cutlery dividers

I am looking for nice cutlery divider trays to pop into my drawer. I saw some nice metal ones at IKEA, but when I went to their website, it looks like you have to have their metal drawer to put in their metal dividers.

Can any of you recommend your cutlery dividers?

I just went to Bed Bath and Beyond the other day and found a very nice extendable bamboo cutlery tray. It was only $30 and I had a $10 off coupon. It extends to fit the entire width of the drawer. When my DH saw it he said it looked like it was made for the drawer. HTH!

I have expandable bamboo cutlery trays from Container Store in a couple of drawers. In one of the drawers, it's great. In the other, I'd rather have dividers only, not a tray. The issue with this drawer is that the tray's bottom reduces the usable depth of the drawer by about 1/4 inch or so. Doesn't sound like a big deal until you're trying to fit spatulas etc. into a shallow drawer.

So... I'll be looking for the answers you get. I've seen some expandable dividers (no bottoms, just the slats) but haven't tried them.

belle- Are you adding a hutch along the hallway wall? or just the double galley? A hutch could be adding 3-6k. You might look at finding a free standing piece elsewhere, in an old house would certainly look like it belonged and could save a bit. See if there is a QCCI dealer nearby. I simply had to know so checked pricing. Maybe you can find a more civilized dealer from them, you won't be disappointed in the finish or details by comparison. Worth a look. The right dealer and your in the mid to upper teens (no hutch), though they do have a few rock stars (mid 20's). BTW- t particular hood is a bargain from them which is a savings. Use a standard valance instead of a carved one, no corbels, can also can get the top section unfinished and faux paint locally to save a little more. Putting one on display here that way now. Any news on the window and stub wall?

hi lirio- thanks for your input... i will post the elevation for where this drawer would be (highlighted in yellow on elevation). It is my prime area for prepping but is also my best area for unloading the dishwasher which is my preference for storage of my cutlery (vs. table setting area... most of our family meals are eaten in the dining room anyway). re: the tips of the paring knives - I've got a bunch of them as I use them all day everyday for mostly peeling apples for the kids, or potatoes for dinner or chopping onions if I don't want to use one of my big knives. My paring knives (some date back to my college days!) aren't precious - if I were to pursue this idea (which at this point is questionable as I am just not sure it is the right way to go) I'm not so worried about their points and I would have some sort of soft absorbant towel underneath this set up which would keep points from meeting wood. Re: butter knives - should have said dinner knives. I don't really have any butter knives but use the dinner knives all the time for buttering toast, etc. I don't know... maybe this will work? not too sure about it.

I bought several yards of Pacific Silvercloth about 25 years ago and made roll-up pouches with individual slots for each placesetting of my sterling. I also made several pillowcase type pouches with drawstrings for trays, pitchers, etc. I've only had to touch up the polish on the flatwear occasionally in the last 25 years because I put the place settings back into their pouches immediately after my dinner parties. My serving pieces get left out more frequently, so I've had to polish them more. I recommend this approach to ANYONE. It doesn't matter if you're a poor sewer because crooked lines do not matter. The absolutely easiest way to make them is to cut the pieces with the rotary cutting wheels that quilters use and them assemble them with a serger.

The drawer is 20-1/2" wide inside, and the jars are just slightly over 2", so they fit with a tiny amount of wiggle room. If I push them to one side, there's less than 1/4" gap. I haven't used them yet to see how well they work. The lids are very tight- once you think they are on, you can give them another 1/4 turn, and I'm sure they will be quite tight. I actually hope they loosen a bit with use, as I don't know if my wife has the grip strength to open them. We keep our bulk spices in the freezer. We buy them from sources such as Penzey's, and try to buy a 6-12 month supply, although some things rarely get used. I make a lot of spice mixtures for different cuisines and BBQ, plus we wind up with things like 6 different varieties of salt. I made a quick list, and came up with about 80 different spices and mixtures, so it's not as crazy as it seems. Filling and labeling is going to be a project! I have surgery coming up, and will be restricted to 'light duty' for as long as two months, so this is one of many projects I've lined up for that time. I have a P-Touch labeler which is fantastic, but the labels get expensive. I want to label the jar, the lid, and a board under the jar so we know where to put them back. I might line the bottom of the drawer with 2" wood squares which I can label, but still re-arrange should the need arise.

I will probably be doing a mix of the expandable bamboo trays and the expandable dividers. The tray for knives, forks, spoons, and the expandable dividers for large utensils. I love the expandable dividers for shallow drawers.

They aren't "nice" but I got the OXO acrylic ones (also at BB&B with the coupons). The bamboo and wood ones were too shallow for me or came in the wrong sizes and shapes. The OXO ones are independent trays which can be attached and locked together with little hooks (the kind that would break if you rearranged them too much--the one negative). The different sizes all fit together with each other, and they are made to stack nicely. I have two large ones in my knife drawer stacked and it works really well with the most used ones on top and others below. The lower ones are easy to get out and the top one fits back in without any fuss. (I have edge guards on my knives so lay them flat.) There are little feet in the corners to keep them in place.

These things aren't at all elegant, but really beautifully designed.

I agree that I'll lose some space by inserting an actual tray. I'll make a litte trip to BB&B and see what they have. Thanks to all of you for your advice!
