I finally manged to get this done and take a picture of it. It is a glass on glass, I used an old candle holder from a ts and cut out the centre grid and candle holders just leaving the framework. I had a piece of glass cut to fit and then added my glass on glass bits and attached it to the frame. I used some of the oceana scrap glass I had bought on ebay. The red half circle I just couldn't bring myself to cut up so just featured it whole. I've taken a picture of this outside with the sun shining through and in front of the fireplace. It glows beautifully when the fire is on. There's also a picture of the unit in front of the fireplace. I used marine silicone to adhere this, and used magnolia grout, the same as I had used for the fireplace,

That is so pretty. I just love that Oceana glass. I wish I could use it all the time.

BEAUTIFUL!!! I wouldn't have wanted to cut that big of a piece of Oceana, either! What a great idea...

You should never alter a fireplace without the help of an expert. Installing glass could be very dangerous for a number of reasons 1) it could explode because you used the wrong type of glass 2) it could explode because there isn't an efficient venting system 3) before it explodes, the glass will get extremely hot anyways, making it ineffective at protecting pets and young ones The only way to install glass, would be to install panels on to the sides only, and leave the front open. Your best bet would be a mesh screen. Talk to your local fireplace retailer about your options. They should be able to help you out with a custom screen.

Stoll is as good as it gets for fireplace doors, screens and accessories. I've heard some of their quality control has gone down just a notch recently, but still very good. Their competitors are Design Specialties (glassfireplacedoors.com) and Portland Willamette. The short answer is they have better designs, better workmanship and finishes, and are made in the US. They also stand behind their warranty. Just cherry picking one example, do you think cheap imports have powder coated finishes, or are they spray painted? (Educated guess, the $40 screens at Walmart are not made with a high quality finish.) Can you select from 40 or 50 different finishes? As for designs, their products just plain look better than anyone else's, and they cover all possible styles traditional, colonial, rustic, industrial, modern, contemporary, blah, blah, blah. Another example, look at Design Specialties website, they have a 'glass screen' that is a sleek and modern design, and not something you'd find on Amazon. Stoll's grates for example are thicker steel stock (5/8" vs 1/2" or 3/8") and came in multiple sizes and heights. If you are outfitting a ski lodge or a resort hotel with a showcase fireplace in the center of the lobby then Stoll is the go to supplier for really large or unique sized grates. They have a lower cost version of their grates, the Essential line that I believe are imported and of course lower cost. For fireplace doors all this means a lot, in design, style, fit, alignment, finishes, etc. (translation, don't buy fireplace doors through Amazon or via mail order). For a simple screen this may not all that much, and maybe something generic from Lowes or Home Depot fills the need. Edit: Other sources of lower cost screens and accessories: Link Link WalMart Link

Beautiful....it looks so different in the sunlight as opposed to just in front of the fire place. It's like you have two pieces in one...gorgeous!

That is lucious! Wow! Always impressed with how things are cut to fit...then fitting it right in where it is suppose to fit........and it fits.........What a great combination of glass! Love the oceania...(love what you gave *us* and haven't shared with Janice yet...okay, you know I will) Beautiful...just beautiful!!!!!

Well, CINDY, if you don't beat all!! I couldn't understand the candle holder part, but think I'm getting it. You REALLY had an eye for it's possibilities. That's the prettiest fireplace screen I've EVER seen. Your placement of the tesserae is just plain magnificent (sp??). This is truly a beautiful work of art. Are the square tiles like the ones y'all put in my care pkg? This whole concept is superior plus.

I'm glad you all like this. That large piece of glass has a smooth rounded edge. It's just so cool. The squares are from some glass Janie-bo and I got from a man selling off glass and supplies. I got several different pieces, it has little bubbles and a bit of a pattern to it. I actually meant for this to have the half circle on the bottom, duhhh when I attached the glass to the frame I never noticed it was upside down.I finally noticed when I put it in front of the fireplace. Oh well, it still looks fine so it's staying the way it is.
