A Difficult Behavior

My DH and I are looking for some suggestions on how to curb some bad behavior that SD has been having.

For some background, DH and I have been together for about 6 years. SD is 9, my DD is also 9, and we have a 4yo together, all girls. SD spends about 35-40 percent of her time at our house and the rest with BM or maternal family.

Recently SD has been saying negative and mean things about everyone, including herself. Her gammit of comments ranges from "I am so stupid. Nobody cares about me," about herself, to "You're not as pretty or smart as me," to 9yo, to "I hate you. You are so annoying," to 4yo, to "You are so mean," to me and DH, to a myriad of things about her friends at school.

We have told her that it's unacceptable to make rude and derrogatory statements about anyone, including herself. She doesn't see the problem at all if it's a comment about herself. We have tried to explain about self-esteem and how she is not stupid or unloved and how she shouldn't make those kinds of statements because we wouldn't allow anyone else to make them about her.

When it comes to correcting her in making remarks about or towards others, she is always defensive and blames her remarks on the intended victim. When asked how she would feel if the remarks were from someone else about her, her response is always, "I wouldn't care," which we all know is not true. We tell her that even if she doesn't care, we love her and we do care, so we would not allow that behavior towards her from others. She will stop making the remarks once corrected, but it is usually followed by stomping to her room exclaiming about how we love the other person more than her.

Today I had a conversation with DD9, and somewhat, but to a lesser extent, DD4, about walking away and not allowing anyone to make ugly comments about others or to them in their presence if possible. They understand not to be rude and say mean things, but didn't really understand what to do when others behave in that manner. I think this talk will also come in helpful for DD9 in dealing with "mean girls" at school as well. DD9 has a bad habit of not directly being mean, but tending to go along with others who aren't being so nice when in their company. I explained that going along with this behavior is the same as committing it yourself, no better.

We're really worried about SD's behavior in this regard and need some suggestions on how to correct it before it starts to adversely affect her realtionships with family and friends.
