you might put them to work on it and let them keep the cash (just watch out for your beer can stash once they figue it out.) It might not be worth it to cut the fins from the copper, but sometimes techniques reveal themselves once you get started, and the scrap company doesn't care how torn, battered and beaten your scrap looks! You should call them and ask how they need things done. They'll tell you. Good luck and have fun, M ps- sorry about your bad heat pump.

Persuasion is my favorite, too. I love the theme of second chances in a life that has turned out to be disappointing. It has a bittersweet quality that has always appealed to me. Having said that, I really do like them all. Mansfield Park is fascinating to me. Some of the moral issues that are being weighed in the book seem trivial to modern sensibilities, others are timeless; but I like its exploration of what it is that makes a good person, and how easily the world overlooks these true qualities. Northanger Abbey is the lightest novel she wrote. If you grew up reading Victoria Holt and similar writers as I did, you will laugh at this wonderful spoof of the gothic novel, popular in Austen's day as well as the 1960's and 70's. Sense and Sensibility is a story of two sisters who embody the extremes of a debate going on in Austen's own time. Marianne (Sensibility) stands for the Romantic movement, all emotion and aesthetic experience and the sublime experience of nature. Elinor (Sense) expresses the values of the Enlightenment, self-discipline, prudence, knowledge, and moral virtue. Each one has something the others lack, and in the story, they both learn this. I love this book, too. Emma you already know, a story of just how wrong an intelligent, overly confident young woman can be. And Pride and Prejudice you are reading now. I'm thinking that pretty soon it will be time for me to re-read Austen yet again. Rosefolly

Just awoke from a nap, and decided to check in here. I'm howling w/laughter, w/mascara-filled tears rolling down my cheeks. THEN you other clowns chime in and made it worse. I saw the error, but it didn't register, then after reading your second post, had to go back and re-read and couldn't find what you misspelled, until it finally tit me - oh, I mean hit me. WHAT A CIRCUS - you bunch of NUTS - all of you!!!!! LOL. BTW I love the cluster of danglies - I've made five, but they hang separately. Now I'll have to copy you.

Okay, I'm still working on tweaking these but I think I should stick to mosaics at this point! lol! Heck, hadta try! 1st one I made is the plate extravaganza, 2nd one is the daisy/coaster dohickey that will get a copper pole, 3rd is still getting mosaiced on the globe part...
