How much space do you have between your upper and lower cabs?
Comments (24)I learned something interesting from my contractor when we discussed mounting the wall cabinets a little higher so I could have enough space for certain appliances as well as a light rail. My contractor told me that I'd need to customize the cabinets by either reducing the height of the wall cabinets or increasing the height of the full-height cabinets (like the pantry and double oven cabinets.) Otherwise, mounting wall cabinets higher would result in cabinets where the tops don't line up. jayne p.s. I reduced the height of the wall cabinets to 34 1/2. I probably could have been fine with 35 inches but there's no way I would have known it until the end of the installation so better this way than not being able to cover the undercabinet lighting....See MoreAre my upper cabinets going to be too tall? Comments (2)There was just a thread on this a few days ago - I've linked it below in case you didn't see it. Following their rule of thumb, if you have 56" total for the two cabinets the upper should be should be about 18", but you can do whatever you think looks good. I have 60" total in my kitchen, so mine should 40" and 20". We aren't using custom cabinets, so the closest standard cabinets would be 42" and 18". I don't like that look, so I'm going 36" and 24". Also, I like about 12" between shelves, so that allows me a shelf spacing I'll like. Comments (6)I don't know what finish hardware you are doing, but your choices sound very classic. What color cabinetry are you doing? Sounds to me like you would be most comfortable with a vertically mounted pull. Is this correct? Check out the link below, specifically the Karen Bale kitchen that uses strap hinges as accent pieces on the barn door cabinetry. Would you consider an accent piece--along the lines of Loves2cook's kitchen but keeping with your style? I am not sure of all the elements in your kitchen, but how about an iron forged grip--bold yet traditional: iron grip Here is a link that might be useful: karen bale kitchen...See MoreWhat would you do if your kitchen didn't have a pantry?
Comments (58)>>...didn't have a pantry?>> Well, I wouldn't have any room to store any food, LOL. I cook a lot so I have doubles and even triples of every size cookware I use, plus 25 yrs ago I moved in with six sets of dinnerware and three sets of flatware. I have three separate spice drawers because I cook everything from Indian to Chinese to French and half a dozen other cuisines. It was my first (and so far only, thank goodness) opportunity to design a kitchen, so I crammed in all the storage I could. We were handicapped by only having 1 wall of uppers. One half-wall holds the frig and is open to the LR and DR. The other wall has floor-to-ceiling windows to capture a great hillside view: I worked with graph paper and managed to get everything behind doors. It was about a week before I realized I had FORGOTTEN to put in any food storage! I did have three narrow closets in the DR (a former bedrm) for the upright freezer, the microwave and wine stemware, and the table linens/vacuum/stepladder. But nothing for dried pasta, Asian condiments, dried mushrooms, cans of soup, etc. So.....we had fortunately not placed the order for the kitchen cabs yet. Two 18" wide pantry units were hastily added, and placed in-between the DR and kitchen. The top doors hide fixed shelves, the bottom doors hide rollouts. All are height adjustable, heavy-duty. I'd never had a pantry before. Now I'm spoiled and can't imagine living w/o one! A walk-in would be nice, but there's only two of us so not really needed. Ten years later I had a handyman built us a custom storage unit for our indoor back porch area. It was such a pain carrying the vacuum up and down stairs, I finally broke down and bought a second upright. I don't have any good photos of it, but half is deep enough for the vacuum and BBQ tools, about 12". The other half has shallow, 7" shelves that store dry goods like spray paints (for DH's hobby), DW tablets, Brita filters, vacuum cleaner bags, etc....See Moregeokid
