Analyzing what makes a small house seem spacious

Looking at buddyrose's pictures made me think about the tiny house blog that emagineer posted one time. tiny house (I need to bookmark the blog instead of the thread or I'm going to lose it one day.)

I've always known it was all about simplifying and decluttering, but it is so obvious when you look at buddyrose's before and after pictures and the tiny house too.

There is nothing wrong with buddyrose's before pictures. They're terribly cute, but all the patterns and ruffles take up as much visual space as too much furniture in a room. Take the dining room for example. The dark curtains and table cloths overpower the room. Even the color around the two smaller windows draw attention to them, making the room busy. Where reversing the colors with the light color on the walls and white trim and shutters, puts the attention on only one place - the table.

I've never been a fan of slip covers, even though every decorating magazine seems to love them. They always seem wrinkled and sloppy. Buddyrose's pictures show how clean lines and simple accessories expand a room.

I too enjoyed buddyrose's transformation; it was very well done. What I admire about BR's remodel is that he didn't make extensive changes, most of it was just design style. It really shows how even modest changes can make an enormous difference.

One of the biggest differences one can make in a typical small house is light. Chopped up rooms, small windows, wallpaper or paneling - all of these can contribute to a closed-in feeling.

When I first walked into the home we now live in, my first words were, "This is THE ugliest house I have ever seen!" Really, it was terrible - architecturally undistinguished, a cottage without charm; plus the two nice old ladies who owned it had absolutely some of the worst design taste in the world.

Unlike BR we did considerable structural changes to the inside, creating the modern open plan in the LR/DR/kitchen area, then vaulting the ceiling on the main floor and putting in huge picture windows. The house remains the same footprint, but it feels so much nicer because it gets lots of daylight and the vaulted ceiling creates changes of light and shadow as the sun moves. Height, in this case, substituted for a length/width addition to still create a sense of spaciousness.

These two photos show what I mean. We vaulted the ceiling because the roof had to be redone anyway, so it was only a minor increase in costs and labor to insulate, drywall & spray-paint the vaulted part over the open plan. The remainder was left as attic storage space, although it too was insulated and drywalled.

Both photos are standing in the same place, inside the front door and looking straight out (east-facing) the back of the house. What it used to look like was this:

As we were refinishing the HW floors we found underneath the filthy dark brown shag W2W carpet, I took this shot as a comparison:

Same house, same size, same rooms; but you would never know it was the same house otherwise!

Wow, what a difference! Are you standing at the front door?

I agree that light makes a huge difference. I would have liked to knock all the walls out of ours. Our living room and kitchen is arranged just wrong and it would have looked like a one-room house.

Our footers will be dug this week but they have roped off all of the rooms and I have gone out there everyday for 2 weeks measuring it over and over again. We are building 1764 sq feet on the main floor with a bonus room over the garage that we will finish later. Not a mansion by any means, but perfect for our first home. I cried the first time I went out there, and finding this thread has given me SO much relief. I pray it continues to take shape and make more sense, because right now it looks like I could jump from one end of the house to the other. Crazy that this thread from almost 15 years ago is providing hope for me. I was only 10 years old when the first post would have been made! Thanks to all.

Mine is 12 x 15. I think it also depends on the scale and placement of other rooms, especially closets and bathroom. This is a 1952 colonial so the closets are single door (but go double width inside) and the 2 of them are in the side wall that butts the only upstairs very small bathroom (wall hung sink, toilet on one wall, shower/tub on opposite wall.) I have 2 other bedrooms oddly shaped with a single closet in each. My point is that I don't have a master bathroom or a walk-in closet. In my bedroom, I have a queen bed set between the 2 south windows, on the west wall with one window in the center is an amoire (shelves for tshirts/winter sweaters) and an old travel trunk for storage but mainly to sit on to dress and a taller old chest of drawers which has great deep drawers and on top has a small tv for the morning news & weather report - important here in the NE. The wall opposite the bed has my very old triple dresser. I am usually upstairs reading in bed by 8 pm as I arise at 4 am for work. I like having the 3 windows for breezes and to look out into my long yard and the weather. Decades ago while in Kansas there was an old 3 story house that actually had a ballroom on the 3rd floor! The attic was above that. It was a simple looking house from the outside but oh the inside was a delight! I will never forget how the master bedroom literally went from the front to the back (bed area in the back half), three sides of windows with shear curtains flittering in the breeze, and a simple sitting area. The closets and bath were off to the side very unobtrusive. The door to the room was in the center of the wall from the hallway. Perhaps it was the subtle decorating, furniture scale, and feeling of elegance yet comfy that appealed to me in this very old house (1920's ?) If I ever won the lottery and could build my own 'perfect' house, I still think I would like my bedroom like this old one.......and I am single! Go figure!

Shades_of_Idaho Thank you so much! Yes, I decided to use blues throughout. :) I really like the flow of it. So I really appreciate hearing that! My brother in law is the one who was doing it but we have decided to go in a different direction. Not because of brother in law's work though (it's beautiful). I just changed the color scheme and the brown tile is no longer working. I'm not sure exactly what the counter top is exactly called. But he busted up tiles and placed them in molder then sealed them. Very inexpensive! Wow! That is amazing! So beautiful!

OMG, I love the way those bushes on the side of the house look! Don't know why I haven't considered that - but that is exactly why this forum exists! Now I will try to find some plants a) grow big, fast, b) are not a primary deer diet staple. In regards to a trim - I am really lost with that, because I feel like those side windows need SOMETHING, but I can't come across too many photos of examples. I have seen some horizontal trim in Europe but didn't take any photos - it was a trim that went around the window but extended about a foot below the window with a "dead space" cutout so the siding was showing through. Say, like if the window is square, but you frame it with a vertical rectangle. Hard to explain. I'm afraid to experiment with it and make this simple "little box" house look like too much was done to it.
