In the 14 years of our marriage, I had met SD approximately once every two years for a week because we lived on the other side of the country. Her father visited her at least three times a year at her place while on business trips. Recently we have moved within an hours driving distance of SD. In the last year SD, her husband and their child have spent a total of 27 days in our home. SD has always been contemptuous toward me but I had no real idea of the intensity of her envy until we moved here.
The child is a joy, and I in no way resent her presence in my home. Her husband is also gracious and helpful, and I wouldnÂt object to any of them visiting if I were treated respectfully. SD enters our home gives me the perfunctory hello, then proceeds to ignore me as best she can for the following days. From the moment of her arrival she never leaves her fatherÂs side. At first I found it amusing to see a woman that age trailing behind her father like a little kid, but my amusement soon turned to annoyance and finally to alarm when SD refused to acknowledge my rights in my own home, was hostile at every opportunity and soon began to INFORM me when she would be coming into her "dad's house" next because "no one cares what you think."
SD was told that I would be consulted before visits so she decided to show me who the real boss is. Next visit SD brought a single friend of hers into our home who my husband had met on several occasions while visiting his daughter. The entire evening was spent purposely excluding me from the conversation while SDÂs friend and my husband discussed their previous activities together and plans for future activities together without me. It was a calculated attack by SD and her friend and enabled by my husband. I asked my husband if he wanted to divorce.
He didn't want a divorce, but I have informed him that his daughter is no longer allowed to treat me like I am an unwanted intruder in my own home. She is no longer going to behave as though all our resources are only her fathers. She will no longer help herself to my camera, my computer, my car or any other item that is known to be personally mine without asking ME first. She will no longer refer to me in my presence as "that woman, her or she" nor will she roll her eyes, smirk, glare, accidentally bump into me or any other intentional hostile body language in her repertoire. She will no longer ask me why my house is so dirty, why I don't cook good meals, when I am going to stop spending all her dadÂs money, what do I do all day, when am I going to get a job, and why am I so stupid. I have broken my back trying to have a relationship with her and her family and she has made it clear she doesnÂt want to share anything with me.
Meanwhile I find out that much backstabbing and gossip have been instigated by SD and BM. In addition to trying to keep SD from her dad, BM and SD have told everyone in my husbandÂs family that I broke up the marriage, and that I only did it for the money. Truth? They had been separated for four years before I even met him; we lived thousands of miles apart, NO we didn't meet on the Internet and BM was given 90% of the marital assets. It is nothing more that vicious, bitter gossip in an attempt to cast aspersions on my character. Strangely my husband will never step in and correct the lies.
I realize much of the problem is my husband's guilt and inability to face conflict and deal with the fact that his "sweet little girl" is neither little nor sweet anymore. I think he has finally realized that SD has a hidden agenda to drive me away so she can have access to father and all his "alleged" money that she thinks is rightfully hers. The money myth was started and kept alive by BM, who is now suddenly SDÂs best friend and confidant. BM also lives nearby and has never remarried although she continues to live with her friend she met before the divorce.
Although I feel it is not the correct solution, unless our relationship changes SD is no longer welcome in our home. She has lost my trust and I see her as a dangerous person to me. I will never be in her company without another person present. It is very disturbing to encounter a personality this calculating and apparently devoid of conscience. Now she and Dad can visit elsewhere. I never have and never would want to keep them apart.
Thoughts anyone?
